Create Whispy Spirit-like Text

Final Product What You'll Be Creating

Twice a month we revisit some of our reader’s favorite posts from back in the archives of Aetuts+. Today we’ll look at a Quick Tutorial I posted back in May 2009. I was playing with the good ol’ built in CC plugins and came up with a fun technique. I used CC Smear as the basis to create text that appears in as if a spirit whisped into it.

Hey I’m getting messed up when I go to animate it out for the LAST one. My mask is covering up my first one ((I think)) your the expert can you tell me what I’m doing or what I can do?

Yeah, when you apply the effect that causes it to suck out in the end, the effect is applied to the whole video, even the stuff that you don’t want sucked out, so you’ll have to do a mask grow in one key frame sorta deal… where you just have the mask off to the side until you actually want it, then pull it on withing one keyframe… or just duplicate the layer with one masked and the other not, just to make sure the effect is off for everything before, and then on when you want it to be… this might not be what you’re looking for, but the question was a little vague… could you upload an example of the problem?

i love this site. you could put the tutorials in braille and id still figure out how to “See” them.

  5. The mentality that says “I dont like torrents or rapidshare or megaupload, etc. because pirates use those too” doesnt make much sense. Pirates use the internet, we do too. Pirates use computers, we do too. In fact, alot of you guys use Mac computers, did you know a hacker was one of the founders of Apple?

Anyhow, I think it is a good idea if it works. Torrents can be fast, and the only way they open you up to a virus is if the person sharing the file gives you the virus. I highly doubt that AEtuts is going to give anyone a virus.

Anyway, stay encouraged Lloyd and the Tuts+ network.

PS – I best some software pirates learn to use their pirated software by watching Andrews and Creative Cow’s tutorials, better not watch them anymore or you may be an eccessory. (that was a joke obviously, both are great).

Hey I’m fairly new to After Effects and following this tutorial strange things were happening and I’m sure it must be a setting or something.

I did like you did, using a logo for my film production team but when using the smear and masks i got lots of random artefacts jumping around the screen at different points, even though i followed your every word. I even tried it as a vector and turned on Continuous Rasterize to no avail. It’s really strange.

Thanks for a great tutorial, just wish i could get it to work. Any ideas?

  15. Diogo says:

    Where is the torrent file?
When I click to download the torrent ou “save as” it saves the .mp4 file.

  16. Ybiti says:

Could someone help me to understand why I’m having this distortions on my final piece??

    thanks

That’s really strange… first off, I’d pick a smaller font…. as for the side ways glitching, I don’t really know, that’s strange… if you’d like to send me the project file I can take a look at it. ae@tutsplus.com

      • Sixshot says:

This seems to be a bug in the CC Smear plugin with CS5, not sure about CS4. I had the exact same issues with unpredictable artifacting. As soon as you turn off CC smear artifacting goes away. Seems like just having the plugin active on the comp causes the wierd problems.

  17. Hykar says:

You remove all attribute to apply mesh wrap. How do you do that ? Need to use a shortcut ? or a special click ?

  18. Felice says:

I too am getting weird artifacting jumping out of the mask. It seems to be the ccsmear. Don’t know why?
