Final Product What You'll Be Creating

I came across and this short film and it reminded me of so many friends’ first video projects… except done really well. I asked David to show the basic techniques he used to create this effect driven action sequence. He’ll show some Time Remapping, Distortion, and Color Correction tips that could even save you from running into yourself in an old building…

    Nice one!

  2. tomson says:

    nice two !

  3. Aido says:

I hate this player. It glitches all the time. Its hard to tell a time remapping effect when it keeps glitching!! ala Twitch! ha!

after checking 5 or 6 times it looks like a great effect!!

    Nice 3!

  4. Alex C. says:

    nice 5!

    uhm, nice 4! :p

Great tutorial! Always enjoy learning how to from a premade clip…

  5. MovieMaker says:

Really cool effect! Maybe the tuts websites should think about making a new website for just film? They have one for photography :).

    • Logic says:

      Yeah, that would be great!

    • Lyndon says:

Im w/ you on that one homie. I started to think about ae and how seting up shots are very important for getting the best overall result so that makes perfect sense…

As for the tutorial, killer. I like how it looks so ill have to check it out :)

  6. George says:

    Nice 6 i guess :D :D great tut bro

Wow, thanks for the positive feedback!

  8. IANH - BR says:

    Perfectly!
    thats are we need!
    thaks!

  9. Logic says:

Great!. Color correction, just what i was looking for!

  10. cutterstrophe says:

Hey…really likes this one…always refreshing to see guys using basic after effects techniques to achieve great looking sequences…also liked your sound editing in the final shot…think it does 40 percent of the impression…

  11. David says:

The slowness of the talking and pointing out obvious things makes watching this tutorial really annoying.

Say only what is absolutely necessary, do it fast and put more energy into it.
Make it seem like it’s a breeze creating it, even though it’s not. A lot of planning “how to present” is done off camera.

Learn from the best, my suggestion is Andrew Kramer and you will make excellent tutorials. Thanks for this one!

  12. ethan28 says:

    whow! reallllyyyyyy nice! :))
    was perfectly done!
though kinda reminds me of texas massacre shots. :))

  13. Abojung says:

Basic editing, Nothing Advanced in color correction.
in a whole, not at all impressive.

    • kunami says:

Maybe it’s not advanced but there are people of all levels who watch these so I’m sure there are plenty of people who can learn from them. These guys take time to make FREE tutorials and should be appreciated. If you think it’s not advanced enough for you there are plenty of advanced tutorials available but there’s no need to leave dick comments.

    • Kolenik says:

There are more people like me who wants to know how using basic AE tools, effects and techniques to make great results like is in this tutorial. Thanks for share!

    • Kurt says:

its not always about how advanced an effect is… its all about the final product whether its the blare witch project or transformers… both great movies but both on completly different scales of advanced effects

  14. ckRED says:

    Another basic tut :(

  15. harry says:

well.. i’ve been holding back for quite some time (ever since i paid for the + membership) but this “tutorial” DID IT!

what’s next ? a 30min tutorial on how to import different types of footage ?
    how to use Hue&Saturation ?

What is going on lately ? please, either differentiate the tut content/uploads and offer a completely noob/basic AEtuts microsite, or simply quit accepting/posting such basic stuff altogether !

    • Ben Morgan says:

I have vented my frustration recently to on the last post (tuts roundup). Its a joke that the month I decide to pay to join (even if it’s only $9!) this site seems to get worse and worse.

Look back to page one, follow it through and so many of the tuts are so good. Flick forward to when they decide to charge us to use the site (albeit a voluntary fee) and the tuts are…well, basic as hell and boring.

Where’s the good stuff aetuts? Like i said previously, it’s lucky i came accross some half decent Nettuts and PSDtuts content on the plus site as I have not found a decent file for AEtuts on there.

I sound like an asshole, but it’s seriously annoying when i thought i’d be investing into some decent content as the site has changed it’s business model, i figured things were looking up again.

But surely – can’t you people agree / notice the drastic reversal in good tuts, interesting and “wow” factor tuts?

      • Ben Morgan says:

please understand that i am aware of the film in question here, which the breakdown is based on, and it’s a pretty good film. But the point I’m getting at is there is nothing really challenging here, and most of us on here know how to edit and colour grade by no.

I’m just looking for something meaty and challenging with some inspiring technique to watch in my spare time where i can actually be like “cool, that was a sweeeeet tut”

    Author

Hey thanks again for comments and critizism. This tutorial is in basix category (and for a good reason) so it´s probably not meant for advanced ae users.

    Thanks, David

  17. ckRED says:

Oh, didn’t know they split it into categories. Alright then

  18. BabbaJay says:

Stop to hate -> innovate !!!

    Nice work anyway Mardy..

