You may have to get up and stretch out a little before starting this tutorial. It’s got some pretty ground breaking techniques and covers quite a lot leaving very little up in the air. In honor of this being a leap year and all, here you go… jump in.
Similar to Andrew Kramer’s tutorial, this one shows how to use a Difference Matte to roto out an actor and then composite various HD elements in front AND behind an actor to make the ground smashing effect seen in movies such as Hancock and games such as Crackdown.

Favorite line from the tut: “I don’t know what I’m doing…” That’s overstating the obvious.

Old videocopilot? With Action Essentials? I don’t think so.

Excellent tutorial, but am I missing something ??? this is the third time I have seen someone referring to this year as being a leap year. The last leap year was 2008, the next will be 2012. I didn’t see a 29th this past February.
Just wondering, sorry for being of topic.

Hey man, that’s really cool, is there a way to add a shadow on the ground from the flying debris?
Could you do a tut on the basketball scene from Hancock? The one when he is shooting from the other side of the court.

Really freakin awesome! Probably the coolest non videocopilot tutorial I’ve seen. Nice tutorial
i haven’t downloaded the tut but preview is awesome. 400 Mb is bit on the higher side though.
what did you hit or click at 8:39? when i hit page up the background around the mask turns black..help me please…
did by any chance figure out the mask issue? havent got a response was wondering if yooou might have found a solution…?
MAN!!
Thank you very mush for this awosome tutorial.
I used the Freeze Frame function for the blanc scene, found it easier
Regards
You’re right, it absolutely is easier to use the Freeze Frame Function. However, that makes the scene static, which is something the human brain and eyes can easily pick up on because it deals with motion. I use clips because even though its incredibly subtle, you subconsciously notice that the leaves on the trees are moving. In most cases in videos as short as this it’s not a big deal, but when thats all the effort it takes to make a non-static scene, i just go ahead and do it.
i having the same issue as aero i am getting a black mask around my video your insight will be much appraciated:]
good hangkong tutor, thank u.
that’s what i’m talking about , Awesome
Nice effect! The tutorial wasn’t the best, but not bad for your very first. For compositing the various pieces of footage instead of using a Fast Blur I would’ve used the mosaic effect to pixelate the elements. It’s what I do when doing VFX and the results are pretty good.
Great tutorial Wren. BTW, which preset from Film Magic Pro did you use for the color correction?
I can’t move my selected area up! When i drag it up only the yellow marking get’s up. Not the person!
please help!!
not seen it yet, the download size is really large, is there any way i can get a dvd mailed to me . thanks.
it’s really hard i need help
This should have been a tutorial on color correcting. Minus all that time spent other than on the actual subject of the jump and landing. IT WAS AN AWESOME TUTORIAL ! ! !
I can’t wait to get the software. Going to order it tonight just to try your methods. Will com back and comment after I screw it up a few times. THANKS.
FlyerTaz
wow.. coooool

hey, what an awesome tutorial…………. it amazing……..
thanks……….
I noticed that there is a strong shock when you jump and land to the ground. How to make this effect?
i have a question, why every time i cut the person out with the pen tool it moves it to the front,it removes it from were it originally is and just moves it to the front .?
