Excellent Explosions and Extreme Extrusions in C4D

Nov 19th in Motion Graphics by Carlos Galvez

In this tutorial, Carlos will teach us how to create extruding text exploding out of a box using C4D. We'll then bring it into After Effects to add more particles and a background. This is excellent effect to go through if you've been wanting to try a 3d program.

ha this one is funny, it’s a literal translation in dutch from the following sentence: You are like trolls, you know that right?

In Dutch the sentence is crap, I suppose it also is in English…

I just got C4D so I will definitely work through this tutorial. However, the extruded text is something that does not require C4D to accomplish. It can be done with Zaxwerk’s 3D Serpentine. However, it is a nice effect….but what isn’t when C4D is involved?

I would change the preview background to something NOT white. It appears to be a 2D square that suddenly explodes into 3D pieces. It isn’t until you watch the tutorial that you can tell (thanks to the purple background) that it is actually a 3D box.

wow… this is actually one of the nicer comment Billy has left… why don’t use ease up buddy? He really was just giving constructive criticism and providing an alternative to C4D for the tutorial.

Oh dude c’mon now… Hate is such a strong word… he is just being honest. You cant hate on somebody just for being honest…

Wait till Billy trashes you and tells you how little he cares about anything you have to say.

        Billy November 20th

Matthew….you are a moron. Firstly….my comment wasn’t even “negative.” I was simply pointing out an OBVIOUS flaw with the preview (but something that WASN’T flawed in the tutorial presentation) and then stating a FACT….you can do the EXACT same thing with the text with a $200 plugin….3D Serpentine. It is a plugin SPECIFICALLY designed to do what Carlos did with the text. Anyone NOT wanting to drop $3500 on C4D can pick up that plugin and using Shatter can almost duplicate this tutorial.

I laugh each and every time I see people getting upset with what I say about a tutorial. They bitch and whine about me being negative. Buy you know what is funny…..they NEVER argue against what I have to say. They NEVER show me where I’m wrong. If I say a tutorial is too beginner….they bitch about me complaining but don’t attempt to show where it ISN’T yet another beginner tutorial. If I comment on how a procedure in a tutorial can be done a different way, they bitch about me complaining but NEVER show where I am wrong.

As I have said a 1000 times around here….the fact that people don’t like me commenting negatively is SOOOO inconsequential to me. If I see something I want to comment about….I will. If you don’t like it….show me where I am wrong!

I stated in my post yesterday that this was a nice effect. I didn’t comment negatively on ANY aspect of the tutorial itself. Some of you, really only Matthew here, need to pull your heads outta your asses and actually improve your reading comprehension.

Tiene muy buena pinta Carlos. Estoy con Billy en que ganaría con un fondo e iluminación más interesante, pero cómo se trata de enseñarnos el CÓMO…

Thanks! In fact I wanted to use the same version of the tutorial as preview file cause the one with the white background was just the first test. And about the zaxwerks plug-in I think is a very powerfool tool but, specially for the shadings and ilumitation is important to know how to create this stuff with a 3d program.

    Working on another c4d-ae tut!

Carlos…C4D is an amazing program. My comments were not designed to say anything about the program itself. It can obviously do MUCH more than extruded text. However….you don’t seem very familiar with 3D Serpentine. Anything you did in the tutorial with the text can be done with 3D Serpentine, including shading and illumination. 3D Serpentine’s only purpose in life is to do EXACTLY what you did with the text.

I would LOVE to se more c4d/AE tuts from you. Like I said, I just got the program and I know just about nothing yet so any help is much appreciated. I haven’t done this tutorial yet but I will. Even though you can accomplish the same with with an AE plug-in, I look forward to learning the process with c4d! Thanks again!

Sorry, but Zaxwerks products are buggy and suffer from aliasing and the quality of shading and light CANNOT even begin to compare to C4D. On top of that, Zaxwerks render time is sub par and it is not capable of multiple render passes. Maybe you haven’t been working on large enough high quality broadcast monitors to notice or you just haven’t worked with C4D enough to realize the difference. It’s like comparing After Effects’ Curves to Apple Color.

I enjoy the tuts here and at CGtuts, but can the videos please be embedded using anything other that Blip? Blip playback is glitchy, and on short videos it’s basically unwatchable. I know it’s not just my computer/connection because YT and Vimeo are smooth when embedded on other sites, e.g. Five Second Projects at Greyscalegorilla.

Yeah not the best tutorial. That effect can look great when/if done well. Aisde from the fact that it is more of a CG tutorial than an AE one. No point posting simple compositing tuts on AETUTS. It should be posted on CGTUTS, but I suppose it wouldn’t hold it’s weight on there.

It is funny….My comments draw anger but the 3 comments above get nothing? Seems good ‘ole Billy is the lightning rod for negativity….even though I am HARDLY the only one commenting negatively in ANY of the post threads that I do. I know my avatar makes my comments stand out (and I like that)….but I really am waiting for someone to challenge me on what I have to say on a “factual” basis. Then we are gonna have some real fun! :)

i can assure you Billy that I attract far more wild accusations than you do. Just ask Topher. I agree with you that people love to bash the guy that is right in giving constructive critique, however, these people probably have never worked in the field otherwise they would know that critique is the design business.

Having said that, I think you kind of enjoy the ‘attention’ you get from your critique, which kidn of goes against giving critique in the first place. If you want the attention, don’t go to the effort of critique; just abuse people. It will save you much more time and give you much more attention.

        Billy November 20th

No….I don’t really enjoy the “negative” attention. LOL! I like that my comments stand out…because I believe each and every one is “true,” but I would much rather them stand out for their positives than their negatives. The funny thing is that I have never abused anyone nor do I have any desire to. I have never said a tutorial stinks for the sake of saying it stinks. I always give a reason WHY it stinks. I don’t attack the person. I might criticize the method, but not the person. Anyone who believes otherwise can go back through each and every tutorial on here and find all my comments. That being said….I dont’ really care if someone likes my comments or not. If they don’t agree with me they are more than welcome to say so…but they should at least attempt to show WHY they don’t agree with them. So far I can’t recall anyone even attempting this. All I get are the “don’t be negative” or the “you try to do better.” They are laughable.

My general complain about aetuts over the past 3 months has been its adherence to basic tutorials, which, if you look at aetuts 1st 6 months of existence was clearly not the idea.

I don’t want to criticize….really. I love being able to praise a tutorial and thank the author for the time to show a new and creative method. Part of my anger is that aetuts started out as THE PREMIER ae tutorial website out there. However, it has fallen on hard times recently. Carlos’s tutorial is not one of those poor tutorials. My comments in this thread were only to show that there was another way to duplicate this effect.

      oo billy billy,

you dont half right a lot ,

i dont mind the negative comments, well there not really negative comments, just someones opinion

But i do hate negative comments, about tuts+ and themeforest ect ect,
this site is without doubt the best place for anyone involved in design.

Without it I would be nothing more and a simple HTML TABLE designed webpage.

well then why don’t you contribute something to this site then Billy. critisizing a tutorial is one thing, crying about what this site used to be is another. this isn’t Video Copilot…. this site is only as good as the people who contribute. so instead of flapping your gums why don’t you help make this a better site. with all the critisizing you do, you must be a pretty good with AE
