Tutorial Details
- Requirements: After Effects CS5... go buy it!
A HUGE welcome to After Effects CS5! In this tutorial, I’ll be going through and explaining the new “Roto Brush” tool included within CS5. It isn’t a “keyer”, it’s not quite a “magic wand”, I wouldn’t even call it a “pen”. You’re just gonna have to watch the tutorial to find out what this amazing new feature is made of!

First!!!
Ok but seriously, been waiting for this a long time now
Great explanation of this new tool! I`ve seen the tool on cs5.org and was like “what the f* is going on?”
Also liked your sense of humor.
Great job!
CS5 has some really great features indeed!
- A bit offtopic, but what happend to the sherlock holmes credits tutorial?
I was wondering the same thing.
Sherlock tutorial is back now :)
I spend an hour searching for it too earlier, as im starting a 48 hour project tomorrow, where we will be using a similar effect, so its handy to have around ;)
@ Adam; Great presentation of the brush. I really like how your videos are made. Many “tutors” could learn alot from you. Hope to see more tutorials from you soonish.
It’s amazing. I like this.
This looks really good. well worth the update. I look forward to using it.
Nice
nice work
Nice one Adam! Both entertaining AND informative!
How did you get your hands on AE CS5 so early?
We’ll never know..
He was probably selected to try it out, or some people that pre-order it can get it early.
Either way.. That’s one awesome dog you’ve got, Miller.
I know what it actually is, but I still can’t shake the thought that the icon looks like a little man with a chainsaw.
Only a day late, would of been good putting this out on the actual launch date – like every other site.
The problem of CS5 is that the new GPU features are supported only by nVidia graphics cards… I wonder how much nVidia payed for this..
Thanks !!! not only was the tutorial amazing, but dude, you are awesome to listen to :) got any others?

I would like a preview… =(
Great Tutorial. Thanks for a heads up, this is like fire from the RotoGods…
Really Great! Thanks
I can only assume that it is still possible to back in and fine tune your roto with the old fashioned pen tool after. I cant wait to try this out!
Great Tutorial. Btw, the t-shirt you´re wearing in this video is quite weird, where can i buy it? ;)
it’s a “cursor”….
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! that is pretty rad man. Where did you get it?
That’s really amazing.
Finlay Adobe Finlay!,,,man u r awesome, keep it oNN
In contrast to some comments, I found the video slightly annoying. No offense, but you might want to tone down the pseudo Kramer humor used throughout the tutorial. Not funny, and mostly just made me want to leave and read an article about it.
This is one of my fave tutorials of your’s dude, absolutely awesome.
Nice overview, but in the future don’t make weak jokes during your tutorials. They are really unfunny and fall completely flat. You may have an advanced copy of After Effects CS5 but you still haven’t upgraded your sense of humor from CS2. -*Bong!*- Try listening to Andrew Kramer’s jokes, you could learn something! Thanks anyways for the in depth look.
Says the guy covering himself under the alias “bong”.
Oh well.
Cant wait to get my hands on the CS5 Version of AE and PS
splendid!nice work keep it up
Hey really nice tut, Adam. Seriously did a double take when you did the mask trick at the beginning. :)
Love CS5!!!!!
God I hope the content creators on this site are well compensated for having to listen to the drivel and whining in the comments every single time a new video goes up. You people make me sick.
Great run through, I was wondering how the roto-brush worked, and this answered that questions and was entertaining! Don’t let these spoiled brats get you down.
Hey Adam… just thought I’d comment and say great job on the tutorial! I can’t help but feel so many of the people that always have to post negative comments to tear people down are just putting down others because of their own insecurities.
So to all those who can’t help but always talk about how “bad” or “stupid” or “not funny” someone’s tutorial is, I urge you to come up with your own so we can all just see just how “amazing” you are in comparison. Try critiquing a tutorial, not just being a jerk for once.
Be thankful Envato brings us more free content than we know what to do with.
the guy doing this tut has an aweful sense of humour, so NOT funny.
awesome
love cs5
cool looking tool, cant wait to try it out. Have to agree with the not funny comments above though. sorry but it’s true, get to the point. I’m sure your dog is awesome but seriously…nobody cares. I have seen dogs before. Get a posterous account for your personal stuff, man.
This tool will at least significantly drop the extortion like prices being charged for those ugly 2D to 3D movie conversions being done out there.
Crash of the Titans anyone? :http://realvision.ae/blog/2010/04/after-effects-cs5s-rotobrush-and-nuke-ocula-tools-assist-in-2d-to-3d-conversions/
I like your tutorials better than Andrew Kramer tuts.
i totally agree with Ben realy an interactive Roto tutorial.
awesome tut! thanks!
the man waste your time to recording a excelent video tutorial. He can speak everything he wants! Even with the dog.
Wow! Thank you!
This tutorial made me excited to Roto Brush my own work!
