  • Osvaldo_Tampico

    Looks great! I really understand the PREMIUM thing, but you know what is the bad part? That is sooooo dificult for me for example, to pay for this service!!! I live in México and I don’t have credit card or anything else! And the payment protocol is so soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo DAMN dificult in my country! X( The price is great! But if I pay here in México I’ll be paying like the triple of the cost! Is there any other reasonable way for people in other countries to get the premium account?!

    Thanks in advance!

      paypal?

    • http://www.renlish.com Ren

      You can link up paypal to a bank account, you don’t need a credit card. It’ll just take about 24 hours to go through and then you’ll be able to access everything.

      Yeah you don’t have money for premium, but how you bought AE?

    Looks real smooth, good job!

    the AE project doesn’t work !!!

      Lemme see what I can do.

    The cool thing is that this is all done with expressions, not crazy keyframing. Really good tutorial!

    I’m on the fence with this Premium shenanigans. Occasionally you really have some compelling things that I would love to pay for. But its not very often that you have premium things that would warrant this. Another part of me would love to contribute to the site to keep it going but isn’t my 15x daily attendance to the Tuts network drive enough AD impressions to pay for all of you? Come on. It would be in your best interest to make everything free and be the “main” resource source that people come to for help, tips, news, and tutorials. You could charge more for Advertising based off of your unique and register user visits. Sell scripts or custom presets or plugins. (like video copilot – which doesn’t even have ads.) Not tutorials. You want to be a community? Build one.

    • Ren

      Tuts+ has an option to just buy the premium tutorials you want. You don’t have to be stuck with an all or nothing deal. Where are they supposed to get the money to host the gazillions of files available for download? Or keep the servers running? Also, Tuts+ pay their writers for their work, which is great. $8 a month is NOT a hard ask for anyone. You want loads of how-to freebies, go to Devianart or a plethora of other free sites.

  • Sismico

    Doesn’t work to me either… it says that it was created with a 10 version (unknown)…

    :-(

    Is my premiun account worth this?

    • http://www.vimeo.com/everettoptions Adam Everett Miller

      I’ve updated the project file, but it was created with CS5, so if you don’t have it, the file won’t open.

      • http://www.vimeo.com/makemamaprod Miomike

        Maybe a *.doc with the expressions ? to CS4 user.

  • http://www.meddlemotion.com Antonio

    But the expressions are for CS4? or not …

    I get an error when writing the expressions, it would be good to include the expressions in a. Doc, .. gives error on line 5 of the expression anchor point … help please …

    • http://www.meddlemotion.com Antonio

      ok, problem solved, expressions used to CS4

      • xiaozhua

        I met the same problem as Antonio’s. Help pls! thank you!

  • http://www.mikehagan.net Mike

    Is there no way that you can save your CS5 file to be compatible with CS4? I’m pretty disappointed that I paid for this tutorial but can’t open the project file.

    • http://butlerm.com Matthew Butler
      Author

      No sorry there is no possible way to dumb down the file to a lower version.

      • http://www.xbox.com SlapDashAsh

        I love your work, but it’s a bit cheeky to create a Premium project file in CS5 only and not even offer to downgrade the project. Having to pay for a product I can’t use, and wasn’t properly informed about beforehand, isn’t right.

        It’s more the fault of the site but having a spec breakdown of what’s in the project (such as the rope_v1 report file contained in the download) available to all users will greatly help reduce frustrations such as these.

  • Fluvio

    again : I paid for this tutorial but can’t open the project file and the expression doesnt work !!!! please help me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • darren

    Hi, the final outcome looks great but were the ‘T’ in the tutorial drops gracefully down mine jumps around and vanishes completely at points. i have played arond with moving the marker and changing the settings for the frequency, amplitude and decay but it doesn’t make too much difference.

    I have attached my .aep file as I am sure a quick look through will make it easier for some one to help my as appose to me trying to explain it.

    Would really appreciate any help or advice, thanks

    This is an awesome tut,

  • Dan

    How did you learn those expressions?

  • Andrea

    Ciao, mi sono registrato in Premium per scaricare il tutorial “Drop In Your Logo With Some Bouncing Ropes – AE Premium”, ma il progetto non mi funzione con AEcs4 inoltre ero convinto che ci fosse il videotutorial.
    Fatemi sapere dove devo scaricarlo!!

    Grazie Andrea

  • Kåfhe

    Hey, awesome tutorial!!

