Final Product What You'll Be Creating

In this tutorial we will have a look at offsetting a video in time through a grid. To achieve this we will use an expression controlled by a slider. I used this technique on the music video “Big Pink – Hit the ground” Directed by Tim Brown, Post-Production by Mainframe. Hope you enjoy it.

    This is an awesome tutorial! Love that she goes over how the expression is working and what she is doing and then how she provides different examples of shape masks you can use. Great work! Even for it being your first this was great.

    After watching this tutorial I thought there should be a way to cut the clip into slices without using Illustrator. And yes, there it is: http://www.redefinery.com/ae/view.php?item=rd_Slicer

    It’s a free and easy-to-use script which allows You to determine how many slices should appear and automatically connect them to a Null Object. I must say it’s very handy, because You don’t have to delete any masks anymore. :)

      Cool thanks for the link. When I did it for the other music video, some of the test were kind of “extreme” like in that music video, but the director wanted it more subtle.

  • chris

    WOW, the preview looks cool!!! Like the effect!

  • jay

    could you please write the expression for us here

    • http://nidiadias.com Nidia Dias
      Author

      The expression used is:

      n_frames = thisComp.layer(“SLIDER”).effect(“frames”)(“Slider”)/25;
      timeRemap = thisComp.layer(index).timeRemap + n_frames;

      but where it says SLIDER and frames its the name of your adjustment layer and the name you gave to the effect.

    Awesome tut. Hmm. What if i have moving camera. Will projection technics help?

    • http://nidiadias.com Nidia Dias
      Author

      You can still use moving camera, if you check on my vimeo the test for the music video, you will see some camera movements, the thing is that the background was plain, this way when the camera moves it will only affect the subject.. but again it all depends on what you want to achieve, you can get nice results with moving cameraa =)

    This is a sublime tutorial. Good job!

    Muito Bom!!!

  • http://aftereffectstutorials.blog.com EdEditz

    This is a really roundabout way to go about it. This can be done much simpler with the use of two free scripts, no need for expressions. Just check my After Effects Tutorials blog for the ‘Slit Scan’ tutorial.
    http://aftereffectstutorials.blog.com/2011/07/15/slit-scan-effect/
    In it I explain two methods and the second of those can reproduce the effect from this tutorial easier than is explained here.

    Wow, this video really helped me a lot. Thanks so much.
    I was able to alter some of the instructions in order to create a production that is similar and different at the same time

  • liox008

    I’ve got a problem, when I’m reading “-1″ in “(index-1)” AE say me it’s an error… Is it because I’m on CS5?

    • http://nidiadias.com Nidia
      Author

      Be sure to have a file on top of the one you have -1. If its the first layer on the top it can’t have -1.

      Hope it solves the problem.
      Cheers

    Soooooo beyond confused. I didnt understand half of what was said. :( I really want to achieve this effect.
