Final Product What You'll Be Creating

Today we’ll take a look at how to get the best results from DSLR footage while using Twixtor. We’re going to talk about what you can do to ensure that you have good footage to work with and also how to work with “less than perfect” footage as well! Damnn, that was sick! Was that all done with the techniques implemented in this video? And was 1/4000 the highest shutter speed you could or wanted to achieve?

  • http://coroflot.com/giridharsharma Giridhar

    Awesome Video.

Well, I have Nikon d5100 which captures videos at the rate of 25Fps.
Will this work out for me?
And, if not, do you have any suggestion to achieve same or near-about result from any 25-30Fps Video capture device?

Again thank you for this SLO-MO video :) :).

    Regards.

I have done some shots in 30fps (on my T2i) and it was okay with pixel motion. Some shots had a lot of artifacts, but the ones shot on a tripod looked epic. Without panning, I could achieve almost 1/500 speed.

Also, it looks better when u isolate your subject.

    man thanks you

  • morescano

First of all, I apologize for my English.

but, it is possible that there is no way to create SlowMotion fluids with sources at 24fps or 25fps?
one described, it seems a way too complicated to get a clip of 10 seconds.

    Hello and thanks

  • Hobo

The roto part seemed a little heavy for this project. Did you try the roto brush tool, or the difference matte? Those seem like quicker options. Otherwise, excellent tut!

  • http://www.creativedojo.net VinhSon Nguyen

Man, people are a little harsh on the rating system lately, I don’t believe this tutorial deserves a 2 star rating ;)

I agree with Hobo though, kind of heavy on the roto work considering this a a Twixtor tutorial, but great work at presenting the pre production stuff and Twixtor for AE. This should really help those starting Twixtor for the first time.

please do sync the audio please….

  • Swire

Nice, jag hade en liten teori om att du rotoscopa lite men inte på sådan grad…

Bra tut, bättre än majoriteten som läggs upp här.

For people asking if their camera or this and that frame rate works just remember the basic introduction in the beginning of the tutorial shows that the more preparation and work you put in shooting the less it will be in post production.

So yes – you can twixtor it but be cautious though. The essence of preparing for Twixtor as Rickard stated was to have clear and crisp picture for Twixtor to work with. So both lighting, shutter speed and frame rate plays their role here only the frame rate does most of the work.

Using X<30 FPS you'll need to compensate and make up for it in both picture quality and post production.

Now on to the Roto Topic.
The basic principle to get around warping was to Roto the object – so this was a quick example and using the roto brush tool – or ANYTHING that take the object out of the image. Remember that is the principle how you do it really depends on the scene and so on.

So with the example here with static leg movement the puppet tool was quick and easy unlike the heavy roto tool. But if we have two people running towards each other in slow motion their leg and arm movement is much more active and noticeable which implies that a roto tool do a better work here.

    I'm out. Great tut!

    And LOL @ Crash!

  • Josh

I did this slowmo clip with some twixtor in there before I saw this tut but now I can’t wait to shoot some more footage now I have seen this tut and see you can use masks etc. ! stoked !

I must admit…I am sort of getting tired seeing video tutorials and such using DSLR’s for a VIDEO camera. You know there are REAL video cameras out there that production companies use and it would be nice to see an example of this using a prosumer camera or above. Not everybody in the world shoots video on REGULAR photo cameras. Yes i know they take good footage BUT they are not practical in many video production shoots. Can we get video tutorials with REAL video cameras.

    • Mike Danger

You must be of an older generation because DSLR’s are the best way to go unless you are making a full length film. I mean even Transformers was made by DSLR’s. Buy one or twelve and you will never turn back.

when rotoing, why use twixtor in the first place?

Thanks for a really good tutorial!

please, fix this, i need to backup this in my study files!

  • Austin

Help! I have been shooting in 59.94 FPS with a Go Pro. My slow mo has not been smooth at all. It’s quite choppy and it pauses over certain frames. Please help!

    • http://exot.tv exot

just go to affter effects. import the orginal footage. drop it as a sequenz. duplicate the time line length of the comp and check your final frame rate. right click on the footage -> select: “Time” -> Time Remapping . strech the footage (its easy to messeare the twice length: just dublicate the layer and shift it to the end of the layer below) shift the last keyframe to the end and now you can render it out as apple prores 48,kHz …. or what ever you need. Check also the Frame Blending. maybe pixel motion is a solution

    Nice tut, Well covered.

This is one of the first tests I did using my Canon 60D. This was done in more optimal conditions ie. a clear solid wall and sky in the background. Please let me know what you think:

    http://vimeo.com/30619855

I have done some other more difficult twixtoring since then, including crowds in the background. I spent weeks trying to fix all of the warps in that situation. I fixed up most of the more noticeable ones but couldn’t clean up everything! Still pretty happy considering the environment and lighting/rain:

May i ask what your computer hardware configurations are?

And THX a lot for the Tutorial!! Helps a lot! Saw your video before and was wondering how it works (:

My computer is a quad core 2ghz, 8gb ram, geforce gt550m.

This is the workflow I’ve used on all my twixtor videos, including the ones with water. Apply twixtor and then do clean up using this or similar techniques. The settings in twixtor are pretty quick to go over to get a good enough result at which point you go in and clean it up.
This tutorial was meant to show you the settings and tips for setting up your dslr camera before shooting and then showing how I work with the footage.

  • Kuni

So am I getting this right… this tutorial is all about rotoscoping and has nothing to do with twixtor. I mean you can get similar results by shooting a clean plate then taking a photo of him while he is in air and then tweak it a little bit with the puppet tool… wouldn’t it be also better to take de roto before you apply the twixtor effect?

I would be much more interesset how you did the effekt with the water!

  • Nick

Link isn’t working. This project is 6 weeks too late! I’ve just finished a slo mo project and battled with warping throughout. Gah. Cheers though!

  • Basel Mousa

The link IS NOT WORKING :((
Hope this problem will be fixed ASAP

  • Yasser

Yep, once again, can someone up the link please?

  • Izmer

DUDE , can u pls fix the download link ? it broken ==

Used Twixtor many time but never put much attention on shutter speed . Thank you for reminding
    about that.

  • Kevin

I have tried the same settings in the camera. 1/4000 xcept I am at 2.8 and I am using a high ISO because I was just testing in my basement.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fogo9NQ1g6A

I would like to do stuff like this. But I have tried smashing cans and dropping stuff into mouse traps. Is what I want to do too fast for Twixtor?

    • http://www.facebook.com/philipzeplin Philip Ask Zeplin-Frederiksen

You may have already figured this out by now, but thought I would reply to you anyway.

I’m afraid you can’t do stuff like that with Twixtor. Twixtor needs a clear image from your camera, with as little and SLOW movement going on as possible. The things you want to do are simply too fast. Not for Twixtor, but for your CAMERA. The video you get in your camera will mostly be motion blur, especially with something like an exploding watermelon, and there’s far too many small moving bits for Twixtor to work with it well anyway. You could use Twixtor to half the speed, or maybe even get it down to 30′ish percent, and it might still look “ok’ish”, but that’s about it.
Put simply: the detailed data Twixtor needs, simply isn’t in the footage you’re able to record.

  • Kevin

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7J6qdei7vs&feature=fvwrel

And this. DO I need a phantom for what I want to do? Because there is no way I could rotoscope out an exploding watermelon

  • Skyter

    Great Tuts ! Thanks :)
