Once in a while a new (or in this case very rarely used) technique appears on the scene and suddenly you start seeing it everywhere. Well we have a feeling that this is going to be one of those. In this tutorial Satya shows us how to use the built-in radio waves plugin to create an incredibly beautiful and ethereal animation of morphing letters.

Yes.
jamie May 19th
yes you are!
joe! May 30th
I actually prefer written tutorials too. They seem to be a lot more focused on the subject and faster and easier to absorb than video. But I must say that Video tuts add a lot of personality and are more entertaining.

I have the latest flash. but it now works.. Have they changed it? As its now the H264 version?
As this works nice.
Nice Effect….
Derek Herman March 19th
Yes, it’s been fixed to the best it can be for as many browsers as it can can possibly support. LOL.
It’s really difficult to support all the browsers and there seem to be small bugs but if you don’t see the movie just refresh the page. Hopefully it’s working now for everyone, I tried to make it that way but adopting a new video delivery system is always a struggle, especially if you are hosting it on your own servers.
ryaguy March 18th
looks good
( )Me March 18th
Transitions way too long, not snappy at all and gets a bit tedious. Nice effect though, just poorly executed.

Bad-mannerd languaje, at all inappropriate and a bit harsh. Nice critic though, just poorly executed.

Nice effect, i can not wait to finish.
( )bogiesan March 18th
I love what you’ve done. I’ve used Radio Waves for years to do the conventional silly stuff and now I have an elegantly delightful reason to use it much more often.
Your movie, though, It’s w-a-a-y too big. Took me two hours to download it on a corporate T1+ in the States.
( )rho March 18th
Hmm – problems loading the video – but when I entered the page earlier it was fine ?

( )Jim March 18th
Seems like a nice tut, but all I get is audio. Just upgraded my flash and it still didn’t work, I luv this site becoz of the quality of tuts you provide but this new player might have a bug and that will be a shame. Hopefully you will get it fixed soon, keep up the good work.

Dirk Worring-Ramstoeck March 18th
Dear Satya (and all who seek to make tuts),
a really great, yet simple effect that will sure (I do agree with the editor) have alot of copy cats in the future. Thank you for that. But now, some professional advice for all o fyou guys, that are looking forward to do tuts:
Tuts are online training. Training is repetitive action. And usage of pro skills. Keeping this in mind, please use your skills.
a) As you guys know how to work with video, editing and FX, why (really, I mean it) not edit your tut a lil but to make it excellent. Whats up with all this time that your machine needs to render, waiting, users going out for a smoke, coming back, ah! ok now we´re going forward. Where´s the harm in cutting that out? Less time, less weight = better!
b) Being a pro trainer is way more than having a deep knowlegde about any programm or trick. It is about teaching people. Of course, we all here do it for free. For the will to share, not for the will to power. But, why not do this (and as I recommended you editing your stuff, this will save you double the time!):
Make a testdrive. Make some notes. Have a cheat sheet. This will save yourself alot of eh´s and ah´s and oh´s and hm´s. And the students.
So, I don´t wanna be rude. But it´s not only about knowledge to make a tut, but about sender and reciever as well.
Thanks to all of you who do take the time to show us all the goodness and keep it up. If I can help someone with anything I wrote here, don´t hesitate to write me a mail.
AE rocks.
( )Dirk
Satya Meka March 18th
I really appreciate your comments and suggestions. I will sure try to implement them.
( )naim alwan March 19th
great advice, scripting my tut at the moment

@Lloyd: I use Firefox 3.0.7 on Winxp and the tutorial is running nice
( )illd March 18th
Hi Satya,
you are really talented!
Great technique and creativity with a “formerly known as boring” effect
The presentation could be a little better – at least cutting out the rendertimes would have been nice.
Thank you, anway!
( )illd March 18th
I use Firefox 3.0.7 on Winxp and the tutorial is running nice

