Tutorial Details

Final Product What You'll Be Creating

In this tutorial, I’ll be walking you through my compositing process for creating this MQ-9 Reaper UAV shot that I put together a couple of weeks ago. We’ll talk about 3D Tracking in After Effects CS6, Exporting 3D information from AE to C4D, Rendering from C4d and finally some compositing techniques in After Effects.

Very cool tutorial but no idea why you apply Light Wrap, I think this just did what matte choker cane do- added an outline (in your case white) which does not make the drone look realistic. Now after your tutorial I rechecked your final video and can clearly see the white outline on the drone. Looks not real if you focus on it. Otherwise great video. I would avoid this one effect.

lol couldn’t you just get a 2d image file of the drone, animate the snow, and then just animate a simple scale and position/rotation? Lol it didn’t even look like it was 3d at all

This tutorial was intended to show the techniques used in the overall process, not to necessarily show 3d being used in the most flashy way possible. Many professional films use 3d models in a mundane way because it’s far more realistic looking than to have the camera jet around a 3d model.

Did you really have to use a drone, of all things…

    • Jesse

As opposed to what? Whether you agree with their use or not, they’re commonly used in spy films.
