I remember a quick-tip: lower the antialiasing setting for the 3d stuff in Photoshop to make it easier to work with in AE. Remember to change it back to a better quality when doing the final rendering.

I have a question why is my after effects slow after i import 3d into after effects? It like freezes it didnt do this before

    • Dogs

Because it’s rendering 3D models every time you move it and it’s badly programmed.

Cute demo but absolutely useless in a production environment

Thanks for taking the time to make a tutorial but unfortunately this method shouldn’t even be shown seeing as tho it’s so processor intensive, it’s basically useless in a work environment. I have an 8 core system with 16GB of RAM and a 2GB video card and it can’t handle even the most basic of 3D models. Too bad Adobe spent time adding a near useless feature.

Fusion is best in this situation. You can import 3d models and scene with all the textures and materials in .FBX format. And this really doesn’t require much RAM. It works like butter with 1GB RAM. After Effects fails in this area.

Thanks. When i import 3d obj from photoshop to after effects i havent any textures from 3s model. plz help abaut this.

As far as I know, you can’t get textures in After Effects. But it works really well with Fusion. Make any model in 3ds Max/Maya/Blender etc, apply texture on that, export it in .FBX format and then simply import that .FBX file in Fusion. You will get here the model with textures in true 3d environment. But in After Effects, I think they don’t offer this facility now.

didn’t know that, gonna have to test it out. Thanks for that bit of info

when i have textures from obj files in photoshop there is not problem. but i cant get texture from obj file in photoshop. i input model an texture in same folder but i cant get texture in photoshop. i dont need to fusion my works soft is after effects

    • Bigmc

in a obj file, In my mind, the soft doesn’t save the map channel. He saves only the mod object.

When I import it I can select Composition-Retain Layer Sizes but there is no “Live Photoshop 3D” Selector. I have After Effects cs6.

  • jo

I am in the same boat. I have followed exactly how you have done it, but when I import the obj file in to after effects I dont get a tick box that says ‘Live photoshop 3D’. I too have cs6.

  • randell

    He,

is there somebody with the cs6 solution?

  • John H

I was just watching lynda.com’s “After Effects CS6 New Featureswith Chris Meyer” and he mentioned that this feature is not included anymore. They (adobe) made several changes to photoshop and AE that made this not compatible anymore. He didn’t give any suggestions that they are working to get this feature back.

I dont see any of the 3doptions at all in photoshop and CS5 nor CS6 can import any versions of .3ds nor .obj-files? Tried going to windows but there are no version there :(.
