How to Create Glowing Elegant Lines

Final Product What You'll Be Creating

In this tutorial you’ll be creating elegant glowing lines using shape layers within After Effects. We’ll create a few basic arc layers and then stylize them by using the find edges effect, glows, and blending modes. I enjoy this technique and you can easily adapt this concept to many different shapes to create some stunning looks.

The abstract music is incredibly distracting.

  2. Thomas says:

Hi! love youre tuts, but how on earth did you change the start point in the shape layer? cant find it in my AE….

  3. Sam says:

Ugh, I can’t even get this to look right. The lines I drew way back when with the pen tool don’t look like yours in the end.

When you finalized yours the lines kind of faded down the coming of the arc… while mine continue out through the whole thing. So when I go to flip it at the end, it just looks weird. A bit hard to explain too.

Could you just upload the .aep file?

  4. cameron says:

Loved this tutorial but might be better without the BG music

  5. Dude Man says:

  6. xROMMELx says:

My first project in AECS4, xD

  7. boogle362 says:

Music is excellent. Zappa I believe. Could only be Zappa I’m sure. Pleasant change of pace from the all the other tutorial presenters and their often times lame attempts at humor. I guess the detractors would prefer the Jonas Brothers but you stick to your guns. Good Tut.

  8. Jonathan Clegg says:

im all for the jazz my man

  9. That was hilarious. I was so focussed on the music I have no idea what the tutorial was about.

Thanks, that tutorial was very useful! It made me think more about the techniques I use.. I wasn’t too sure about the music though! I prefer to play my own music in the bkground when I watch through tutorials..
Thanks again for the tut though!

Great tutorial, but I’d like to toss in one more vote for leaving out the music in the future. It’s… shapes…

  21. kuunami says:

Good tutorial. Whats up with the creepy background music though?

  22. Dirk says:

the result is nice, but you have to explain a lot more. there are times where you just tweak the sliders and say nothing. honestly i’d like some background info why you’re using this or that effect and what you’re actually doing.
in other words: explain more, please

  23. Pam says:

Good tut… BG Music was very annoying though..

  35. The tutorial was nice but the background music was not touching at all. Infact it was distracting, but I found the tutorial interesting and useful still. Thanks

  36. Amaroc says:

hello! tell me what kind of music in this lesson, or what band performs the music

  37. Nicholas says:

    Music was just fine

  38. Jim Bob Square Pants says:

This isn’t so much a Tutorial as much as it is a ‘Watch ME make this cool effect and i’ll tell you every now and then what to do.’

Don’t get me wrong, thanks for the tutorial, but it could definitely use some improvements! The Music ‘DON’T’ it’s really really distracting.

  40. Fabian says:

Hi there. Tried your tut but only managed to get half way before you lost me. The entire tut is way too fast. I think you need to slow down when you are trying to teach others. It’s no use to be going at such a fast pace. You have to understand that a good tut consists of having the student follow you. Maybe you need to split it into two segments as others have done.
    regrads,
    Fabian

Ps: The music is very distracting….

  41. Catel says:

why do you duplicate your comps?

  42. Jack says:

Not a very good tut from my point of view. Besides the distracting background music the author jumps through steps that he doesnt explain, ends up being a bit of a guessing game as to what to do. I followed the tut step by step and my final looked crap.

Would be a good tut to do with a descent presenter.

  43. Dawood says:

I dont have the CC options in the effects list… im stuck at 05.34 in the video “CC vector Blur”… i have AE cs 3 on my xp.. what do i do?

  44. Jacoias says:

when i move the mask, forms me a black line. why???

  45. saher says:

Nive tut but what kind of music is this?

  46. Mykl says:

I swear at 3:22 or so the song is sampling “Predator” lines…

Anyway, it is a good tutorial, and I thought that the music while it was distracting at times it was good to have something to keep me involved during the what in other standard tuts would be dead air.

  47. Bruce says:

This really is the information I want to. Appreciate your writing this posting.

  48. TimChen says:

pretty helpful, thanks a lot :D
