Final Product What You'll Be Creating

This entry is part 15 of 30 in the series Hollywood Movie Titles

We created a Harry Potter title tutorial 2 years ago, but in today’s tutorial we’re going to step it up a notch by emulating the style of the last movie. Using Cinema 4d, we’ll model the beveled text and do animation of the logo and lightning elements. Then in After Effects, we’ll complete our project with clouds, audio, and final compositing. Enjoy!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7yBYHsdiu8
i did it by using own methods. Anyway thanks for your tutorials. it inspired a lot too. Cheers ;)

    • gashone says:

did you creat the whole video or just the typo from 00:25?

      • M.Puvan says:

Hi gashon. I just made the title. Did you know the whole title was made by 2 companies which is industrial light and magic and another 1 (sorry that i forgot the name). Not to mention how many experts involved in each designing for the effect from beginning till the end. I am just a beginner so for my level i could only design the typo from 00:23 till the end. Anyway i will try to improve further in future :)

        Cheers.

    awesome man , thanxx a lot , cheers ;)

vector file is missing. please upload _

    • Author

As I explained in the tutorial, I created a file in Cinema 4d “HP7 – START.c4d”, with all the vector paths, and all “first set points” already set correctly. The Adobe Illustrator file is not necessary, you have everything you need into cinema 4d. Good work!

    • SHUVRA says:

to display the teacher. this file to it so I spent a lot of money. Please Help Illustrator Proje.

      • Author

The Cinema 4d file contains the same paths that I show in the Illustrator file. I repeat the Illustrator file you see in the tutorial is just to understand what you find in the file of cinema 4d. Doesn’t need the Illustrator file ! It has no utility! You can get all using the Cinema 4D file!

      • Author

I forgot, if you do not know how to get the chisel bevel for your logo, you can follow this Vector tuts tutorial

        http://vector.tutsplus.com/tutorials/text-effects/learn-to-create-a-variety-of-beveled-lettering/

      • SHUVRA says:

ai file with the extension I need. I spent the money to help me get it

      • Author

There is no file Illustator. The paths are in the Cinema 4D file.

      • SHUVRA says:

Can you send it to me? Antonio need most. This site advertising I did in school.

      • Author

As I said, there isn’t the Illustrator file, after entering the paths on Cinema 4d, I deleted it, because it’s a useless file for the tutorial.
The purpose of this tutorial is to learn techniques to create this animation, no, take files to create advertising job or other. Here you are on Aetuts, no Videohive.
All project files in the folder, allow the creation of this tutorial.
I have also indicated an excellent tutorial on Illustrator to accomplish what you need to personalize your logo or text.
Only the knowledge and commitment lead to growth.
        Good work ;)

      • SHUVRA says:

Why do not you want to understand me, Antonio. I wish I need not do no introduction here ..

I need the Illustrator file . thanks

      Hi,
as I explained in the tutorial, I created a file in Cinema 4d “HP7 – START.c4d”, with all the vector paths, and all “first set points” already set correctly. The Adobe Illustrator file is not necessary, you have everything you need into cinema 4d. Good work!

  12. Manuel says:

Hey, I cannot open the cinema 4d files, I am using windows seven, and I have Cinema 4D 11.5 HELP

  13. bar says:

hey there, your tutorial was great
i liked how the lightning effect came out, but do you know how can i make these lightnings in 3ds max?

    • Author

I started with the 3D graphics in 3ds Max many years ago, then I switched from Windows to Mac systems, since then I’ve used Cinema 4D. If I remember correctly, the procedure is similar, but I do not have the software, I am sorry not being able to help you. : (

  14. Bryan says:

Hey Antonio, great tutorial. Awesome work! I learned so many things. I have a question though. How did you make the dark clouds movie? C4D AE? The lightning effect at the beginning of it is amazing. It looks like it is more complex than the one on the letters. Thanks again!

  15. malte says:

    Hey mate. Great tutorial!

Is there a way to draw bevels using the path tool in photoshop and export it to Cinema4D?

Tried it out a couple of times but it looks all messed up in C4D. I exported first a path of the H and then drew a inner bevel and connected into one path in Cinema4D. Didn’t work.. Any advice or help?

Can’t figure out Illustrator. Really confused by that tutorial you posted to create bevels there. :/

  16. Rakkas says:

    Hey Antonio !

Everyone wants to project in Illustrator. I can add without any large loss.

    • Author

Everyone wants an Illustrator file that is useless.

    • Antonio Cerri says:
      Author

The Illustrator file was deleted because all paths are in the files of Cinema 4D.

    • Author

The paths created in Illustrator to get the bevel can’t be editable, like a font!
So, I repeat the Illustrator file not editable, is useless!
If you are unfamiliar with the use of vector drawing software, you can use a font to write your logo, convert it to paths (to get the outside part), after draw the internal paths, in every letter (to get the the inside part).

  17. Bryan says:

I think the illustrator file is wanted because it would help to understand how to create your own text that will bevel correctly. I appreciate that you don’t provide it, it allowed me to learn and understand the technique better. Antonio, can you give us any insight into how you created the DARK_CLOUDS movie?

    • Author

      Dear Bryan,
is not true. An Illustrator file does not explain a technique. Only a tutorial can explain a specific technique. This tutorial is effectively advanced/intermediate. Therefore, it presupposes basic knowledge of vector drawing.