cant see the flv, h.264. Nothing is working only audio and im on IE

Lovely. I can play both versions. MAC 10.5.6
( )Thanks for the great tutorial. Delightful.
Khaled Dostzada March 18th
The H.264 worked great for me, and when compared to the FLV version it was 100 times better in terms of quality.
( )Daniel Correia March 18th
Same here.
( )Kevin March 18th
I can’t see the H.264 Version.
( )Jay March 18th
Great Video!
PS. I’m using Safari on a Mac and I can see both videos, h.264 and FLV.
@Satya: How did you render your comp so that your movie file (h.264) came out looking so clear. I have tried exporting/rendering straight out of AE but my radial ramp has banding, lots of “steps.” I’ve also rendered as Animation from AE then convert it to h.264 through QT but no luck. Can you help me?
( )Satya Meka April 17th
If you observe closely, I didn’t get the brightness gradient using the ramp! I did use the ramp for the background, but I chose two different shades of the same color and later on I increased the brightness radially from the center using the Comp light. This is my sorta way to prevent banding.
( )Jorge March 18th
asome!! Great! thx for share!
( )Mike March 19th
Great tut! Amazing result, this effect is very useful.
The movie is so slow downloading I have 1Mbit connection, with the other player can watch tutorials better, please fix this come back to the other video player :S or reduce the bitrate movie
Thanks for the Tut!
( )Modisana March 19th
I can only see teh FLV vesrsion and not the other one…
Great outcome dude…
( )Derek Herman March 19th
Should now work on IE 6 & 7 PC, FF 3 Mac & PC, Safari 3 Mac & PC. Sorry guys, transitions can sometimes cause unexpected issues.
If you are having trouble viewing in general upgrade your Flash Player and things should be working perfectly now. Go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ to get the latest version.
( )Derek Herman March 19th
If you are still having problems, please hard clear your cache and reload the page. command or ctrl + shift + r
( )Mike March 19th
Only FLV version working across all browsers.
Keep the Tuts coming!!! Cheers boys! Envato Pwns.

How about vimeo? They have a wonderful player.
( )Derek Herman March 22nd
The costs associated with vimeo are at least 2x more than hosting it with s3. It adds up fast with huge HD files.

Kenneth Paulino March 19th
NICE Effect….. Reminds me of the new watercolor effect in the Street Fighter IV intro, but more like how inks react in water. The H.264 version works fine for me, the FLV version displays, but is squished to the top of the player. It looks like either the .height or .scaleY property is not sourcing properly. Maybe the onMetaData method is having issues. Interestingly, I have sort of the same issue with my player sometimes, but the opposite!! (H.264 sometimes gets squished). The Tutorial’s scaleY is not correct either
( )Kenneth Paulino March 19th
Looks like if viewers are having troubles with the video. If you go into Fullscreen mode and esc back out to regular view the flowpaper player resizes correctly. If I remember the flowpaper API correctly, I believe that it changes the .scaleX and .scaleY properties of the video when fullscreen is triggered, so maybe the initial .scaleY is off or referencing the metaData before it is loaded (just guessing)? Thought this might help viewers with some video issues while you guys get things situated. Here’s my setup:
Firefox 3
( )Flash Player 10.0.22.87 Debugger version
Intel Mac
Gabrie March 20th
Hi… first, congratulations… this site and tutorials… are amazing… i m new here (After Effects)… but this is like Photoshop, so i havent much problems… but i have a question/problem…

( )Neci March 20th
The best AE TUT thus far !!! All vids played perfectly. H.264 is a beauty. Thanks a million.
( )dabatsun March 20th
please move your videos on vimeo for example.
( )i can’t watch this one, and for the others, more often my FF shutdown alone.
Andrew March 20th
Both play in Firefox 3, H.264 is way better quality though.
( )BRITO3D March 20th
Very very nice my friend!!!
( )Thanks for the INFO.
Clayton Light March 20th
Satya,
( )Young men like you make me fear for my livelihood in the near future!
Great work.
Brian Bonesari March 21st
Both the H.264 version and the FLV version are “scrunched” up at the top of the video screen (about 1/4 inch) the rest of the screen is black. FLV loads faster by far. And yes, I do have all the latest drivers etc which work fine at other sites.
My recommendation is stick with what was working before. Focus on keeping the user’s experience on your website easy and positive.
My background includes user interface design. A “great user experience” should be fully intuitive and not require extra hoops to be jumped through (like clearing caches etc). Inability to see the video means users will go away and not come back.
I really want to see this effect but since I cannot I am frustrated and yes, I am a first time visitor to your site. If this problem persists for long I will remove my bookmark to your site because why visit if I cant see anything.
( )Derek Herman March 22nd
Should be fixed now. Let me know if you still have that issue.
( )VertigoSFX March 21st
H.264 is just black for me…FLV player works great.
( )Dave March 21st
Is there any way to download this tutorial? For some reason it needs to buffer every few seconds.
( )CWall March 21st
Fabulous technique. It has many possibilities.
A+ for concept
The grade for presentation could improve a lot just by editing out dead time.
( )CWall March 21st
How many other possibilities are right under our feet!
The Radio Waves has been around forever, and nobody saw it’s full potential.
This reminds me to explore on my own and experiment. It’s too easy to get lazy or rely on other people’s tutorials.
Again, Congrats and thanks, Satya
( )Stanley March 22nd
Great effect! =D
(Note: I can only see the video in the FLV Version)
( )Derek Herman March 22nd
Try upgrading your flash. You can get the latest flash here: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
( )UNVI March 22nd
Marvellous tutorial
( )Derek Herman March 22nd
Hello Everyone!
There is only one bug left that I am trying to squash and it appears it might be isolated to Firefox 3 for Mac. It basically makes the first video blank. The solution so far is to refresh the page and the video will appear. I’m doing my best to get the problem fixed but Flowplayer is not responding as quickly as I would like.
Other than that, I’m almost sure it should be working for you all pretty well by now. If you are still experiencing problems please reply to this comment and leave the rest of the space for stuff pertaining to the actual tutorial. Also, leave the OS and browser you are using with your comment.
Thank you,
( )Derek