.. and now gimme the spliff ;)

  19. Awesome says:

Wow this site blows. This might take the cake for worst tut, right next to the district 9 thing…

  20. I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss this tutorial. It’s quite nice.

  21. Honza says:

Not bad, not good…. nothing new :(

  22. jink says:

i watched boharg II, was it a project for fun? because it was strenuous just watching.

  23. Nice! to many slow mo effects for that one piece but it’s great!

  24. Billy says:

I wanted to wait to comment to see what others would say. Imagine all these negative comments….and not ONE from Billy. Wow. I thought I was the innovator of all things negative around here.

I had to laugh when I saw this tutorial. Not laughing AT it….but laughing that in the midst of the eventual demise of this site they would throw up a color correction tutorial. What’s next….a tutorial on what keyframes are? Maybe a tutorial on using the blur plugin?

There hasn’t been a stellar tutorial on here in weeks. I have to go back to October 11th and the Writing with Colored Sand tutorial to find even a “good” tutorial and then back to Satya’s Best Sound You’ll Ever See turtorial on September 16. So….2 decent tutorials in 2 months. We used to see two a week. This place keeps getting worse.

Signing up for tutsplus right now would be ridiculous. If you like PS you would have signed up a long time ago. If you like AE….I’d save your money and get the Making it Look Great series.

    • harry says:

i wholeheartedly agree. the Plus membership isnt worth it. i’ve dropped my subscription already. such a pitty…
one thing that really bugs me though, is that the AE+ membership introduction “happened” to coincide with the Lloyd Alvarez tutorial, making some of us jump onto the “opportunity” at the time…
no such occurence ever since… is it just me ?

    • Paul says:

I agree with u Billy, some have been good, some have been bad. This wasnt the best tut on this site (he did a video though! :) )

But this tut has been placed in the BASIX section (Look right to the top)

Trouble is – everyone is a different levels of learning on AE – you will please some and disapoint others no matter what. If a very good yet complex tut comes out – the basic learners will find it a nightmare… i dunno – food for thought.

    • will says:

tutsplus is class, this site seams usless for you Billy, would suggest you look else where. Or better rasie the bar , but tutsplus for me its fantastic.

i was just a web deisgner css, html , now thanks to TUTS+

      i am proficient in

      AE
      PHP
      Some Javascript
      Photoshop Skills Advanced

and all for 9 bucks a month

i hope to god AE stays the same way it is , as if you look at the Feedburner total 10524 , and the amount of negative comments its prob less than 0.01%

      Keep up the good work

      • Billy says:

I have been on this site since day one. The amount of negative comments over the past 3 months is HARDLY “less than 0.01%”. tutsplus might be worth it if you are into audio, ps, photography, etc., but it is CLEARLY not been worth it since they opened it up for AE. If you are getting tutsplus simply for the AE….you smoking crack. Look at the quality of the tutorials since they opened it up with Lloyd’s tutorial. It is hilarious that they had Lloyd do one…as if saying how great the tutsplus was going to be. NOTHING since then as been anywhere as good….and to my knowledge that is the ONLY tutorial that has been for JUST tutsplus members. Why do I want project files from basic tutorials (the only tutorials that have been put up since Lloyd’s).

This site has become largely useless. As my after effects skills have increased, this site has pumped out more and more basic tutorials. Not the way it always was. The beginning 2-3 months of this site featured some of the best tutorials on the internet. Now….you can find better stuff on youtube most days. Hardly my own opinion, there my good man. Look around at just this comment string. Your belief that only “0.01%” of the comments are negative fails miserably just here.

      • will says:

0.01% mybe to low how is 1% for you

        1% of 10 524 = 105.24 negative comments

“CLEARLY not been worth it since they opened it up for AE.”
“Signing up for tutsplus right now would be ridiculous.”

tuts+ is more than just AE mate, if your happy only learning only one skill then you should head over to more dedicated AE sites.

in my opinion TUTS, flashden, themeforest temps ect ect , try and cater for everyone . more so for the majority (Semi-Skilled Learners) not advanced skills.

if they did cater for members like you only, then in your words “eventual demise of this site ” would happen

it seems to me billy that you would rather tell every other member like me, who likes the tuts+ that we are thick and your so far ahead of us

I know your not directly commenting on my AE skills but when other members see you pointing out that the skills they are learning are SO EASY , its a little annoying

  25. Susanne says:

Quality-wise it looks like dekra stuff. The tutorial writer should know what i mean.

  26. thispwns says:

    Very helpful! ty

  27. tvandang says:

very nice. i like it a lot! thank you so much my friend.

  28. dave says:

    you sound like Bruno

  29. eminemchris says:

thanks for ur tut dude it is really amazing and cool one

but i m facing one problem in time remapping in AE

the thing is wen is apply time remapping it automatically creates the key frame from start to the end of the video and if i create any new key in btw the shot and wen i got to the graph editor the line is not in straight path like in ur video it was like curve and if i try to curve the spline where i need to get slow motion it is not working.
