Final Product What You'll Be Creating

Twice a month we revisit some of our reader’s favorite posts from back in the archives of Aetuts+. Today we’ll look at a Quick Tutorial I posted back in May 2009. I was playing with the good ol’ built in CC plugins and came up with a fun technique. I used CC Smear as the basis to create text that appears in as if a spirit whisped into it.

you mean I don’t get to stream it here anymore?

    :-(

  2. tamo says:

    Direct link ….

  3. Aido says:

    where is the tutorial???

  4. chintan says:

The Preview looks good, havent seen the tut yet…. but hey… thanks for the torrent upload. :D

  5. Billy says:

I don’t like the idea of having to download the tutorial. The quality is better (which is strange because the quality of the stream was fine until the change occurred), but having to download just to watch?

Great tutorial Adam. Your stuff is always good….even if you ramble on and on and on at times! :)

  6. Sal says:

    Awesome, Adam.

Thanks for showing us the possibilities.

  7. Satya Meka says:

Great! Torrents save a lot of bandwidth. But what do you mean by bigger budget for great tutorials? :P

Adam, Keep digging AE! Nice work.

    • Peewee1002 says:

They have to spend less on hosting, they can then spend more paying people to write great tutorials.

Cool – What music is used?

      • Fiya says:

Some tutorials deserve a payment of more than 150$, while some other are paid more than they are worth. I suggest AETUTS have a structured payment like Videohive, so that authors will be more interested to create content.

  8. Will says:

    torrent = bad

they’re blocked at quite a few work places and college’s

  9. David W. says:

Haven’t used any torrents in a while. I’ll have to check it out.

  10. I managed to get 500kb/s + and received the file in 3 minutes. THIS IS A GOOD WAY FORWARD.

people should all remember to seed seed seed!!!

    This is much more efficient.

Anyway, going to watch the tut now, so cheers once again AETUTS

  11. Silver says:

    Nice Horror Text Effect………….. Adam

  12. nikon says:

    use rapidshare ;P torrents sux

  13. Simon says:

Can we get an rss feed for just the torrents?

  14. Abe says:

Nikon, rapidshare is slow as hell unless you pay for it. Great Idea on the torrents. Billy don’t you know you have to download it on your browser to watch it anyways? At least now you get to keep it and not have to dig through your temp internet files to find it should you want it if your offline. This one looks good by the way, gonna check it. Thanks!!

  15. Rafi says:

ok, speed wasnt so bad after all (1,6 mb/s). now seeding for you guys.

  16. Nate the Average says:

Torrents are the best way to go IMO, but i work for corp devils that dont let me have a torrent client. Maybe a less desirable alternative (rapidshare, etc…) for those of us that are stuck?

  17. johanngrunt says:

seems that people are polarised on the issue of torrents

personally i understand the rationale for torrents, but i can’t download from torrents since i’m on a college network

also suddenly switching to torrents without prior notification seems a sort of slight to the readers.

a really nice alternative would be to upload to mediafire.com which is free and supports parallel downloads

and i wouldn’t really mind having the tuts back in direct link, or even vimeo, since vimeo i can still download the video thru clipnabber.com

thanks a lot, no comments on the tut since i can’t see it.

    • Sean Smyth says:

Vimeo would be a great alternative, no?

The quality is amazing and the original file is easily downloadable. Plus you could embed the video on the site here.

That and a .torrent file available to the public would be good.

  18. pablo says:

    access denied to torrent….

  19. MR HOLLYWOOD says:

Torrents are GREAT ….. The speed process is best when everyone using Torrent programs set there Upload & Dowloads to UNLIMITED.

CHEERS & Thanks for these Tutorials

    • johanngrunt says:

Torrents are Great IF YOU HAVE ACCESS TO THEM

      if not, you’re STUCK
and they only have a good speed for the first few weeks when it’s still hot.

let’s say i want to watch the 1st tut posted on this site, then i’m stuck aren’t i?

  20. Anton Winter says:

im getting a tracker is done error

connection error (ioexception:server returned http response code: 400

    • Lloyd says:

Thanks for the feedback, we’ll look into it.