( )marcello April 3rd
great work, you openned so many possibilitys in my mind, thanks a lot
now, about the player, for me works good, in H.264 or even in FLV player, I took a few days to watch the tutorial, because i had som troubles to load the video tutorial, but i think that is a conection problem here.
thanks again and keep on

( )eric shoven April 13th
this will probably just come out as ungrateful and i don’t mean it to be bad criticism. This was a fantastic tutorial (content). It seems as you are nervous in speaking and it’s frustrating to listen to. Also, there is a lot of wasted time explaining each parameter of a plugin (leave it to us to figure that out) – just show what you’re trying to do. My biggest gripe is that you waste yours and our time with renders. Just put your resolution down to 1/2 and save both our time. It should be a part of your workflow always. Other than that, great job. Glad to see some fresh stuff. Keep it up! Remember I’m just trying to help you become better and more comfortable at this.
( )MR HOLLYWOOD April 13th
HI all …… looks like an incredable tutorial and a lot of time has gone into it. I found it a little difficult following it because of the bluriness. What recording software are you using.
CHEERS & Thanks

iv had problems with streaming, has anyone downloaded this? the file size is 464MB, is that the size on the stream server aswell? if so put a warning up for people incase theres bandwidth issues, not to mention a video stream even with hd option for this duration does not need to be so big. realy cool look though, cheers for takeing the time to make it.

Great tutorial bro!
( )Angelo April 24th
this is really amazing.. though you created it in mac I presume.. I already tried it in windows and it’s awesome.. really creative and brilliant..
maybe you want to create or add some lines after the download button telling the counterpart of the symbols from mac to windows.. just a suggestion..
anyways great tutorials..
( )Paddymacfisto April 24th
Rendered it with a little colorama and it looks great. Time remap it a bit faster and add some vector blur and you’ve got a pretty decent fire-y effect.
( )Satya Meka April 24th
Thanks for tipping me that. I will try it out.
( )JASH April 28th
I have noticed that because you can only use one mask, any forms you create can have no center, what about using text that is much longer and has breaks within it. How can we animate that?
( )b pailla May 11th
video plays for me but dammmmmmnnnnn it’s slowwwwwww…..
I could watch 5 videocopilot tutorial before this one loaded completely….
( )Johnny May 16th
H.264 player renders much faster, and in a much higher quality. If I was to choose, I’d keep the H.264 player and throw the FLV one to the trash
AMAZING tutorial
( )AMIT DUTTA May 20th
THIS TUTORIAL VERY NICE. I WISH GOD BLESS YOU.
( )Tom Howe May 28th
Great tutorial, and I’ve managed to get the cool liquid shapes working, but I’m having problems with the text – it always comes out as a smudge when I bring the wiggle slider down to 0.01 , not the nice strong edges with the whispy bits around it. Any chance of an AE project file for demonstration?
( )Satya Meka May 29th
Check my website. I have posted further information on how to do it. If you have further problems email me.
( )nan June 4th
i cann’t see it
( )why didn’t it work compleatly for me ???
it stops at 6:33 min.

