Final Product What You'll Be Creating

In today’s tutorial, we will be looking at a Bullet Time freeze effect that I created in After Effects. All the effects were done in AE, using 2D source files. I will give a brief overview on how I shot the footage, stabilized it, and optimized it for this effect.

  1. And you made it! Great! Only one thing I am missing…the bullet path. You should make it in V 2.0 dude. Haven’t seen the tut now but can say WOW! :)

Now kids can make video like Hollywood producers, cool effect

    • jink says:

producers don’t do VFX, someone PLEASE delete this spambot!!!

    • brij nandan says:

jink is right. Artist makes everything. Producers do nothing in studio.

    • Has no one else realized that “Mia” is spam? Put a picture up of a pretty girl to capture attention from us lonely nerds. “A hot girl who also likes After Effects? Awesome!” we cry in unison. Then, when we click on her hyperlinked name, hoping to see a nerdy girl’s After Effects online portfolio, we are spammed by a web hosting company. Oldest trick in the book I tell ya!

Come on Daniel… that’s no way to speak in front of a lady! Mia is welcome here… keep in mind this is the only female interaction some guys might get… haha, I’ll see if I can block the user.

      • Kevin says:

Actually, the first vfx studio I ever visited was about 50% females doing after effects work. I was truly surprised. :D

      • U r right KEVIN……u should be surprised…
but dude..do they really work there for after effect or….. hi hi hi hi…u know what i mean…BOSS & Female Empolye…

Like…when in that studio .”A female employ” goes in the cabin of Boss to show the “Presentation”…Boss see some other presentation….then boss to “ACTION EXPRESSION” over the “COMP LAYER” of her body put that girl on a “ADJUSTMENT LAYER” on the table…took his “SOLID” out from his pants “ROTATE” that “SCALED Solid”…then give her a “EXPRESSIONS”….and puts his “Solid” into her “NULL OBJECT” then after a “9 MONTH RENDER A QUICK TIME SMALL MOVIE IS ABOUT TO COME…only if a abortion pill kinda RENDER FAILED REPORT Doesn’t Occurred…”"

and by the way…u only watch them working…u haven’t seen their quality work i guess…..

        THANKS for READING…..
        i love after effect..

Actually guys I teach post production and motion graphics using AE at a college here in Greece, and I can tell you there are many beautiful girls who like (and do some pretty good stuff also) After Effects!

      • Spencer says:

A friend of mine (who is a girl) worked as a compositor at ILM for years. She mostly worked in Nuke though (and Shake, before Nuke’s time).

  3. brij nandan says:

    Good tut!

I have done like this one but not so good.

    Keep it up :)

  4. Adam says:

    Beautiful effect, some great techniques.

  5. Eric Sneider says:

Very smart! Nice use of the 3D layers and rotation! Will certainly keep these techniques in mind.

  6. aparadekto says:

Hey, I can’t view your site properly within Opera, I actually hope you look into fixing this.

  7. Jay says:

Good effect but record it next time after you do your try and error stuff. I was getting aggressive listening to your jibberish.
    Better luck next time….

  8. Thonbo says:

really annoying to see that you dont hold alt when adjusting parameters and position object to preview the result in realtime… makes your experience look a little beginnerish’

    • Jeremiah says:

Hey, thanks for the feedback! I’ve been using AE for about 3 years, but I’m not familiar with the technique you’re referring to, or maybe I am, but I’m confused by your wording. Could you elaborate on this technique?

    Hi there,

I liked the tutorial, but there are some things which I would like to see in future.

-why should I take the same clip for fixing the displacement, when I could press the “Wrap around pixels”-button in the actual effect, which takes care of it? :)
-you are using 60p footage and stabilized it with some open-source stuff; that’s great, but why 60p? You didn’t do something with all these frames, at least you didn’t show it. Try to show what you are doing with the 60p clip so it gets to the slow motion, or even better: use 30p footage recorded the right way to get the best result out of non-slow-motion footage. It’s more interesting when you get more people involved with the actual capabilities; not everyone can usw a 6000€ Camcorder :) of course it would be nice to see before-after things from Deshaker, maybe even a short use of it.

I like the effect, maybe I’ll use it some time (but with more action, of course) :) Good luck for the future!

ps: I’m not a native english speaker either, it’s nice to see some others who aren’t fully awared of it :)

    • Hey man, thanks for commenting!

Wow, I actually didn’t see that for some reason. :-P

The reason I filmed it in slow motion was to get smoother motion. One doesn’t need to film in slow motion, 30fps or 24fps is fine. I didn’t have a lot of light left at the time to stabelize the camera, so I “cheated” in a way by filming in slow motion. I didn’t have to do anything to the footage to make it “slow motion”, it does that when I play it back.

It took me recording this tutorial several times to get it right (I had a lot of issues with the program I was using). I showed how to stableize the footage in several versions, along with explaining that you can get the same results with a cheaper camera. Sadly, I was really tired of having to redo the tutorial 7 times, so on the last attempt I did forget some things. :-(

-ps: I’m not a native english speaker either, it’s nice to see some others who aren’t fully awared of it

LOL, are you saying I don’t sound like a native speaker? :-P

    wicked effect m8 likin it

  12. Pionicor says:

Maybe you could add a little bit evolution to that fractal noise to make it look like it’s not a frozen world, but just really slow motion. Nice tut by the way :)

  13. Austen says:

Awesome man, I bet you feel pretty awesome about Freddiew and CorridorDigitals new stuff on youtube.com using these kinds of effects.

PS: what you said about reading is totally true. Glad to see I am not the only one ;)

    Awesome tutorial.
