So, what are the 12 Basic Principles of Animation and why should you care about them? The goal of the principles is to bring life and excitement to any animation – to take the mediocre and make it exceptional. Originally created by Disney animators for hand drawn animation, these are principles that anyone hoping to create quality animations should know and use.

noooooooooo , it must be free , its the basic principle all peopl should hav acces to basic information
Agreed! Should be free! It’s not like an advanced flashy stuff for pros.
Totally agree.
you’re soo right!
The tuts+ has never said its for advanced users, just in depth tutorials.
Beginners might sign up in order to learn from these awesome in depth tutorials.
Agreed its does look awesome, reminds me to renew my plus which ran out this week…….
I totally agree!!! most be freee!!
tuts nice
PEASE FOR FREE! MUST HAVE IT!
Commom guys, this type of stuff needs to be a free!!
AE Premium its just for PRO, this tutorial is for Amateurs, this things need to be watch for everyone!
What the…I AM a premium member, I’m logged in, and I’m STILL just getting a preview. Not cool.
Oh, never mind. It’s because I don’t have after effects. My bad.
LOL. Why are you a premium member (or whatever you call it) if you don’t have AE? xD The name of the site is AE tuts…
or is it for photoshop tuts too? I want those tutorials, and these and some others, but I don’t want to spend money on all of them…
I just bought my first plus for this tutorial, and I can’t find it anywhere? What’s wrong?
you need to log into http://www.tutsplus.com and then under AE you can get the tut.
This .html file with 3 2-minutes films are the tutorials? Are you kidding me? Why, as far as the rest are concerned, there are just simple definitions of these subjects with no tutorial?
Disney’s previous information so why charge for it. Should be FREEEE
I AM a premium member too, I’m logged in, and I’m STILL just getting a preview. WHY???.
Hey Giovanni, you are probably just downloading the ‘Source Files’ – you need to click the ‘Bonus Tutorials’ tab and get the full video from there.
Ironically, the Staging in this video SUCKS ^_^
Sorry, but charging to teach people what Frank and Ollie preach for free is pretty damn stupid :/
this is a plus+ tut? really?? hmmmm. i think not. great information, basic animation theory and application which anyone calling themselves an animator by any definition should know. but nowhere near the complexity of a tutorial that calls for any level of monetary expenditure on anybody’s part (especially in a recession). hahaha. you better pull out the big guns if anyone is going to spend money. integrate this into something on a larger scale, and i’m quite sure, you will get less complaints, and more $$$$. keep up the good work!
and if anyone wants the original plus tutorial on animation basics, go to your nearest neighborhood library.

Peace.
Yea AK doesn’t charge for his tutorials but you want me to pay for this?
Is thir tutorial for pros? don´t think so….
I have to laugh at the posts in this comment thread. Those without Plus are whining that it should be free while those with Plus are whining that it is too basic to be for the paid members. I’ve yet to see any tutorials over the past 6 months that are decent enough to actually pay for them. Plus members are being ripped off royally. Now, if you like Photoshop or have audio interests a Plus membership is probably worth it….but if your interests are mainly AE….you are getting mugged each month.
Maybe its worth it, but in hindsight: nobody is going to pay money for something “basic” guys… Not a very good idea.
Should Be FREE.
First it’s the tutorial materials…
Now the tutorials themselves…
Why not have a 30 second ad placed throughout the tut to pay for the site?
Arrrgh!
Well… Thx Mister Andrew Kramer, your website is incredible !…
I paid my suscription because of just this single tutorial. And is worth every penny. I’m a lawyer and this saves me time of digging on the topics to learn over books and other stuff. Once I logged in, I have access to tons of others tutorials. So I really felt this was a good purchase. Though I paid only for this, but I got more at the end.
Basic knowledge = free. Its my attitude, so I think I might never sign up for premium now. WELL DONE TUTS+
Why? Why does the level of difficulty matter in the slightest when it comes to charging money for it? (Pro-tip: it doesn’t, and you are wrong) If you don’t know the information, then it is worth SOMETHING. There’s a reason the ‘For Dummies” series of books blew up as successfully as they did, and it sure as hell wasn’t because they gave away basic information for free.
I’m a premium user. How do I download the video exactly?
Just log in and under “Bonus Tutorials” you’ll see a place to download the article, the videos are included in the download.
u’ve mentioned this “Bonus Tutorials” tab….i cant seem to locate it. a lil help plz.
to all the people that are whining that it should be free, just watch ‘premium tut preview’. it goes over most of the principles of animation right there in the preview. if you can’t figure out how to apply those simple moves to your animation…well, you shouldn’t have any trouble doing that should you?
Seriously Confused. Where do I view the tut? I’ve joined, followed the instructions in this thread and still don’t see the tutorial. All I have been able to do is download .rar files, & can’t do anything with those files.
Specifically, where can I directly get tutorial after logging in?
Thanks!
Forget my last post. I think I’m not using the media player correctly. I keep pulling up a previously downloaded flv instead of this one. Hopefully I’ll figure this out soon.
Thanks!
this is not fair
it should free
I am a premium member. I can’t even access this or the second installment. Not very impressed.
OMG Why isn’t this tutorial for free? Why doesn’t Adobe give me a copy of After Effects?!?! Why does it cost money to go to college!?!??! I want a magical career in this industry handed to me on a silver platter!
This community is filled with the absolute most whiny, self-entitled people I have ever seen. I sincerely hope none of you make it in any sort of effects field. I would hate to have peers like you.
Pay the $9 effing dollars and shut the hell up, please.
Bravo, friend. Its an epidemic of self-entitlement everywhere. Andrew Kramers tutorials are free and people STILL complain. Every youtube video out there, the very first comment is either someone hating or someone saying “oh, please do this for me” or “oh, please teach me to do this for free (so I can go out and charge other people to do it for them!!)”.
Its 9 dollars. A small price to pay, considering you can learn pretty much everything there is to know from internet tutorials these days with a little time, patience, and practice.
Again, bravo.
this it’s not a tutorial.. only 5 video of 12 basic animation.. You don’t explain how to do the other 7 animation in after effects..
I was really interested in revisiting these concepts in a more in depth way. Unfortunately, the Title was misnamed, it should be called “5 of the 12 basic principles of animation”. It is just bizarre that someone would rush through these tutorials in a way that led them to actually forget to explain 7 of the 12 basic priciples.
There is a part 2.
Is there a way to watch the video without downloading the .rar file- I don’t have a program to open a .rar file. Please advise.
Thanks

there are lots of free solutions:

I’m addressing the person who made the tutorials:
Sir, in the third video you talk about arcs, now you used a method involving shapes(copy pasting off it), try making an identical mask on the layer, going down to the text>path options and selecting the mask as the path. Much easier…
And I do agree, this should’ve been free… Then again, if you don’t know this stuff… you’d BETTER buy a premium membership.
Cheers and thanks for the tuts mate.
My bad, I just now saw it’s an image, yeah, lol. It’s pretty basic in any case, I mean I took VTC’s tutorials(back when I first started) and most of this stuff is so basic that showing these tips in your own tutorials seems like new money for old rope, especially with that whole “I’ll make it 1 dollar this week”
).
I liked the tip you did with the last one… That’s the only one I’d consider a tip.
Don’t mean to bash you but I really was expecting more with this. Some genuine innovative tips, I saw one tutorial here, the one with the Bruce Lee voice and loved how he showed ways to animate the elements, even if they were nothing new, the results were excellent. Anyway, try to do a few advanced ones perhaps…
Cheers.