      • Anton Winter says:

hi Lloyd, just to follow up. for some reason, vuze still gives me that error even though i can d/l from other torrents.

I tried bitlet.org and itworked like a charm with a nice fast d/l.

I must have some setting in vuze wrong….

  21. meme says:

torrents are fine. but only as long as people are seeding. after a while you won’t be able to download old tuts cause nobody seeds anymore. so i suggest to upload on some freehosters, but not rapidshare. :)

    • Lloyd says:

The torrents will always be seeded by Aetuts+ so you will always be able to access them no matter how old they are.

      • Fiya says:

@Lloyd, I would love to see more tutorials from you. I haven’t seen you doing any tutorials lately. Sorry for being off the topic.

  22. I’m another user who can’t view the torrent. But hey, the preview is nice! I’ll try to imagine the tutorial…

  23. Joe Clay says:

Ugh, I hate dealing with torrents. I guess it’s time to scratch AEtuts off of my list of sites to check. Sorry guys, it’s not worth it. I think if AK can afford the bandwidth, you guys should have no problem. You could always use Vimeo.

    Torrents are too polarizing.

    • Matt says:

Click -> Open With uTorrent (auto chosen) -> ok. Woah, but what if they’re done!? Right click -> Open Containing folder.

And yes, I’m guessing you use uTorrent or Transmission (Open in Finder).

By the way, have you paid your tutorial membership? Are the writers paid for their hard work? Is trying to save a little bandwidth a little greedy?

I’m sorry, but your reply seems entirely selfish.

As for Adam, once again a brilliant tutorial :)

    • Fiya says:

Dude, AK is friggin rich and he has a lot of products for sale. Whereas AEtuts is not monetized yet. I wish they monetize it, because it helps the site to stay afloat.

  24. vasu says:

wow gr8 tutorial n torrents rocks

  25. KevinW says:

Why do so many people hate torrents? They are very efficient and very easy to use.

I’m happy AEtuts is using torrents as streaming took forever for me. The preview is all I need to decide if I’m going to watch the tutorial, so this works well.

    Kevin

  26. Wilhire Thurman says:

I’m also on a corporate system that doesn’t allow me to install anything onto this laptop so I can’t get bittorrent or anything else for that matter. Is there any other way I can get this file without asking someone else to get it for me? I like the idea of Vimeo or Youtube or something??

Effect looks great by the way Adam.

    • illd says:

Same problem here- system is locked for torrents. As much as I got to admit that torrents can be a great timesaver, it also can let you run in some unseen problems. A double solution for DL would maybe be better…

Anyway, thank you guys for all the tutorials!

    • Lloyd says:

Can you try this web-based client: http://www.bitlet.org/ This does not require any custom software to be installed on your machine. Can you let us know if this works for you?

      • illd says:

As always, you found a solution. The DL was unbelievable quick and with no problems, all you have to have on your machine is java. Thank you Lloyd, for helping out!

  27. lol
i found this funny that they say use a torrent to save bandwidth which is true because its streaming easier but normally torrents are used to pirate software and movies lol. I just found that funny

    • Matt says:

We use Torrents a lot for Open Source developing. It helps us manage files around us without having to waste server bandwidth during the development stage.

  28. ninjtso says:

it’s to slow i can’t to download any thing

  29. woot i love torrents. Thanks!!! nice tut …really easy :P

  30. JJ says:

took me only a couple minutes to download by bittorrent.

    thanks for the tutorial

  31. freshzboy says:

    arrrggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    it’s to slow~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  32. Chris M says:

With the way Comcast treats going to torrent sites and the obviously negative publicity that torrents get, I will have to say that if AE tuts uses torrents for their tuts, then perhaps my energy is best used following AK and Creative Cow. Perhaps jumping to a host that offers unlimited bandwidth would be in order. if you would like you can speak with my host ( thinkhost), they offer a great package for unlimited everything including bandwidth. Sorry guys…are you planning on going with this model as well for all of the Tuts+ sites? I sure hope not, I really dig your ( and everyone here) work.

  33. Freddy G says:

I like the idea of torrents, but maybe still post the requirements for the tutorial example: Trapcode plugins.

Also do you guys have seedboxs?

