Final Product What You'll Be Creating

This is the first of a two part tutorial on how to create a sonic scream similar to Banshee’s scream in ‘X-Men: First Class’ or the sonic cannons in ‘The Incredible Hulk.’ I used this effect for my short film ‘Agents Of Evil 2: Supercharged’ which you can see here. First I’ll show how to do the effect from the side, then in the next tutorial I’ll show how to do it from the front.

In this tutorial I’ll be going through the process of creating the displacement map for the warping (using the CC Glass effect), making the displacement look like it has some volume, and adding camera shake. In the final comp I do some camera projection.

In the effect I use the Smoke Wisp 8 from the smoke stock footage pack from Aetuts+ (which you can download here if you like their Facebook page). I also use the Knoll Unmult plug-in that you can download for free from Red Giant Software.

Hope you find this tutorial useful!

I think videos like this one are the main problem of (ae. | psd. | cg. | … )tutsplus.com. Other websites have specialized on certain topics and offer high quality material, either for money (digitaltutors.com) or for free (videocopilot.net). tutsplus.com wants to compete with those, but totally fails to create a good working concept. Tutorials are released on a very irregular basis. Sometimes they’re really bad, but free, sometimes they’re really awesome and for free, sometimes they’re really awesome and Premium, and sometimes (and this happens way more often than it should) they’re terrible and Premium.

I mean seriously … look at this tutorial. Despite of the techniques used to create that effect and despite the knowledge one might gain – it’s a 2 second clip that looks worse than anything I have ever seen before, and then you’re supposed to pay $20 a month to get tutorials like that.

It is really not my intention to fuss or just talk bad about this website or anything, but those kind of videos and workshops are exactly the reason why I cancelled my Premium-Membership and switched to other websites as my main resources.

When I find a nice, free tutorial on here, fine, if I don’t, I just go somewhere else.
