Create a Surprising Billowing Cloth Reveal

Final Product What You'll Be Creating

It’s amazing how much pseudo-3D you can do in After Effects today. This tutorial will focus on using a new plugin that brings 3D bicubic deformations to layers that allows you to truly bend and twist layers in 3D space. If you are familiar with 3D packages, this is true displacement as opposed to just bump mapping.

Downloading .torrent files

We prefer torrents because they dramatically reduce bandwidth costs for us. You can use a client like BitTorrent (PC) or Transmission (Mac OS X). Seeding tutorials helps us save on bandwidth costs, which means a bigger budget left over for more great tuts!

Alternatively, if you don’t want to or can’t install a bitTorrent client on your machine you can download the torrent using bitlet.org (a web-based client) by clicking

Tutorial is coming tomorrow. If you are not already following us on twitter, please do, as we will announce when the tutorial is posted via twitter @aetuts

      • Jamie says:

        Rude reply!

      • Richard says:

But you’ll also post and announce your tutorial here, right?
Because I don’t have an account in Twitter, so I can’t follow you there.
Maybe it’s a good idea not to say “follow us on Twitter” because most of the readers/guest/viewers here think that, to be able to see or know that the tutorial is already posted you should go to Twitter…

Just my opinion…. Anyway exciting tutorial Lloyd can’t wait for it.

  3. lich says:

    nice tut..~! thx~!

  4. Modisana says:

Oh c’mon… is that how things are going to be from now on!?… cause personally I think that sucks… we are used to getting tutorials on the spot… not this torturing that you guys are doing… and it just had to be with a tutorial that looks like it kicks tons of major booty.

Anyway.. Ill say the same thing that I always say on Video Copilot…
” Aw man, that looks awesome, CANT WAIT FOR THE TUTORIAL, you are the best Andrew Kramer”…..

except that the author here is Lloyd :-D

  5. looks like it will be a great tut. I wonder if there is a plug in out there to create flowing cloth like a window curtain blown by the wind… still will wait for this tut to be released and get some insight…

The plugin that I use to create the billowing in this tutorial is DigiEffects FreeForm which can be used to create flowing cloth like a window curtain blown in the wind.

Vamos amigo, primero reune tus cosas y luego posteas lo que quieras.
    Es un suspenso absurdo.

First off….Lloyd is THE Man. I generally love his stuff. He is the Maestro of all things AE. I can only hope to one day possess 1/2 his knowledge. However….however….this effect fails in my opinion. It doesn’t look like a “billowing” cloth. The entire layer is moving. I honestly cannot see a single use for this.

And the twitter thing is strange to me. Why do I want to go to twitter….to find out what is happening here. Don’t see the point in going to twitter to find out when and if a new tutorial will be posted here. How about I just come here to find the new tutorial? Kinda the KISS principle, me thinks.

Thanks for the tutorial, Lloyd. I anxiously anticipate all your stuff. Just don’t think this one is up to your usual brilliant standards.

Agreed, upon second watching I probably should not have called it “billowing cloth” as it does feel more like paper. I even used a paper sfx, this is what happens when you choose names late at night. However, I would hope that there is some value in an effect like this. I know I’ve been expecting to be able to this in AE for a while.

      • Modisana says:

Don’t worry dude.. I’m sure a lot of people will learn an awful lot from this tutorial… I know I will… so thanks for the tutorial, the out come looks brilliant. But I sesond Billy, this whole twitter thing is really NOT the way to go… sorry

Please don’t do it again.. please….. pretty please with like a forest of cherries on top and a dash of whipped cream :-D

  9. alex says:

You can’t think of any uses for this? Seriously? Immediately I can see it being used for an Indiana Jones treasure map style opening credits sequence.

PS – Chelsea is the only team worth caring about in London.

  10. KuKo says:

Why we have to wait ? and why we have to pay for the music ?
    just my answer-opinion
    saludos

  11. Billy says:

@ Alex….I’ve watched this preview probably 30 times now trying to get a feel for what it would be used for. I don’t get an Indiana Jones/Adventure feel from it at all, besides possibly the texture color. It “feels” like a sheet of metal moving. Hard to describe, I guess. That is my problem. Generally when I see something, I can immediately think of a use for it….even if it is not something I would personally do. I can’t get a feeling from this, even after having watched it 30 times.

Just my opinion, I grant you.

And….the only thing decent about Chelsea is John Terry. ;)

  13. shark vs octopus says:

Looks great! I agree that it looks more like paper than cloth.
Also, I can see a lot of use for this one. Maybe maps, election/wanted posters
and whatever paper/cardboard stuff you can think about.
    thanks!

  15. Christian says:

Can’t wait to watch this tomorrow. Looks excellent in my opinion… and as a full time editor, I can see many uses for an effect like this. I’m consistently being asked to come up with different title graphics and another tool is always a nice thing to have.

    Thanks Lloyd.

  21. Rev65 says:

Thanks, Lloyd! This is a great look under the hood at the new DigiEffects FreeForm plug-in even if the end result is more papery than cloth. Having seen several other examples of this plug-in in use, it can produce quite convincing cloth like deformations. I do think the price tag is a bit steep for what appears at first to be a one trick pony, but with the demo version in hand I hope to discover much more! Blessings!

  22. Adam Everett Miller says:

Lloyd, dude well done! this looks incredible!

I am over these tutorials that use costly plugins. i am a broke student.
I know that the cost for the plugins is deserved but when I can’t make a final piece without the trial watermark all over something it kind of ruins it for me.
