Final Product What You'll Be Creating

Hey folks, in this tutorial we are going to create a mockup opening title sequence for the new T.V show “Aetuts+”. We’ll be doing some time remapping to 60 FPS time lapse sequences, then we’ll track them in mocha with the help of the “Mocha Import +” script by Mamoworld. We’re going to manipulate them to give a higher level of detail by using a method called HDR toning. Finally, we’ll connect are text to the tracked nulls using another excellent product by Mamoworld “iExpressions” So, let’s get started!

    WWOOOAAH!! DUDE!
I was waiting to learn this stuff ever since I watched that bike HUD scene in the movie – “PRIEST”

But why this tutorial size is huge :(
and also, that iexpressions is not free, you should have mentioned this in the “requirements”. Do you have any other option/method to connect those texts?

    Awesome work though \m/.

      Hey Giridhar Sharma,
I’m glad you liked the tutorial. and sorry for the large file size :)

      Here’s some alternative linking options:

      1. Beam to tracking box position – a simple pic-whip linking would do the trick.
      2. Beam to 3D letter position – you would need to use a “toComp” expression, i suggest you Google it.
      3. Letters X,Y,Z separate position wiggle – right click on the letters position, chose separate dimensions and
apply the wiggle expression to the X and Y dimensions.
      4. Letters orientation wiggle – just a simple wiggle would do.

I used iExpressions because is saves you a lot of hassle, and obviously you don’t need to know expressions.

    HDR effect ??
i think it is named as” High Pass Filter Effect ”
it’s just the basic beauty Retouch technique from Photoshop.
    also check: http://maltaannon.com/articles/after-effects/high-pass/
Maltaanon’s technique does this job more comfortable and more advanced.

I guess there are also techniques with the Shadow&HighLight – and Composit Effetcs that
    should do the same.

    greetz,

    great tutorial

      Hey Exot,

I’m glad you liked the tutorial.

“High Pass” and “HDR Toning” – different names and slightly different methods to achieve the same result. but, Maltaanon’s technique uses less layers which contributes to a faster workflow. which makes it a more efficient method then the one i used.

      good call!

Very nice effect, i like it! And the tutorial is excellent, complete and clear! Good job…

    Awesome tutorial!
Really liked it and def want to make use of it to integrate it into my own work!

I only wonder, how did you get the time lapse footage to be 60fps?
I want to shoot my own timelapse, but surely you just set the autoshutter to take
a photo at whatever interval you set it to..
So the 60fps thing must occur when you then import the sequence you shot into AE…
Must be a noobish thing to ask.. but knowing is half the battle imo :)

    Thanks so much!

      Hey J,

The time lapse sequences are not my own, they are available for download at – http://www.openfootage.net/.
when you import any type of footage to AE you can mark it and hit “Ctrl+Alt+G” or right click on it and go to interpret footage – main, in the pop up menu you can change the frame rate.

      • J

        Aaah!
That’s a time saver, but then again… if you want some original footage, you’ll have to shoot it yourself
and be willing to put up with the mistakes and glitches it will have.
Thanks though, never knew about the interpretation and never knew AE could do something cool like that!

        thanks again!

It appears that the Mocha Import + isn’t free either. Do you know of a way around it?

The MochaImport+ is a very intuitive and easy to use tool that is designed to make the AE-Mocha workflow easier and smother. personnel i think it’s a wonderful tool that’s worth every penny.
but if you are not an experienced Mocha user, and cant afford MochaImport+. take a look at a few Mocha tutorials, some of them are available right here on Aetuts+ (http://ae.tutsplus.com/?s=mocha).
in these tutorials you can learn all about the AE-Mocha workflow.
