This 2 Part Tutorial aims to show various techniques used to create an imaginary hi-tech divers mask, as seen from the divers viewpoint.
In Day 1, I will show how to create the graphical elements that form the basis of all the in-visor display systems. These will be done in Adobe Illustrator, but the same techniques can be used in After Effects.
Then I’ll show how I created the glass warping effects used to simulate a 3d glass wraparound visor, and also put some water droplets onto the outside of the glass.

underwater part looks a bit odd
Simon: look at the final result. It look just like if we had a mini processor or some electronic stuff with night vision on our mask !

AdrienF: I never said the whole effect was bad. I only criticised the underwater part. Everything except the underwater part looks promising, in my opinion
Weird effect for the water, you can’t really see what’s swimming around. I like the HUD effect for the goggles though. Quite cool.
I really couldn’t understand the purpose of this tut especially the preview file.

it doesn’t even look like an inside of a mask… just looks ghetto.. yeah.. pretty bad.
Looks pretty bad. I’m looking at the final result but I can’t help but wonder why in the heck the water is that shade of blue or why the bubbles look so odd.
Yeah wow it started out looking promising until he dunked his head under water… i liked the water distortions… but then we dive into that blue liquid used in this commercials for feminine hygiene products and… this needs to be a 2 part tutorial?
Am I mistaken or is this tutorial one of thousands on the net… I think I’ve seen something similar even here on ae.tuts, and having great one on videocopilot, I can’t really see the point of having this one here.
ugly. ae-tuts gets ridiculous by posting tutorials like this one. what about quality control? the other tuts+ sites are really cool and helpful, but ae-tuts gradually ruins the standing of the tuts+ network. that’s too bad!

I’m a scuba diver and have seen a military style HUD mask (which are sweeeet), the display could use more “stats”, like air level, depth, temp etc. for a more realistic look. Some of the water distortions are cool, I think the preview file should be longer….it’s so quick you can’t really see the effect well. Less bubbles would be better, this guy seems to be hyper-ventilating :) But all in all not a bad start for trying a complex effect.

Constructive criticism is good, and it’ll help me improve future tutorials and I guess this being the first time i ever made a tutorial, i was a little lacking in explaining the reason for the underwater section looking the way it does. Or why the project has so many diverse aspects.
This was one of those jobs where the client wanted to use shots from the forthcoming ad campaign but did not want to give anything away (these teasers ran for a fortnight before the actual product launch). There was no budget or time to shoot new material, so it was decided to create an effect that gave the impression of looking through a light enhancement device to disguise the actual products in the shot… this was used on three different teasers, and by adjusting the colours used, gave each teaser a different look whilst maintaining the overall design. If you were to change the blue colours to green, you get a pretty convincing night vision effect. Then re-using the graphical elements in different layouts, gives new viewer effects.
Its in 2 parts because wanted to show how i achieved the final look, and to do that necessitated showing all the various techniques i used and that takes time.
John – i agree – the shot could use more stats but as time was the main factor on this project, coupled to the fact we are not selling a real divers mask, i held back on those elements. As for the bubbles, i’m not a diver so don’t know how realistic my interpretation was, and trying to fit a regular breathing cycle into 4 seconds is kinda pointless. I just tried to show how i would have approached the problem if i had more time for the shot to develop.