    But how can you do it if you have two chains like in this picture, if you want them to move as the text does?
    I can’t imagine how, since it isn’t a single rope/chain holding one letter that I’m dealing with now. I need to have the chains in two different pictures, because first I want them to come from the sky bouncing downwards to take up the text outside the screen. It should bounce the text just a little to the left and right as it’s getting upraised to make it look a bit natural. Then the chains will drop the text and start bouncing across the screen so much that they’ll go away. I don’t know, to me it’s like you’d need two anchor points or something, lol.

    Thanks a lot in advance!

    Great tut. However, I’m using CS3, and I get an error when putting in the first expression. It says:
    After Effects warning: Class ‘Math’ has no property or method named ‘Pl’
    Expression disables.

    Error occurred at line 5.
    blah blah blah

    here is the expression (I can’t open the project, so I tried to just read and copy it off the video. May be I just miss read it…)

    freq = 1.0; //oscillations per second
    amplitude = -30;
    decay = 1.0;
    t = time – marker.key(1).time;
    posCos = Math.abs(Math.cos(freq*t*2*Math.Pl));
    y = amplitude*posCos/Math.exp(decay*t);
    anchorPoint – [0,y]

    In line 5, I have “…Pl));”, maybe that’s not and “l”? If you could help me out I would appreciate it.
    Thanks

    • Joel Abeyta

      Nevermind, it was PI (capitol i)

  • Stephen

    Hoping someone can help…..im following along with this tut but instead of using text im using .png images of christmas ornaments.

    however the expressions dont seem to work with the .png files.

    I tried the same express with a single letter of text to see if it worked and it did so it must be something with using an image.

    how can i get the same effect using an image file in place of text,

    thanks

  • Stephen

    OK Matthew graciously helped me and so I thought I would share this info incase someone else was having trouble getting images to work with this instead of text.

    I have CS5 (FYI)

    For me, every time I inserted (or tried) to insert an image i was getting an error message additionally when I applied the expression to the image I was also getting some wierd error messages.

    So this is what I (maybe not you but ..I ) had to do to get it to work…

    =========

    I had to create a working example with a single letter of text following the tutorial.

    In this case I called it ‘Working Text MAIN’ Comp

    Now to get an image to work…..

    1. Duplicate (Ctrl+D) the ‘Working Text MAIN’ by selecting it in the [Project] Panel.

    2. Rename the duplicate to whatever…I just left mine ‘Working Text MAIN 2′

    3. Double click ‘Working Text MAIN 2′ from the [Project] panel to open it into the [Editing/workspace] panel.

    4. Select the text layer within ‘Working Text MAIN 2…and go Layer>Pre-Compose…call it what you need to..(move all attributes into the new comp)..I called main ‘IMAGE COMP 1′.

    5. ‘IMAGE COMP 1′ will now show up nested into your ‘Working Text MAIN 2′ comp

    6. double click the newly nested ‘IMAGE COMP 1′ to open it

    7. You should now be in your ‘IMAGE COMP 1′ comp….drag your image from the [Project] panel down into the ‘IMAGE COMP 1′ above the text layer

    8. select and highlight both the text layer and the image layer

    9. press A

    10. Select and highlight the image layer..then move the timeline marker over a few seconds and create a marker..Layer>Add Marker

    11. With the image layer still selected and the anchor point (press a) effect showing.. Alt+click on the stop watch to bring up the expression box for Anchor Point.

    {Copy and Paste the expression below}

    freq=1.0;//oscillation per second
    amplitude = -30;
    decay = 1.0;
    t = time – marker.key(1).time;
    posCos = Math.abs(Math.cos(freq*t*2*Math.PI));
    y = amplitude*posCos/Math.exp(decay*t);
    anchorPoint – [0,y]

    12. Scroll the timeline indicator to make sure the image bounces as it needs to.

    13. now you need to reposition the actual ‘anchor point’ of the image….select and highlight the image layer…then select the Pan Behind Tool (Y)….reduce the view size to about 33% or 25% so you can move the anchor point far enough up….and then drag your anchor point up and above the location where you want the rope/string to attach to your image.

    14. at this point you can delete the text layer from ‘IMAGE COMP 1′

    15. go back to the [Project] panel and select the duplicate (‘Working Text MAIN 2) you created and delete it from the [Project] panel…

    16 drag your ‘IMAGE COMP 1′ into you main comp that you want to rendered

    Rinse and repeat.

    =============

    hope that helps others

    Hi,
    i’ve got that problem too with the first expression. My AE 5.5 does not accept the expression in line 4:

    t = time – marker.key(1).time;

    AE says: this attribute has no Keyframe 1 (Translation from the german version)

    Can anybody help with this?

  • Dale Mustful

    Hi Matt, great tutorial. Here is a greeting card I made with your expert guidance. I wanted an excuse to use this rope bounce look. http://vimeo.com/57099127
