Final Product What You'll Be Creating
In this tutorial, we’ll be creating a regeneration effect, inspired by the Doctor Who TV show. I say inspired by, because it’s not screen-accurate, but we’ll be using AE’s built-in tools, alongside some stock footage, VCP’s Optical Flares and Trapcode Particular to pull off a pretty convincing regeneration.

can i suggest combining this with trapcode shine, it creates a much more screen accurate result!
(and possibly tone down the flares)

Riftmaster: I wasn’t initially going for a screen-accurate effect, but rather get inspired by the show and do my own thing :)
ah, ok. I am not putting the effect down or anything (because i think it looks awesome)!

This seriously just made my day.
Instead of wasting so much time on key frames to position the flares and particles, i suggest you use the built in Tracker Controls, it would have saved you a lot of time. Very easy to use. Very cool particles by the way. It was a great tutorial, thanks
Thanks for the tip. However, experience tells me that AE’s built in tracker seldom gets it right, which is why I opted out from using it.
I have also had a few issues with the built in tracker, but after some practice it gets the job done. You just have to pick the right spots to track. I strongly recommend The Foundry’s Cameratracker. It is the most awesome plug-in i’ve ever encountered, it saves you the trouble with that crappy manual tracking and does the job for you. You should check it out!
thanks again!
Nice beard ! Nice tut ! I wiil try this with my friend beard :D
Many thanks for this tutorial. My kids are huge Dr Who fans. I can’t wait to get to work using this with them
Glad to be of help, man!
Artig å se noen nordmenn her! Men du burde uten tvil laget tre null-objects med tracking data… :)
Mr Ellingsen has outdone himself yet again. You sir should get an AEUTUTSPLUS Super Gold badge on your profile page :p
Thanks for sharing and yeah, nice beard :D.
LOVE THIS TUTORIAL!!
It’s my favorite one!!!
Hi, great tut.. I just wanted to add a suggestion that I think everyone could benefit from if I may.
As people have mentioned, the tracker isn’t the best route to take in this particular comp. So keyframing would have been my choice as well… However, there is still a way to use only one set of keyframes.
You could keyframe three lights (renamed to Emitter) then both Optical Flares and Particular could use the information for each instance. :)
Still, great use of particular and the custom flare creation makes this a nice tutorial
More please :)
