Create A Simulated 3d Sky Scene With A Flying Plane

Create A Simulated 3d Sky Scene With A Flying Plane

Tutorial Details
  • Requirements: After Effects, a plane model, 3ds Max (or other 3d software), and VCP's Optical Flares
  • Difficulty: Intermediate
  • Run Time: 19:18 min

Final Product What You'll Be Creating

In this tutorial we’ll start with just a picture. We’ll be changing this into a natural looking sky video by using the corner pin effect. Then we’ll go into 3D’s Max and get a render of a plane. After this, we’re going to composite those elements together and add some cinematic effects. In the end we’ve created a nice shot simply made out of one picture, a model, and some smart techniques. Enjoy!

Thanks, I try to follow this tut…

  • Abojung

Watching the preview, i thought that maybe only after effects was used, but it seems you used 3ds max. A piece of advice, if you are using a 3d software, then atleast use it to show more potential in it. For whatever reason this tutorials is here, this tut is total crap. There are none of the passes here required for a compositing. Even if people here say that this is just a beginner tut(no idea why this is on intermediate), this is TOTALLY wrong. Just using Optical Flares wont make a a shot sellable, try to learn how to use more passes like diffuse, specular, reflection, refraction, etc. which is totally required in this situation.

Maybe this isn’t the normal way of using 3d software, but I just wanted to show that you can still create a shot without knowing a lot about 3d. There are people really struggling with 3d and this might be the intermediate stage before reaching that level. If pro’s are watching the video they might have criticism, but if people are making a film for a normal audience nobody will notice that the plane doesn’t have any passes. For those filmmakers this might be helpful. I still think that people can learn some techniques here and that they can see that you don’t always need to know everything before being creative. You can go to cg.tutsplus.com for high detailed cg stuff.

I agree with Sierk, it is great concentrating more on the final effect, rather than all the stages in between. I like to make effects in After Effects, not spend ages working and learning how to do the 3D modelling side. There are plenty of tutorials already on how to do render passes, which always over-complicate everything.

        Agree! And good job!!

Well Abojung…. If you know so much then why not post a tut….. Just dont critisize others work just because your knowledge is so much intense than the author(which I think is not true).. It may be an easy task for you but there are many in the world who would like to learn a lot from this video…. So if you do not have anything to learn here just don’t come here…
And finally the tutorial is not crap you are….

And good work Sierk keep it coming…

FYI both Pixar and ILM rely heavily on doing almost everything in the CG render and would use their compositing almost exactly how this guy did – not to tweak the 3D to death, but to add the 2D details. There is nothing wrong with this workflow, it is just generally believed to be a bit slower and it is certainly annoying if you have a director or compositing supervisor breathing down your neck trying to make changes.

so abojung, we are waiting for your tutorial about passes etc

  • Malte

Nice compositing, but a still airplane with it’s wheels out “flying” in the sky?? .. It looks really shaky as well.
I think this tutorial has potential, but the airplane part needs to be redone majorly.

    Nice tutorial. Thanks for sharing.
