Final Product What You'll Be Creating

This is a tutorial on how to create a teleport effect similar to the Fallen’s teleport effect in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. We start with tracking the footage, adding glow to the actor, and using fractal noise to create a ‘lattice lightning’ effect. I used this shot in my short film, ‘Agents Of Evil: Supercharged‘.

Very good tutorial, well explain and the result looks great!
I’m wondering if you didn’t have the possibility to increase the size of the movie, because of the movements of the camera that shows different edges (the bottom, the top, a part of the left one.
You stabilize the footage, and then are free to dupplicate it, and with the freeze option, select the moment where the image is shown and then become easely able to do the camera shake.
    I don’t know if i’m very clear ;-)

I really like the initial design of the effect, but I feel like it could have more :D

    Great Tutorail !
Perhaps a second part from “Agents Of Evil Film” the VFX at 0:29 sec and 0:46 sec. is cool – are this a Greenscreenshots to move the person?

    Hello,
So I’m following your tutorial, but as I am a beginner-intermediate with AE, I cannot seem to figure out for to render my rotobrushed character so I can create a matte. Every time I render, I have a black background when I import the saved matte into the comp. Changing the blend mode to ADD gets rid of the Black, but when I try to alpha matte the black solid with the fractal noise effect to my teleport matte, it simply applies the effect to the entire window, as opposed to only the white character. Help?

I retract my previous message, though I couldn’t figure out how to render it as a matte, I duplication the rotobrushed footage, removed the effects from one of the layers, and used the other with the effects still present as a matte. Works great. Thanks for everything.

You could try to luma matte instead of alpha matte.
      To make an alpha matte:

-Add the layer to the render queue
      -Set the format to Quicktime
-In Format Options, set the codec to PNG
-Under Video Options, set the Channels option to alpha

That should render the layer as an alpha matte.

      Glad you enjoyed the tutorial!

really nice work. Like part with tracked shake very much. Always think that usin natural references is the best way to go.

  • Timo

I rotoscope it but when I render its look so bad!!!!!! please help, I retry alot already!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Javed

    I give up.

I’ve been trying this for 8 hours straight and I can’t do it.

I render the matte I created, but when I import it, it’s not transparent.

Complete waste of my day :(

You need to have the settings set to: Quicktime-PNG-Alpha only. Hope this helps.

how did you manage to key yourself (screen matte) out so clearly? May i have problems keying myself out because of the poor quality of my video footage?

Maybe. It took a lot of fine tuning with the Rotobrush tool to get it right.
