In this tutorial Naim Alwan ventures outside of After Effects for a little bit of 3D Matchmoving to create this stunning Urban Jungle effect where vector graphics are perfectly tracked to some city footage. In day 1 you will learn how to do a track using Boujou (although any matchmoving software will work for this) and then import and apply that information in After Effects successfully.
Naim explains:
In this two part tutorial you will learn the workflow for seamlessly integrating live action footage with motion graphics elements.
The first day we are going to be spending a little time familiarizing ourselves with the camera tracking process using Boujou, and the settings we need to get right in order to export an AE camera track.
We will then use the information contained on the nulls to setup the scene. Once the track is imported in AE and scene setup we will shift our focus to Illustrator where we will cover the layer setup we need in order to import an Illustrator file into AE.

Requirements: 3D Matchmoving software, in this tutorial Naim uses Boujou (download the trial version here) but any matchmoving software will work. A very affordable option is PFHoe (download the trial version here). Other options are Synth-Eyes (download the trial version here) and PFTrack (download the trial version here)
Mocha for AE which ships with After Effects CS4. To use with CS3 you can get Mocha AE here

( )NAIM February 4th
Hi Guys… Its Naim…
Sorry i can’t give the footage out for this tutorial… it’s not mine to give out. I wiil try to provide the footage for my next tutorials.
Thanks for watching, and for the coments.
( )Petrus01 February 4th
very nice indeed, but a little out of touch with most of AE users out there. Boujou costs 10,000 bucks: wayyyy out of base.
( )Lloyd Alvarez February 4th
@Petrus – Agreed that Boujou is expensive. This is why we included links to other Matchmoving software. PFHoe only costs £49. Boujou is the market leader, however, which is why it’s great to be able to learn how it works.
( )Roger February 4th
This is a ridiculous “tutorial” for an After Effects website. It has very little to do with AE and almost everything to do with a program that costs more than most professionals are willing to spend. The trapcode tutorials are fine because they exist within the AE architecture. These 3D matchmoving programs do not. There isn’t any footage released so that the viewer can even follow along….so exactly what is the point here? I’m sure there are lots of other pricey Hollywood-studio programs out there….why not go over to DreamWorks and see if they can whip up a tutorial on how they made a segment from the new Transformers movie. Just about as relevant….Cool effect….pointless for a AFTER EFFECTS tutorial site.
We need more stuff from Lloyd. Every single tutorial put out by Lloyd has been awesome!
( )Jon Draper April 14th
Don’t mean to point out the error in your comment….but leave it alone, its an awesome tutorial, and there are links to similar cheaper software at the top.
Also if you want to become a great after effects creator its worth learning other software to support it. Be it tracking software, 3d software or photoshop, also it is is essential to have some basic Adobe illustrator knowledge, for breaking down eps files, logos or creating vector graphics easily to go in your projects.
Andrew Kramer does the same thing over at videocopilot.net mixing in lots of Photoshop (which everyone should learn), a bit of 3ds max (which is expensive, but the ideas can be used across all 3d packages).
This Tutorial is excellent and just what I needed for my current client project, mixing text into tracked footage….creating a killer mood video…(if thats even possible)…
( )Merewald Valletta February 4th
That’s awesome! thanks so much for the tut!
( )NAIM February 4th
Ok Guys… so do you think that the next time i use matchmoving software it should be with somthing a little more affordable?
SynthEyes, PFHoe?
( )Roger February 4th
Anytime external software is used, it should be used to enhance AFTER EFFECTS. the way trapcode does. AE is being used to enhance the matchmoving software here. In addition, any footage used should be available so the user can follow along or acceptable replacement footage should be recommended. Otherwise, you end up with people saying “hey great effect” but not really learning a single thing which is sorta the whole point of a “tutorial”
( )Charfish Charlie February 4th
Hey Naim,
Great tutorial! And yeah…a PFHoe tutorial would be great for the next one. Much more affordable. I don’t have a problem with watching BouJou-type tutorials ’cause there’s always something to learn, but PFHoe is a lot more accessible to the newbies out there who don’t work for big production firms.
Naim, you sound like the nicest guy in your tutorials. Thanks for the great lesson.
Everyone else, if you need some free footage to play with, try here: http://stockfootageforfree.com/. Some of it sucks, but a lot of will work just fine with Naim’s tut.
