You can find EKGs made with After Effects everywhere. The good thing about this one is that it just uses shape layers and mattes to create a realistic effect.
This tutorial will teach you how to create the basic shape of the line and how to make it appear over the screen.

Adapting what you learn here, you can move on to create the whole piece, such as this complete EKG for sale at VideoHive.

oh yeah! another amazing tutorial! this i miss, great!

  • Nikolai

Thanks so much, very informative and useful!

No need to be keeping 2 points at each end of the line. Just convert the end point handles so they operate as 2 separate handles instead of one connected one, do this by clicking the pen tool and choosing the tool that looks like a sideways V.

Was the voice recorded in your toilets ?

Of course! That’s where I keep all the recording stuff, just in case I feel the urge.

Nah, seriously, the room where I recorded this is in fact close to the bathroom and has awful acoustics. Will work on improving that. ;)

Very clever, liked it a lot!

  • Phil

Cool, I love shape layers. thnks for this.

question: this could be done with transparent background to put it over a video. Nice tut. thanks for sharing

Yes of course! I think I didn’t use a background on the tut, black shows up as default but you can easily add a video behind the EKG.

      You are welcome!

Great tut! It’s always fun to see what comes up using just AE.

  • Greg

Hey Carlos- nice tut. Some great straight forward and solid techniques in there.

Thanks everyone, happy to see that turns out useful!

    Great tutorial!

Maybe you could make a sequel wherein expressions are used to link audio and digits to the pulse…

    That should be awesome!

(If you’re not dead, that is)

I’m going to be boring and point out some things which do not DIRECTLY relate to your tutorial, but which can be nice background information. By the way, I really enjoyed the tutorial, and the effect looks very good.

What you just made is an old-style, analog electrocardiograph display. The glow, which is entirely accurate for this type of ECG, is caused by a slow-glow picture tube where an electron stream is oscillating at a steady speed, as you described, and where the up-down movement is determined by the readings from the heart.

One of the more modern, and more colourful, displays you mentioned, would not have this glow… unless one wasted computing power on already ridiculously expensive medical equipment to add it in postprocessing, essentially doing the same on the ECG machine itself what you just showed how to do in the tutorial. Likewise, the line would probably not fade behind, but rather be cleared a certain distance prior to being drawn again.

Obviously, for making it look awesome in your movie clip, this is not essential information, but I figured someone, somewhere might be interested in knowing these things :-)

Another thing one could do for a bit of added realism, plus it being useful for the dramatic moments, is to add the ability to up the frequency of the heartbeat (for those moments when our hero has some kind of scary and/or exciting revelation happen while in his sick bed), or even make the line flat out as our unfortunate hero expires… or more likely, his plot hook girlfriend/boyfriend/father/sibling/pet/potted plant :-P
