Lighting effects MUST use “Add” blending mode. You can’t have a light emitting object (flame, candle, spark, lightstreak, thunder) DARKER than the background (look at the red glow)…

I actually tried Add originally when doing the effect and it burned the final color even darker, and more blown out. “Add” mode is not a wholly required mode vs “Screen”. It all is dependent on personal taste. It’s often been my experience in working with the two that “Add” mode blows out the color and lighting far more than “Screen” does.

That’s because you aren’t work in a proper linear color space or using Blend using 1.0 gamma. Try one of those, and you will find Add will act just as you want it to.

Sorry dude but you could have done that tutorial a lot smoother, many steps are not really required to achieve that effect. It looks kinda mediocre, but hey, it was a great idea for a tutorial and I’m sure you could have done it a lot better if you had spent more time on it

The whole concept and idea of the Tuts+ Network is a great one. It allows people to share creative ideas and techniques for in this case After Effects. I’ve learned a lot here. But to maintain good quality, I think AETuts+ should not publish tutorials like this. I really don’t like the visual effect at all and you could have done a way better job. Also, the techniques are quite amateuristic (you could have used a green screen or whatever) and I don’t think the preview looks attractive. You really should not take this personal but I think you should do something else than making tutorials. I wish you the best.

I did use a greenscreen. Also, this is the first tutorial I’ve ever done, so, it’s a fair bit rough around the edges, sure, but how else do we improve? By stopping when we don’t quite get it right? Sorry, but I don’t buy into that mentality.

        Hey,

The end effect was perhaps not that intresting, but some of the tecnics used are good to know. (and thats what tutorial are for!) I think peopel look to much on the end result in this tutorial and do not remeber that it´s the problem solving and diffrent tecnics that are the stuff to leran.
Thubs up Keith and i´m seeng forwars for your next tut!

Guys, you shouldn’t be too rough on Keith. Maybe this tutorial is not quite good for advanced people but it certainly gives something to the beginners. He is a new member here in the community of the authors. I wish Keith to come with more exciting tutorials in future.Welcome Keith.

I used several tutorials on this site to make this video of my holiday in Manicore, a small town in Amazon, Brazil.
    Hope you like it.
