In this tutorial we will take a brief look at integrating 3D physics into an After Effects project for a simple motion graphics piece. This is a beginners tutorial and pointed towards those taking there first steps in integrating 3DS Max (reactor) with After Effects.

Evan! You are one of my favorite tutorial makers and artists! Your list of free software has helped me greatly, I now have Terragen, Terragen 2, and the free version of Vue, and before I didn’t even know they existed! (I also have Daz 3D but I haven’t had time to look at it yet.)
Maybe if I have enough time I’ll watch this tutorial after school today :D.
I can’t even see that the “Red Pebble” is 3-D at all..
This doesn’t look as cool as it could… really
This looks awful, even for a beginners tutorial.
But then again the tutorial might be the best ever.
I am going to pass but thanks for the work put into it.
This is a technical demonstration for those who are completely new to 3D integration, and reactor physics. Its not an artistic training video, and it doesnt do your job for you, sorry. In case you havent noticed, in all of my tutorials from around the industry, I NEVER offer a completely finished product, and I do it on purpose.
Take Andrew for example. Probably 9 out of 10 demo reels I watch look like they could be Andrews demo reel… why is that? People rip off his stuff, and consequently the mograph industry is now flooded with a whole bunch of people that have no creativity at all. Obviously this isnt Andrews fault, but I have purposely taken a step to avoid that, by making people only learn information from my training, and not being able to take creative ideas, only technical.
Anyhow, Im interested to see some work from the critics, there is always alot of talk, and little show. Before you criticize check out my demo reel, my gallery, and compositing, pyro and fliuds work. Than we can talk. ;)
Well said. Thanx for this, integration tuts are not a dime a dozen and always useful.
Thx Pal, those douches dun really know how to appreciate sum good free useful info!
Amen to that. Well said.
Andrew is great, but too many ppl rip off his work.
Well said and agreed! Thanks man. This is a good tutorial. Reactor has always been a bit confusing to me, and this really helped.
And when it comes to 3D integration tutorials….Please sir…can I have some more?
Oliver Twist…. that made me smile
Nice way to break it off in the face! I like it man :)
Dud well said
And I am not Andrew,)
I have to agree with Eric. I am a big fan of originality and remember the old days when individuality and hard work were mandatory for even being involved in the industry at all. Its amazing at how many carbon copy effects are used over and over today. There’s only so many things you can pull off the easy way. I prefer tutorials that are jammed with lots of info because you ultimately come out more informed and ready to exapnd into something bigger. And the fact that I independently come up with something on my own later is the point we all should end up at.

Submit button messed up, thats why its there twice. =/
Well…interesting. I’m quite new into 3D programs, I’m studying them since few months but I’m able to do that process flawlessly with cinema 4D and AE, and I have to say…man, this whole thing in cinema4D is waaaay much easyer and faster! Especially with the new mograph2 physics engine. I also studied the basics of 3dstudiomax but honestly each time I try to do something I could have done into cinema 4D I find it pretty much harder to redo into 3dsmax. I feel like there’s one more step to do which is figuring out how to create the idea into 3dsmax; I don’t know if it’s just me but actually I really think that for what concerns motion graphics and basic 3D stuff cinema 4D at the moment is really “the shit”. I’m really interested to how this integration process could be done into 3Dstudiomax though so I found this tut useful. Thanks!
Their or there, hmmm ;)
I disagree with above posters, this IS an over done workflow tutorial. Maltannon, Kramer, Dickinson (etc etc etc) have covered this many times. Having said this, it never hurts when someone else rehashes a done to death idea especially when it is geared towards the beginner and not showing any design flair whatsoever.
First of all, criativity, comes with the influence and the information around us, and what we fell that motivate us. I don’t agree on people literally rip off the same idea, but can happen that you like an idea that you saw everywhere and adapt to your style, well, even you had to learn and absorve information and ideas from somewhere, and that’s ok, because that’s how we grow.
For me, the preview didn’t pass the any idea related with the title, i didn’t get your message, anyway, i’m downloading the tutorial to watch later.
I did a quick look to the tutorial, and I found interesting the explanation for 3d motion, anyway, i don’t use 3d studio max but learning cinema 4d, but ok
by the way check my portfollio, and give me an opinion i’m still in the beginning.

Some br end tag cut loose on the title.

why you are deleting the last post ? that was very intersting
crap tutorial…
crap comment…
Two words for you my friend: TECHNICAL DEMONSTRATION.
Sorry you cant download the project file, change the words, and submit it to your client tomorrow for your current project…
I refuse to do peoples job for them.
Well, mabye its simple etc. but that is why it is posted in “Basix”
And, why do you complain about something that is FREE?
with that said
Thank you, picked up some little things here and there since i just starded to learn Reactor, i’m very happy to see more 3D and AE intergration around here :D!
I am not complaining, I just categorized. I it is mandatory to always say something about everything, then I apologize but that is not my nature.
Cool tutorial. I’m trying it with a logo, but the field for Mass is grayed out in the Rigid Body Properties. Isn’t grayed out if I do it with an object like the sphere in your tutorial. Should I convert it to something?
Make what I call ‘proxy geometry’ that is relatively the same size and shape as your logo, and do the physics simulation with that (make is one primitive). Once you have the solve the way you want it, just attach the logo to the proxy geometry and it will follow the animation since reactor creates keyframes. Thats the best way to do it.
Just make sure you have the logo and proxy lined up at the starting frame so that they will match well. You may have to run through it once done and tweak some keyframes to get it just right.
PS – this works well to make the effect of a camera being dropped…
Greedy Consumer Minds might think this needs to be cool, because they need to consume cool in order to be cool. I really Needed this Tutorial, and that’s cool.
Thankyou for being Awesome, Evan.
i love it!!!!
thank you !