( )Jasfish February 4th
Or here’s an interesting concept .. you could actually go shoot some of your own footage and create your own illustrations.
( )Lloyd Alvarez February 4th
@Roger – I am glad you like my tuts
To answer your point, believe it or not I learned a lot myself from Naim’s tutorial. What I am aiming to do with AETUTS is to provide tutorials for all levels of AE users and hopefully encourage you to learn something that you might have not have thought was possible with AE before. Having said that, please keep the honest feedback coming. We listen to all of it!
( )Some Guy February 4th
One great thing about this if you do not have boujou or access to boujou is that you will learn how to use what boujou gives you in ae. That way if you ever come across someone that wants you to use what they got out of boujou in ae you can. Boujou is also close to other tracking softwares so you can learn terminology and stuff form this and apply it to the cheaper softwares plus there isnt enough boujou training on the net so this is great. So i say this totally has something to do with after effects and should be here on this site beacause it teaches you to use after effects with 3d tracking software. I like the tutorial and hope to see more in the future. Thanks for this one!
( )NAIM February 4th
@Roger, well i would like to say thanks for the comment, but after reading your post about .. uhmmm.. 20 times… i actuly realised you didn’t comment on the actual content of the tutorial, you just seemed to rant on about the software used…
Well if i do more matchmoving in future tutorials, i’ll be sure to use PFHoe.
Thanks for the comments all ( even Roger:) )
( )NAIM February 4th
As a work around for the footage issue, if you all head over to
http://www.vimeo.com/groups/aetuts
we can all decide on footage to use from the vimeo site as most clips are available for download.
Once we have all decided on the footage i will download it, get a camera track and upload the Boujou file to the files section of the aetuts user group.
How does that sound?
( )liam February 4th
are you sure you shouldve used Free move as opposed to nodal pan?
( )JohnM. February 4th
I kind of agree with Roger because I usually come here and find tutorials on AE, since that’s all I have. This tutorial was informative nonetheless. I’ve seen this effect on many commercials and always wondered how they did it. It would be GREAT if you could do the same thing using only AE.
( )FLLAD February 4th
I can’t believe there are so many people here complaining about this tutorial. First this is a great tutorial. Second this a great demonstration of how to intergrate software outside of AE with AE. That’s very useful knowledge that your getting for free. And with all the complaints about Boujou being too expensive and that he should have used some other software it should be common knowledge that these tracking programs are all very similar. Learn one and the rest are easy. People would pay a lot of money for tutorials like this so stop complaining.
( )eve February 4th
Congrats for the amazing work.
Isnt that great that some people teach to other people – even having no clue who they are?
Even better: isnt great that we all can learn with each other using internet? For free! Of course, we all have needs, goals, and style. BUt i’ve always believed that style comes from the mix of everything, or anything that you think you need.
Cheers.
( )eve February 4th
Oh, JohnM.,
yeah you can do that scene as we see in the clip – only using AE. Note that im not speaking about the new CS4 built in feature. Im talking about using track points, expression, and more track points! We can cover 2.5d shots in AE, but with a bunch of extra work. ANd i mean a lot of extra work. Boujou does it while you’re handbanging. Mocha swings and does it really well too – but only Boujou gives you a really 3D scene information pack – what means the whole vfx pipeline is speaking the same language.
Cheers.
( )illd February 4th
Great Tutorial! Just because its an advanced one!!!!
( )jasfish February 4th
I agree completely with FLLAD. Why are so many people complaining about this tutorial? There are so few advanced tutorials on After Effects it’s nice to see some.
This is very well done. Advanced users use plug-ins and tools like Boujou and Cinema4D and whatever it takes to get the job done. If you’re just a hobbyist, stop your b!tch!ng and be happy places like this, with free tutorials, exist.
And I’ll re-iterate what I said earlier .. shoot your own footage and create your own illustrations and make your own design. It doesn’t take that much effort and it’s just as easy to follow along with.
Sorry to vent, but I’m sick and tired of seeing all the negative vibes on this site. Constructive crits are fine .. but most of these come off as whiny and needy.
If a certain tutorial doesn’t fit YOUR needs, wait for another one. There’s plenty of variety to suit almost any level of user here.
( )Roger February 4th