hello
i’cant download it ,
( )can someone help me ?
thanks
MARK June 14th
What a waste of time. I watched 3 minutes and u hadnt even started doing it. u was just talking about it and the stuff you use, its a tutorial to show you how to do the affect we dont care about what each affect does. 35 minutes. i bet if u didnt talk about random stuff and just did it. it would take no more than 6 minutes.
( )MichaelGrab June 14th
Great effect. Great song. Loves me my gershwin.
( )Navarro Parker June 17th
Great stuff.
Just one request — could you please name your downloadable something a little more descriptive?
( )LOLZ June 18th
Dude you presenting is boring…
( )Noelle June 21st
Great Technique, thanks a ton for sharing! I really appreciate how this was done without 3rd party expensive plugins.
In the future try to practice the speech a couple times, I can tell you get nervous a bit. The smacking noise, ums and pauses were bugging the crap out of me.
( )Tiffany June 23rd
I love the end result!! I only wish some of the render time was edited out of this tutorial.
Both previews worked for me – I’m on Safari 4.0 on Mac
( )Ben June 29th

( )Wil July 3rd
This is a great tutorial, however I want to point out a few keypoints to make your tutorials better.
You’re obviously very intelligent and have good taste, but you need to improve some things so that your tutorials flow better.
1.) Turn down your resolution to Half so that your renders don’t take as long. It doesn’t matter if the quality isn’t 100% as long as we can make out what you are doing.
2.) Practice what you’re going to say, you can’t keep saying “You know…” and “Uhhmmm” and “Yeah…” you really need to work on your speaking. Sometimes it was difficult to follow along the tutorial because you wouldn’t speak clearly or finish a thought. It made you sound nervous, which made me lose confidence in you even though the tutorial was great.
3.) Practice your mouse movements and where you’re going to go, looking for the effects or solids wastes time. Several minutes of the tutorial could have been cut if you kept everything moving along smoothly.
I enjoyed how you explained what each effect control did and how it worked, this was wonderful and made the tutorial very educational. Great job, keep up the good work!
( )michael July 13th
wow, amazing usage of radio waves!! thx Satya, greetings from germany!

good tuto thanks man

muy buen tutorial!
( )jo September 5th
Hiya, thanks for a great tutorial! I am just wondering how to make this with a see through background if the text is black?
( )jo September 5th
hi, great tutorial! i am wondering how to do this in after effects with a see through background and the text black? i tried just with no solid but it just comes out with a blackground-this is not see through as it tried putting it over another video in adobe premiere and it shows as grey smoke with black background?! help would be greatly appreciated!
( )Andrei October 4th
Satya, this is truly amazing stuff you came up with there. Very nice.
( )I don’t think there is another way of producing this look in AE.
Alvin October 5th
Can u lower down ur video size for download? like video copilot.. the quality is good n almost same like yours… pls improve it, as long as we could stream the video faster without wait and wait… thanks
( )Dan Compton October 5th
i noticed you used only one mask for the radio waves and animated the mask shape.
How about using multiple masks with multiple radio waves effects and synching them up, i know it may be heavy on RAM preview, but will it work?

Satya, Your animation is really beautiful! You have a lot of patience:-) My machine seems to be quite a bit slower than yours. I’m curious to know the speed of your processor and how much RAM you have installed. Thanks for this tutorial.

Are you able to try it in safari or firefox? Thanks for helping us get to the bottom of this.

I just posted an FLV of the preview, if you were unable to see the H.264 version please let us know if you can see the FLV version.

i tried it in safari. Just play it and when the video stands still and audio goes on. just move the slider a bit and the thing will start playing again normally.
Enjoy This man is GOOD! Heads up for him…………

Hey Lloyd,
I have Flash 10,0,22,87 installed for FF and IE.
plays scrubber & sound in IEv7 but doesn’t play video itself.
H.264 Version doesn’t even appear in FFv3 – it’s just blackness.
FLV version plays fine in IEv7 and FFv3.
Great tut!!

The TUT itself plays scrubber & sound IEv7 but doesn’t play video itself. FFv3 plays the TUT fine. Again, I have Flash 10,0,22,87 installed for FF and IE.

I have the same exact Flash version and the same exact problem in FFv3. I also have IEv8 installed and that works perfectly fine with both versions.
I prefer using Firefox, like many other people, (21.73% of the recorded usage share of web browsers as of February 2009) so let’s hope this is fixable.
.FLV worked fine in both FFv3 and IEv8.

I retract what I said before. I do get the black screen in H.264 if it’s the first time I’ve loaded the page in the current session of FF, but if I refresh it loads properly. What a strange little quirk.
