    Great tutorial, love it!

  • paul

very fast preview, but i think you just wanted to get your point across, looks great though :D

That was a great tutorial. Thanks!

    nice tut

quick question … why not just convert text to masks or shapes instead of the auto-trace?
you don’t have to deal with imperfect tracing of the letters

  • Brett Perry

A nice look. I’m wondering why not use the stroke or write on effect instead of the beam? That’s the beauty of AE, there are so many ways to achieve the desired animation.

Great concept, Hard to follow you though. First tutorial in a long time i shut off b4 it was finished. Maybe I will give it a go later and see if it was just me at the time.

is a nice, too and the outcome is good too, nice text effect

  • Ana

    Great tut!!!!!!

  • DelphineBlue

Great idea, but when I download the file it’s empty-i have the current version of Flash. It’s easier for me to follow a downloaded file then viewing the video online

  • Ben

great tutorial, used the concept for an intro for a slideshow: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iGF5_GmSzc

      Ben, very cool!

You can convert text to vectors much easier – right click on text layer and “create outlines”.
One of your tip was a real life saver to me though – the Y key anchor point dragging. Cheers.

cant we get these tuts in text format as in psd tuts it hard to download video as they are long and also the internet limit is low

Great Tutorial. Could be a bit more specific though.

A question: if I make an intro using the knowledge in the tutorial. can I use it commercially? Do I have to credit you if so?

    Thanks /Kalle

An Answer: No, if you use this idea, it’s all yours. I just needed a dynamic way to show off some still photos and came up with this. Its just a concept that you are free to use… put your own twist on it if you like. I was just hoping that it would be a helpful idea if you ever hit a creative block.

  • Tom

    Great tip!
But just to follow up on the rights-question. Does that apply to all the tutorials in here? Can we use the end results we make commercially?

for some reason, on AE CS5, when i move the beam layer behind the picture layers, its still in front. Any idea why, is there some odd settings thing, i already restart cmd-opt PR’d the mac, same deal, made a new solid>beam>all the parameters>same thing again. weird.

    • r4ltman

ok so it was just a 3d issue, this is a very all at once tutorial, i mean its cool, but whoah, first time round, just a blur, i’m gonna do it again right now, thanks, it IS useful though

      • r4ltman

last comment another poster said, convert to shapes, for the text, this is the simplest way to do this, just use the pen til to get the points, then press v and cmd shift if need be for getting all the points you want,

      • ANA

HOW YOU SOLVE IT??.. I HAVE THE SAME ERROR! BUT I´M IN AE CS4!!..
AND WHAT KIND OF CAMERA DID YOU USE??… ONLU CAMERA O NULL OBJECT?

  • Veli

    Cool Tutorial! Thanks!

  • frank

great toot. i would love to see this more in depth. i’ve been trying to figure out how to do a very similar effect, so you have helped alot!. thanks again!

  • Brent

    Great quick tut!

  • aurorasogna

probably it’s a stupid question but looking at the preview i’m asking how you do the effect in the letter D of the word Study ( also the letters have the same effect).

I don’t understand how it’s possible to do this with mask. It’slike the stroke effect used to reveal a word but i don’t understand if it’s right or there is another way to do that and also i don’t understand how to mix with this autotrace tecnique.

    thanks Claudia

If you select the letter, you can actually go up to “Layer” and at the bottom, convert text to mask, then with the layer selected, hit “M” to bring up the mask path, click the stop watch, then move down the timeline and you can move the individual points in the mask to animate it’s growth, does that answer your question? I’m probably going to be releasing a set of preanimated letters on Videohive.net soon….

  • aurorasogna

ok yes i know this but when i try to animate the mask myself ther’s something i mistake because the resault it’s not so good.. thanks for the answer Adam!!

  • dave

Great animation. Your tutorial seemed too quick though. You showed me the basic understanding of how you did it but kind of rushed through it. Be more confident when you give a tut, man- don’t question why you are giving it in the middle of the lesson. If it’s below our skill level we’ll decide and turn it off.

  • Mike

Great Tutorial. Very useful technique. One thing I was curious about was in the preview your depth of field technique was amazing and the tut didn’t really go over it. Any advice on how to get good fast depth of field like that?

It was just done in camera.

  • Johny5

Awesome! Thank you so much for your tutorial Adam! I didn’t know about that…and your set of preanimated letters sounds very valuable…may i ask what your videohive profile is?

  • Dan

    Very hard to follow.
    The 1st 2.38 secs were …… not of use…