      • Bryan says:

I completely agree with you. And this tutorial explained many techniques. I thank you for your time spent in sharing this with us. I hate to keep asking you but I am very interested in what method/s were used to create the DARK_CLOUDS movie.

  18. Author

    Dear Bryan,
I forgot. For the dark clouds, I used a mix techniques: the matte painting, compositing and other tools.
It might be interesting, to create a tutorial to explain this.

    • Bryan says:

Yes, the slow lightning flash at the beginning is VERY NICE. I love the detail in the streaks. I would love to see a tutorial on this. Keep up the great work!

    • Brian says:

      Dear Antonio,

I’m really having trouble following the bevel tutorial, I thought I created my letters correctly but when I import them into C4D I don’t get the same results I did using the c4d files you provided. I’m not sure what i’m doing wrong, aside from the vector.tut you posted is there anywhere you recommend that would give a better understanding on how you prepared the titles in this tutorial? I would really appreciate this because its very frustrating having this small (and i’m sure simple) task in illustrator holding me up from really doing anything with this tutorial aside from just following and mimicking what you do in the tutorial.

      Thanks again -

      • Author

As I said in the tutorial to improve the bevel of letters, in cinema 4d, it is very important, add more points, on paths (inside part and outside part). You also have to set the first point on the junction of each letter.
Do not give up! You’ll be able to get the result!

    • Darkow says:

Amazing the slow lightning flash! Plz create tutorial for this.

  19. Rakkas says:

Everyone wants him Antonio. Need to re-add the Illustrator file. Everyone is waiting for you. We love you.

  20. Brand says:

Dear Antonio. Rakkas is quite right. We all look forward to it. Thanks

  21. Brian says:

    Hi Antonio,

I really love this tutorial and I appreciate you so much for taking the time to post it. I was wondering what font did you use to create the Harry Potter title and also would it be possible for you to post a similar illustrator file so that I can better understand how to do the technique shown in the link you posted from vectortuts? I’m pretty good with AE and Photoshop and fair in C4D but I must admit i’m a little new in Illustrator and I find the tutorial very lacking on the illustrator portion and its a great tutorial when just copying you but I want to try my own thing using what I’ve learned from your tutorial but I’m just not really able to follow the vector tutorial very well thus far. I think it would help having the file to compare what i’m reading with actual results.

thanks much for your tutorial again

    • Author

I haven’t used a font, but I drew each letter.

    • Bryan says:

Antonio has already explained to everyone that the Illustrator file has been deleted. There are other resources on the web regarding this technique. The whole process can be achieved in cinema without even using illustrator. The most important step in this process, i have found, is to ensure that your inside and outside paths have the same amount of points and that you set a start point in relatively the same place for each path(inside, outside). If you don’t understand how to use the loft nurbs, play around with a less complex shape, such as two squares. You will rapidly increase your understanding of this technique and how to apply it to your own projects!

      • Alex says:

i don’t want the illustrator it’s more like i want to know how to “cut” a letter so when i put the outside and inside parts in loftnurb it wont go crazy…mine looks like alot of lines go thru each other…i just want to know how to cut it…so that the paths will react as wanted in c4d !!! help :) !!!

  22. Maximiliano says:

Hi antonio, maybe i didn’t understand, but, must I create the lightning presentation (pre title), with any vector program, for export to c4d? Sorry if you don’t understand me.

  23. Alexander says:

    Illustrator file sharing. buy membership.

  24. Amy says:

this is nice…i wanted to learn the diary glow effect in aftereffects from the movie Harry Potter and the Chambers of Secrets…..can anyone help me out?

  25. Brian says:

Thanks again for this tutorial…I finally figured out how to get my letters right and in my journey to find out how to do it the way i wanted I learned somethings that were unexpected…really had a lot of fun with this one and hands down my favorite of the movie title series.

  26. Amoonra says:

Antonio Cerri ! Nice Tutorials. Need Help Illustrator Proje. Thanks.

  27. Darkow says:

Hello Antonio Cerri. Could you make a tutorial for the slow flash of lightning in the beginning of the video? Simply stunning effect!

  28. Nico says:

A lots of people don’t understand what to do for Ai Part…can somebody teach us?…plz…

  29. Nico says:

Thanks again for this tutorial, I found a tut+, maybe can help everyone for AI ,
then you can understand why Antonio Cerri said you don’t need AI project.

The tutorial you mentioned is only for the fonts from the linear form.
I am preparing a new tutorial to explain the technique for irregularly shaped fonts, as Harry Potter.
      Coming soon ready.

      • Jonas says:

First of all, LOVE your tuts Antonio, learning so much from them.

Second of all, how far are you with the chisel tutorial? Dying to learn how to do them properly.

        Cheers.

  30. Abi says:

Hey, I’m very thankful for your Tutorials, but it’s a lil bit too fast… you skip so many steps… I didnt get it how you got the holes of “e,o,… etc.” empty for example…

    • Alex says:

Yes i agree…i am trying to do a “D” but can’t succeed in making right in c4d because maybe i didn’t split the letter in the right parts or something…the bevel goed totally wrong i tried cutting it in various ways but nothing…pls help antonio :)

  31. Timo says:

How do u edit the text? I want to change the title name! please help!

  32. Mac Herrera says:
