Final Product What You'll Be Creating

Originally created for a broadcast commercial to showcase a range of Smiley plush characters, I decided to create a tutorial from it because there are many useful techniques I used to go from the original 2d jpegs to a 3d scene with depth, shadows, reflections and even a 3d product logo. As always in AE, there are many ways to achieve an effect…these are just the ones I chose to make this spot.

And you call it a tutorial??? Intermediate??? Where is the editor of this site???

  2. Joao says:

    what is this?

  3. MeatBone says:

Soon we’ll start to see “Intermediate” tutorials on how to double click the after effects icon to open the program…

  4. ashcat says:

yeah, sorry this is pretty basic.. final product isn’t that great but as a basic technique for beginners i guess its a good starting point.

  5. kyle byrne says:

intermediate? whoever decided that should be shot, then roasted over a fire, pushed off a cliff, and then fed to sharks -.-

  6. Keith says:

You need 38 minutes to teach this effect?? Really?

  7. kingsley says:

    I must say,

the quality of tuts has gone down on this site. This is not even a beginners tuturial and if this guy really thought of using this in an actual ad, i would question his chops if I were the client.

    • imothep says:

The editor of this site is sleeping perhaps. In his sleep he approves such tuts and even tag them as “intermediate”.

  8. jink says:

I think the smileys look ok, but how can you get rid of the anti aliasing on the aetuts logo?

  9. rks says:

20 yrs of experience and 353 mb for this ?

  10. Cool article, ncie intro.

  11. Umer says:

wow… this helped me with nothing !!

Intermediate, basic, advanced………… you guys are seriously making this fuzz about just one word?

    • There are some ideas came in my mind and would like to share with the editors of various tut+ sites-
      1) Why don’t you guys make a poll on the future tuts? On one particular date of every month, you can post several tuts examples with the content pitch and the preview and then ask the audience to vote for the tuts they like to be released. This could be done on for 3 levels- beginner, intermediate and advanced. In this way this would be the matter of choice and wouldn’t create fuzz around. Also, only the quality material will come out by doing this.

      2) Also Tuts+ should organize some competitions like Modeling competition, VFX competitions or competition on some theme like “make a haunted scene” etc etc. In this way everybody can participate in it.

I am sorry if this is not the right place to write these points.
      Cheers!

I’m sorry to disagree with most of you.

I found this to be the most tutorial like out of most of the demonstrations which are presented here.

I think he did a fine job. I’m not going to debate “worthiness”. He was well organized, and clear to understand. I don’t even care who the target audience or difficulty level was meant for.

I don’t know what most of you are expecting, but I’m starting to not like reading comments, because most seem self-serving. Maybe a requirement should be to post some of your own work or contributions, prior to posting. Just seems the mods should be concerned AETUTS is becoming a hater comment page like a youtube post.

    • Wesley says:

      Totally agreed.

    • RJClarke says:

You couldn’t have said it better.

This community used to be positive. People used to encourage other ways to achieve similar effects (in a positive manner)…now it just seems like everyone wants to complain about tutorials not being good enough, or about how things are too easy.

  14. f says:

Yuck, major aliasing problems in this. . . .

thanks for the kind words – made me smile after the vitriol posted earlier!

I think the problem for many is they think that if they know a thing, then so must everyone else. That ain’t so, and if you didn’t get anything from the tutorial – tough! I’m sure some will.
    adam

    • Adam, definitely it not an intermediate tut, but I am sure it will be really helpful for starters. Visitors always forget that there are beginners come here also. I totally agree with you.
rks has certainly forgotten that having 20 years of experience doesn’t mean that you can’t make a tut for beginners in detail. Don’t worry of his words, he is garbage, dumped by videocopilot.com people.
      Cheers :)
