Final Product What You'll Be Creating

Today’s tutorial will show you how to create a zombie headshot. We’ll start by first rotoscoping out the head using his makeup line as a guide. From there we’ll add some stock footage of a decapitated head to create the illusion of a hollow skull. Lastly, we’ll use blood stock footage to mask the transition to the headless result.

Wow this is a great one, thanks aloooooooooooooot!

Very nice work! Thank you! btw for the mask, you can simply put the masks mode on “none” so you can see what’s going on and then change it to “substract” once you’re done :)

Thanks again, i’ll try this right now!

Before I mask out the head I duplicate the layer and slide it to the end of the clip where there is a clean shot of the trees.

Great job with the hollow skull!

But as far as the other things go, I was a little perplexed by how you chose to do things.

First of all, why not use Mocha to your advantage in order to track things?
I’m sure you have it with your version of After Effects.

And why not put some extra effort into how you composite the blood, rather than just splotching it on with multiply?

Last, but certainly not the least:
CC Force Motion Blur doesn’t work the way you seem to think it does.

It’ll generate motion blur for the things for which it can render in-between frames for, such as other effects.
Video clips and stock footage, however, don’t have in-between frames.
All it’ll do in that case is give you frame blending.

The motion blur feature of the Timewarp effect will generate in-between keyframes for video clips using pixel motion.
So that’s what you should go for when dealing with video clips.

Faking it with various blur effects is the best choice for things that move quickly, such as blood spurts – as Timewarp does not function well unless things remain consistent between frames.

Hey, I really do love your tutorial! I’m trying to rebuild it myself but I can’t find a nice picture of the stump which fits my scene. Where did you get yours?

    Greetings from Germany

  • Tim

Great job! I’m working on a similar shot but cannot seem to find a good picture of a stump. Thanks again for the awesome tutorial!

  • Alex

Man, you know what is tracking?
