Create A Facial Morph Without Using 3rd Party Plug-ins

Tutorial Details

Final Product What You'll Be Creating

In this tutorial we’ll show you how to create a cool morphing face effect. We’ll bring two face images into After Effects and align them. By keyframing the “Liquify” plug-in to reshape the images, we’ll be able to animate from one face to the other smoothly. I will also show you two different ways to make hair appear to grow.

This is the cheap way to create a shape shifting effect. As I say in the tutorial: If you want to go further into the world of shape shifting check out RE:vision’s plugin RE:Flex which automates the process and allows you to reshape and reform one image into another to create a very quick, convincing result.

im very imressed about this technique. amazing tutorial!
is that also possible with video footage?

      Thank you so much:)
This is my first tutorial so I am very happy that you like it.

I am planning to create a tutorial on how to use this effect with video footage. I am still finding out how to do so but until then try experimenting a little. Maybe you could make 2 videos. One of Actor1 and one of Actor2. Make sure that you position Actor2 in the same pose that Actor1 was in when you stopped recording the first video. (Also put your camera on a tripod so the background is the same in both videos) Then bring the two clips into After Effects and call the first video Video1 and the second one Video2. Trim Video1 so that Actor1 is in the same position as Actor 2 in the beginning of Video2.

If you go to the beginning of the timeline and hit play you should see Video1 playing and after the end of it Video2 begins. Make the transition smoother by adding a fade with some opacity keyframes.

Now just try messing around with “Liquify” like in the tutorial: Make Actor1 look like Actor2 and the other way around. Animate the shapeshifting effect and there you have it…kind of:)

Sorry if this is hard to understand. Its pretty complicated to explain in words.
I hope you figure something out.

      Have a nice day:)

If you shoot in an uncontrolled environment it’s probably worth throwing a green screen up so you don’t need to worry about things like lighting changes or tree’s moving in the wind. Also it would make your trick with the hair a nightmare.

        Thanks, thats a good idea:)

Also if you shoot your actor on a greenscreen you dont have to worry about warping the background. If the background is affected by the distortion it will ruin the effect.

So yeah with some good greenscreen software and some lighting that matches your scene, this would be the way to do it.
