After Effects, my dear Watson! This tutorial uses hand drawn elements, textures, and pre-matted motion elements to recreate a look that is similar to the Sherlock Holmes credits. It gives you basics to build on. The great thing about this effect is that it is made to look organic and not 3D and effects heavy, but it still turns out looking really professional. It does not require very much expertise in free hand drawing seeing that all you have to do is trace a still image. Take this tutorial and build upon it to create something awesome.

  1. Slayer says:

    This tutorial sucks. Reasons?
    1. you can always tell the user what elements he needs, BEFORE you start working
    2. it is a tutorial so people who DON’T KNOW how to use AE watch it, so you might just zoom on to the tools you use
    3. You suck!

    • Papp says:

To those who have problem with the tutorial:
      1. As it is a video tutorial you can always stop and rewind.
      2. If you don’t even know the tools, go and do some basic training first.

  2. Steph says:

I agree with Slayer….you idea is cool but you suck as a teacher.

You go so damn fast its impossible to keep up.

You dont say what resources are needed.

The quality of the video itself is poor and hard to see.

You make assumptions about the level of knowledge of AE for the people “trying” to use this tutorial.

to Slayer and Steph. Guys actually you suck, because you cant understand anything and I think I’ll be right when I’ll say that u can just stop trying to do something in motion graphics. Why? Coz u suck!

  7. kanji says:

We all know that you’re good at this, it would be better if you would slow down a bit so that we know where to find our materials for our own sake! But over all, nice tutorial.

  8. EscuelitaCubana says:

There’s nothing to hate when it comes to learning tutorial EscuelitaCubana. I’m just saying that he shouldn’t go too fast when he’s giving out tutorial. Maybe you should try to be honest sometimes.

  13. Arteacher says:

I am an art teacher and I am having my high school students create self portraits in the Sherlock Holmes end graphics style. This tutorial has actually been very helpful and the kids GET IT. Although they are doing theirs totally by hand with various artistic techniques this was very helpful. Maybe some of the other folks don’t know anything about the art end of it? Hue, value, saturation, texture, gradation etc. I am “technologically challenged” myself but it was still a valuable tool. Thanks!
