Cinematic Opening Title Redux – Day 1

Jan 26th in Motion Graphics by Lloyd

In this 2 part tutorial we revisit the Cinematic Opening concept with an homage to all of you, our readers, by enshrining all of the comments left on the site in a "ready for Hollywood" delivery. It features a clever use of freely available scripts and expressions to create what would normally be a very complicated and time-consuming animation. The tutorial will be split into 2 days with a total of over 80 minutes of training.

In day 1 we cover cunning techniques to harness a large amount of text and quickly format and animate it in a cinematic style. This tutorial has tricks and techniques that should appeal to all users from beginners all the way to the most seasoned and advanced users of After Effects.

And best of all, it is all created by only using built it After Effects tools!

Lloyd….one other thing. These are the types of tutorials that people working in the field can put to use in their own projects. I just used your flower fireworks tutorial in a video presentation my wife is making today to a real estate company. Their logo is a leaf…and Particular did a fantastic job turning that logo into a cool firework effect. This tutorial can be adapted to….I can’t adapt a simulated sea battle into anything useful. LOL!

Thanks again….as someone else said…you are the AE KING!

    Hi there,
I seem to be having the problem of the text documents reading from right to left. All of my text comes in backwards, even though the layer names in the timeline do display the text in the proper direction.

I tried putting a camera in and rotating it 180 degrees around to the back, but the layers are not just flipped in a 3d space, they are reading in reverse. I don’t see a control in the script for text direction, so hopefully there’s some obvious explanation for this.

    Thanks,
    Kyle

Figured out my problem.. take a look at your character panel before you run this script because that’s how AE will interpret your text. I had my tracking set to -700, thus it was backwards.

@RUGRLn….you clearly don’t understand AE. Sure, the trapcode plugins accentuate your projects….and sure, HD looks great….ANYTHING looks better in HD. However there are TONS of tutorials on the internet (go to videocopilot.net for lots) that use just the built-in features of AE. You will never learn AE until you start working with AE. It sounds to me like you just want to complain rather than do…..no one is going to have a suggestion for you if you aren’t willing to start learning.

Great Tutorial. Just found out about this site.

    ******QUESTION:******

After I apply the the LayerRandomShifer and then massage my timeline to rearrange the comp layer’s, my text stops appearing after a certain point. In this case, after 8 seconds my text stops typing on. I may be missing something, though I have went through this tutorial 5 times and I still have the same issue. What may I be doing wrong? Thanks.

@Masttocks – If you want your text to keep typing for more than 8 secs then you should slow down the speed of the type on effect. This is why I added it as an option in the control layer.

Hi Loyd , love your Tut but i’ve stumbled into a problem with the expression to animate the text ,

    when i do “time*thisComp.layer(“control”).effect(“Speed”)(“Slider”)”

it works but like you said i should subtract the inpoint of the layer to make sure it works correctly, but when i do

    (time – inpoint)*thisComp.layer(“control”).effect(“Speed”)(“Slider”)

it bumps me back with the error

“After Effects warning: Class ‘global’ has no property or method named ‘inpoint’
    Expression disabled”

Does CS4 handle this differently ? How can i fix this ? thx !

I’ve tried over and over running the script with different numbers of layers created, different colors run in the script, and even double checked my text file a ton of times, but still only about 3-4 layers actually show up in my project, i’ve even zoomed out as far as possible and looked for my text lines, but just can’t find them!

I’ve run into a glitch. The text is unreadable when it pops up on the screen. It almost seems like there are two lines of text on the same layer.

    Great tutorial.

I’ve come across a slight problem relating to the KindaSorta Script. Basically i’m importing the lyrics of a song. But when i run the script it re-sorts the actual layers randomly. So the layers are in the right order in the composition (i.e. they’ve been sorted), but the source layers in the timeline have been given a new order so the end result is wrong? Any ideas?

I’m having trouble viewing. It stalls about 15 seconds in.
    Advice?
Looks beautiful though, I’d really like to watch it.

hi sir i have a problem

whan i do time*20 ok and hilight 20

    “time*thisComp.layer(”control”).effect(”Speed”)(”Slider”)”

it works but like you said i should subtract the inpoint of the layer to make sure it works correctly, but when i do

    (time – inpoint)*thisComp.layer(”control”).effect(”Speed”)(”Slider”)

it bumps me back with the error

“After Effects warning: Class ‘global’ has no property or method named
    ‘inpoint’

    Expression disabled”

plz help me and tell to my email plz

Hi, I have AE 6.5. how can i change the scripts that actually function with AE CS. So that they can function with Ae 6.5. Thanks a lot for the tutorial. Irina

Unfortunately you can’t do that as the script rely on features that were introduced in CS3. Some scripts will work in 6.5, you should give them a try.

    Hi Lloyd,

This is really a great tutorial. I was messing around with it and thought that rather than having the text continue off screen it would be nice to have them fade. I tried to do this by adding another couple of sliders in the control layer and duplicating the linear expression in opacity. Then I substituted my control names, but it didn’t work. Is my logic flawed?

    thanks – Bruce

    Hey Lloyd, great tutorial!

Quick question for you : When I import my text wrangler file some of the longer sentences that I am using get cut off. I seem to only be able to import 30 characters (spaces included). Anything over that gets cut short.

Any idea on what may be causing that since in the tutorial you use comments that are well over 30 characters long.

Thanks in advance and keep up the great work!

      Hey Lloyd,

I just realized that all the all my text was imported (not just the first 30 characters as mentioned above).

It wasn’t displayed in the actual layer but it was in the comp. AE must have a limit to the amount of characters it can display on each layer.

      Cheers,

    Lloyd,

I’m using this tutorial to create a video clip for my sister’s wedding. In this tutorial you use a reduced number of text layers.

Could you let us know how many layers you used in the “final” version?

    Thank you in advance!

You can lower the display resolution of the comp as well as turn off the camera depth of field and reduce the number of layers that are visible at one time. You can use my Zorro script to create selection groups and quickly turn them on and off.

    Lloyd,

I paid a membership to this site. I also bought some of your extensions. Could you please let me know how many “flying” text layers you used in your final comp for this piece?!? That’s all. A one-word response would be fine!

Crossing my fingers that I hear from you.