Naim….how didn’t I comment on your tutorial? You used AE to ENHANCE your use of an external program. That is NOT an AE tutorial. HALF of the tutorial was spent in an external program. Sorry…dude…that is NOT an AE tutorial. Show me another tutorial here where HALF of the tutorial has been spent OUTSIDE After Effects?
Great effect. You obviously know what you are doing….but seriously….NOT for this site. A great GENERAL motion graphics tutorial. Maybe great for Motiongraphicstuts.com….but NOT for AE. How many people here do you honestly think own the program you used? Seriously?
Sorry to seem like I’m complaining….but I’m still attempting to find the usefulness in your tutorial. Great entertainment…but far from useful for 99% of the people here. Look over Lloyd tutorials…..those are the ones that mean something to 99% of the people here.
( )NAIM February 5th
@Roger… hello again, so far only you have commented on the lack of usefullness of this tutorial (only you). Some have commented on the choice of software, but none (other than you) have said it was useless. (so i’ m not sure that 99% is right)
The reason that boujou is in here is to give people an idea of the whole workflow of this clip. Which people should know, if they want a carrer in VFX. In part 2 we will spend more time in AE.
Remember AE is a compositing program, if your skill set only includes AE then you will become an extremly limited compositer. AE is geat.. but AE plus Boujou (or cheaper matchmoving software)… now thats unstopable.
@liam, i tried the nodal pan on the rehersal, but it didn’t want to work, kept giveing me a jummpy solve, so i decied to roll with the free move. Well spotted.
( )gikkingen February 5th
wow. thanks a lot this tutorial is awesome and vuetyful.
( )Trevor McPherson February 5th
Hi Naim. I think this kind of tutorial is extremely useful. You can’t please everyone all the time so don’t get too worried about that. The fact is, this is a common visual effect requirement for professionals. Let’s not pander to a few people and dumb down the tutorials so that they are relevant to everyone all the time. At the rate you guys are releasing these tuts, there will be plenty of relevance to a wide variety of professionals. Keep em coming please!
( )NAIM February 5th
thanks Trevor
( )Daily Designs February 5th
Awesome tutorial, I havent worked much with paths in After Effects, so it is good to know that I can make such things flow in that way.
Thank you very much, cant wait for day 2!
( )Patrick Riley February 5th
Awsome tutorial only problem is bouju cost an arm leg and kidney!!! check out my website currently under construction http://www.hazystudio.com or search hazy studio on youtube.
( )Billy February 5th
Naim, I think what Roger is attempting to show is that as an AFTER EFFECTS tutorial it is “useless.” Not my word, mind you. He is correct in that over half of the tutorial is spent in an outside project. The entirety of the project if very useful but it is limited in its application as an AFTER EFFECT tutorial. He is correct in that all the other tutorials here are exclusively AE. Incorporating outside programs is great as long as they are not THE tutorial. I would agree with Roger in that any outside projects should be accentuating AE not the other way around.
Great job. Very cool technique. I wish I could afford Boujou. However working in the industry now for 10 years, I have never had the use for it. It would be nice but I’ve never had a need. Guess my work has just not gone that direction.
Good luck….looking forward to the rest
( )Mike February 5th
Great tutorial! Roger seems to be a bit emotionally high strung about tutorials. The web is a big place, I am sure he’ll find something he likes somewhere. Keep up the good work.
( )Jim February 5th
I really liked this Tutorial. Even though I know that I will never have Boujou in my classroom, I liked the look of the final project, Naim’s breezy, easy to follow style and I liked seeing “what else is out there.”
Who knows? If I ever leave the classroom and go back into the industry, I will once again be in the position to evaluate and recommend software. This kind of tutorial gives me a leg up. And I think that Naim has provided some pretty decent insight into the depth and scale that After Effects can be used. Can’t wait to see part 2!
( )Jim Musana February 5th
Hi NAIM,many thanks for this tutorial.
I don’t understand why some people are complaining.Remember guys that these people invest a lot o their time to see that we get to learn and become pros in our work. Some of us get our livelihood on such skills that we get to learn from such tutorials.
Its not about what programme one has used but i think its about having a variety of skills and tips of the entire work flow in VFX.
Its about taking our skills to the next level.
If you feel this tutorial is useless to you,i request that you just ignore it instead of writing nonsense because what might not interest you interests others!
Keep up the good work NAIM and the entire AETUTS Team.