  34. Joe says:

I’m with Joe Clay. I won’t be downloading if I have to go this route. Torrents are a terrible idea.

  35. Fer says:

    Great tutorial man!
Hate this Torrent´s issue. I prefer Vimeo or a hosting like Rapidshare o Megaupload instead.

  36. Mr Plop says:

Ya I dont about torrents. They sem neat but are full of virusis and last i did found video of mom nakid with a asia man.

  37. Art says:

Sweet, switching to torrents is a nice idea. But I to recomend you keep some form of online streaming, so those who can’t use torrents then can watch it online. Just use vimeo or something. I’ll seed for a few days.

  38. AngryAnon says:

“Ugh, I hate dealing with torrents. I guess it’s time to scratch AEtuts off of my list of sites to check. Sorry guys, it’s not worth it. I think if AK can afford the bandwidth, you guys should have no problem”

WTF. VC sells products. This is a free tutorial site.

Whaa I dont like torrents. It took just over 30 sec to download a 90Mb file. I wish I got to watch tutorials at work. I watch for fun at home. Hopefully if your paid to use after effects you dont need to watch the tutorials side by side with your work. Flash are better but this works too.

  39. Matt says:

Took 33 seconds to download. Unless you’re on Comcast, there’s really no excuse.

  40. kiseok says:

    very nice

  41. Art says:

I just thought of something, and sorry if someone has brought up this point, but what about a few months from now when everyone’s done seeding? Some people won’t be able to see this because it has no one to seed. So there needs to be an alternate download method for the future viewers.

  42. Loay says:

loved the torrent idea (besides the direct link of course)
    Nice TUT ;)
    Thanks

  43. med ali says:

    nice work
    thank you

  44. lawrence77 says:

    wow! torrents thanks man..
It easy for me and also for all… ;)

  45. Matt says:

I do not like torrents at all as it exposes my computer to viruses and other junk. I guess I will have to just stick to Creative Cow and Video Copilot.

    • Lloyd says:

We are only experimenting with torrents at the moment so please bear with us until we have a solution that works for everyone.

      • abhay sharma says:

        Hey Lloyd
i just want to tell you that I frankly don’t prefer torrents and rapidshare links or megaupload or stuff like that because this is tools of pirates. piracy and piracy .. I hate that. have you ever heard about gfxworld.ws. check that site. they are pirates. you may find your videohive products free to download to everyone. rapidshare links. who will stop them! theres isn’t any way?
well there is one suggestion form me. Use Small size Flash Tutorials like 1024×768
just take example of videocopilot. it’s very easy there just go and click and start learning. no hd tutorial there.
We love to know the technique not the cristal clear tutorial . 1024×768 is fine.

      • Satya Meka says:

        Hey Abhay,
It’s disappointing that a lot of people misuse torrents. But please realize that it saves a lot of band width and its a powerful technology to share huge files.

      • Matt says:

Criminals use knives all the time, therefore, I won’t use one to cut my food.

Give it a rest, will ya? It’s a technology, something that is supposed to make something else easier. Now, downloading torrents is no different from directly downloading to the end user, but it saves the hosts several gigabytes of bandwidth. You get your movie with little effort, and the bills of the creators and distributors stay low. Various Linux distributions use Torrents as an advertised means of distribution for a reason: The files are incredibly large, and carrying a direct download for each of them would create a burden in many different ways.

Association Fallacy is the killer of many new wonders. I’ll give an example of what I mean:
Hitler was a vegetarian. Hitler was pure evil. Therefore, vegetarians have evil ideals.
        Is equivocal to:
Torrents are used by Pirates. Pirates steal software. Therefore, people who download torrents pirate software.

It is collective guilt, and spreading information like this is hurting many other people.

  46. Diego SA says:

Whispy but it needs to have a blur applied to it and needs to duplicate the effect speed. Faster gonna be better!
But it’s excelent! It should be great for movie intros!

  47. abhay sharma says:

    Fantastic tutorial!

  48. Rev65 says:

Thanks, Adam! I always appreciate dusting off old plug-ins and finding new uses. You’ve created a very specific look with this one! Cheers!

  49. Salman says:

this torrent thing is really good…..
I wish it was implemented on previous tutorials as well.
