This entry is part 10 of 33 in the series Hollywood Movie Titles

Continuing our Aetuts+ Hollywood Movie Title Series, today’s tutorial will explain how to make the “Legend of the Guardians” flying logo style. In this tutorial using Cinema 4d, we will model beveled text and animate of the logo. Then in After Effects, we’ll complete our project with clouds, a lens flare, particles, and our final composite. Enjoy! ;)

Why did you pick this, if this had nearly the fewest votes?

Looks like a good tutorial but the perspective of the light rays is off?
Shouldn’t they be coming from the sun?

Good work still, thanks for sharing :)

Wow! You could do this for a living! The title production seems flawless, with amazing attention to detail.

I do have a couple of comments as it relates to the “tutorial” aspect if you won’t be offended. The script does make a great difference in how concise and precise, and therefore how understandable, the communication is. An aspect which shouldn’t be lost on those who think it’s no big deal to just “turn on the mike and ramble.” Well done. The whole point of a “tutorial” is to teach which is several quantums different than a performance piece. Anything which detracts from the communication or learning is bad and should be avoided. This piece is a great example of how much difference that actually preparing a script, or at least an outline, makes in the overall tutorial.

That said, the speech synthesizer, in some areas required some conscious distraction on a few words. Perhaps you used it for some non-trivial reason; if not, the technique might not be quite ready for prime time, at least to an english speaking audience (which I assume is your largest). However, this also shows how quality content can overcome minor distractions like needing to translate “key” for “chi” and “frame 30″ for “30 frames” and the “negative (or minus) 125″ for “less than 125.”

The background music, on the other hand, should only very rarely be used in a tutorial where it’s the communication on a unfamiliar topic which is the intent and key. Even though what you used was probably very relevant to the movie (where it was very effective) – here it was not. For the movie, it was prepared to meticulous coincide with the actual action on screen and mold emotion accordingly; here it rarely did. First, most people almost never need any emotion when they are trying to learn something; and second, for the majority it is a highly competitive sensory input which is shown to actually impair comprehension.

One place where it can be used is to actually “distract” an audience from repetition – such as in your segment where you were coding the letters repetitively. You could have cut to a later time; but, doing it real time with appropriate background music is nice too. However, it needs to be attenuated whenever a voiceover comes in, which can make it more trouble than it’s worth; again, in a tutorial setting.

Believe me, this tutorial, and the way you did it, didn’t need ANY “enhancement” from music! Personally, you could do one of these a week and it wouldn’t be enough for me. Well done!

I am really let down by this; it is a shame to see Harry Potter get pushed aside by Gaurdians of Ga’Hoole, for not only does H.P.’s title animation look incredible, but the series has far larger of a fanbase of those who follow. Plus, with the final installment of the film series coming out in 22 days, it would be a great treat to see the series be sent off – After Effects-style! I did have several people I know vote for H.P. in your poll, so it really goes to show (and H.P.’s votes can show it, too) that our fanbase is strong.

Can someone please tell me what the name of the font used in the tutorial for me to download thanks

      Hi, Alif Felipe
As I said during the tutorial, the font is “Initials & Ornaments ITC Golden Cockerel”,
you find it in this link: http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/linotype/golden-cockerel-init-orn-itc/
Obviously, to fit on the original movie title animation, was changed thickness of the letters with the offset-path in Illustrator.

      Hi, Dorion2210
Unfortunately, these types of bevel at the moment are taboo with the tools in After Effects.
Who knows, maybe in a few years something will change? ;)

how did you manage to get the same amount of points, close to the original font in the inner path, so that it extracts correctly?

    • http://www.crrntn.com Antonio Cerri
      Author

You must start with the simple concept, if you have a path outside with 4 points, one point for each corner, the internal path must be at least 4 points, do not forget to set for both paths “set point first” to give a logical connection. Is important.
In this case, some letters have very complex paths, you must add points internally and externally to improve the result of the mesh.