Sweet tutorial! Very good, would like to see more of these kinds of broadcasting tuts. Only question I have is to explain more details: For example in the Boujou, export you change some values, but don’t explain why. If you would give a little more explanation I would understand the program better.
Can’t wait to see more of your tutorials. Thanks!

I will guarantee that this tutorial is the LEAST watched and copied tutorial that has been on this site.
How many people honestly have Boujou? How many people have ANY matchmoving software?
Great tutorial to “watch” but very, very few people actually learned anything that they will be able to use in their own work.
Face it. This is not an AE tutorial. It’s a $10,000 Boujou tutorial.
Welcome to Boujoututs.com…..
Good grief…
( )FLLAD February 6th
Hey Roger what in the world is your problem? I f you don’t like this tutorial don’t use it. Stop complaining about it. I have never seen someone as negative as you! Its not like your paying for it!
( )If your trying to prove some kind of point this is not the place to do it!

Jim Musana – “I don’t understand why some people are complaining.Remember guys that these people invest a lot o their time to see that we get to learn and become pros in our work.”
Well, you know they getting a fee for creating tutorials, right?
( )illd February 6th
@ Roger:
( )I just bought me a matchmoving software (syntheyes).
Sorry to say that, but you are arguing like an idiot…
Jake February 6th
Love this and don’t let the naysayers put you off, I have syntheyes which is excellent and very affordable. Great to see advanced AE tutes and lots more please
( )Levi February 6th
My two cents regarding the whole useful/useless argument: Even if this tutorial focuses on an external program, one can still glean useful insight from Naim. Therefore, useful.
( )Jim February 6th
When I first started out in broadcasting, video cameras were a new, semi-reliable technology. Camcorders were several years off and digital effects were very expensive and consisted of basic squeeze frames and Picture-In-Picture applications. Now, what once could only be handled by a multi-million dollar studio can now be accomplished with a decent computer and about $1000 worth of software. This technological jump has been both good and bad.
The good parts are obvious. The bad parts are not so obvious. Because the new wave of digital effects are software driven, they can easily be pirated and downloaded for free through illegal file sharing. Video cameras are now included on cell phones and HD is available for a fraction of what the first video cameras cost. All this has made the world of video editing accessible to the hobbyist for the first time in history.
But in a world of cell-phone cinematographers and You Tube directors, there are still people out there who do this sort of work professionally. The competition is fierce and if you don’t grow, you don’t succeed. Naim’s tutorial addresses this without having to say so. It is VERY useful for the professional editor/compositor and I am glad I had the chance to see it.
I may never have Boujou or any other movement tracking software but I am NOT afraid to learn and I am not afraid to widen my perspective. I have seen this effect in use and have always asked myself, “How did they do that?” Now I know and I am wiser for it.
So if you have limited prospects for professional growth, if you’ve never looked at something and wondered how it was done, if you’ve ever followed a tutorial and can ONLY recreate what was in the tutorial without applying the information to something new and fresh, then perhaps this isn’t the place for you.
But I have always liked the Envato Network sites because they are geared to professionals. They don’t treat me like a novice and they share very useful (USEFUL) techniques. Keep it up and thanks!
( )Kid February 6th
Thank You Naim for this wonderful gift.

awesome tutorial…
roger -i unleash Christian Bale on you…..
( )RandomEntity February 8th
roger is obviously not a professional. If you’re trying to get a job and ALL you know is After Effects, good luck. Matchmoving is a VERY VERY big part of VFX. And this video is only part one of the tutorial. so saying that “half” of the tutorial was done in an expensive program is just foolish.
( )You WILL need to learn 3DSmax, Cinema 4D and some sort of matchmoving software along the way, and when and IF you land a decent job at a studio, you’ll have to use Boujou, and then figure out how to integrate that information into AE.
there are many AE tutorials online that spend a lot of time in other applications, just take a look at VideoCopilot.net. know why? BECAUSE YOU NEED TO!
so in short, stop complaining.

I don’t know what everyone is complaining about. The tutorial is relevant because if you get a job in this business they might have Boujou and expect you to learn it.

Don’t listen to the complainers, this tut is amazing and I know myself and many others truly appreciate your time and effort you put forth to make this very valuable tutorial! It is one of the only free, quality tutorial on the internet that I have come across, other than Andrew Kramer’s over at videocopilot.net. Anyways, once again, thank you for the time you took to make this for us and I can’t wait to see part two, and I hope you stick with Boujou becasue it is a very good program and I would like to learn even more about it!

Hello,

But Mocha can NOT do 3D tracking…only 2D, right (i’m a bit confused)?!
Is PFHoe more like Boujou and able to set 3d tracking points on a 2d-footage, like in this movie to the wall in the back and to the lantern in the front?
