An Introduction to Uses of Depth Propagation

This tutorial covers the essentials of using Depth Propagation: tuning the most important options, selective usage of roto masks, and source preparation. We’re Using The Foundry’s NUKE in this video, but the version for AE has the same functionality.

Depth Propagation Advantages:

  1. Less number of roto masks and for fewer frames
  2. Time and cost efficiency: manual work reduced significantly
  3. Depth map creation for background and foreground
  4. DP supports object depth change in a scene

Depth Propagation simplifies the process of conversion:

  1. Detailed depth maps only for key frames are needed (not for the whole sequence)
  2. Detailed depth map will be propagated for all other frames
  3. One mask per object is needed for foreground processing

    Unfortunately, not a very useful tutorial. The company is very restrictive in the usage of the plugin (check the FAQ):

    “Small companies are definitely not a target group as well at the moment. Typical deal sizes are tens of thousands USD at least.”

    “Trial versions are provided when we see a reasonable opportunity of signing a contract. In each case it is decided individually. Normally, as the first step of the evaluation, software is demonstrated using screen sharing, “

      Hello Carlos,

      at the moment YUVsoft is working only with corporate customers – medium-size and large production studios. It’s not because the company dislikes very small studios, self-employed artists and just stereo enthusiasts. The reason is in product specifics:
      1. Individual users can’t afford it due to license costs
      2. 2D to 3D suite consists of many professional tools for both NUKE and After Effects and is being offered as a package solution.

      YUVsoft is getting a lot of requests from end users. That’s why in the future it’s planned to extend the product portfolio and to offer small tools and parts of the flagship 2D to 3D suite in order to match the needs of everyone, interested in YUVsoft products.

      The trial versions of YUVsoft’s product suites are being provided with a dongle to protect from the pirate copying. As you understand, it’s not possible to send such trials to everyone.

    This isnt a Tutorial, rather just a run through of a few features in the stated program…

      This tutorial is dedicated only to one (depth propagation tool) of the many plug-ins of 2D to 3D suite. This video features just some of the capabilities of the a.m. tool. That’s why I agree with your comment.There is a series of such short tutorials, you can find – if interested – on company’s web site.
