Final Product What You'll Be Creating

This entry is part 21 of 33 in the series Hollywood Movie Titles

Continuing our Aetuts+ Hollywood Movie Title Series, today’s tutorial will explain how to make the Thor flying logo. We’ll start by covering the 3D part as we model and create the logo animation in Cinema 4d. This is where we’ll see how the textures (Bump, Normal) can create interesting engraving effects. From there, we’ll proceed over into After Effects so we can stylize and composite all the elements together.

The Dark Knight Is scheduled at January :)

Nice tutorial. Going to do that in my free time. Only downside is the computer voice. I actually like human voices better.

    A text animation created in a 3d program…
Composited with some pretty standard (and primitive) techniques in AE…
Really, how many more of these “Hollywood Movie Title Series” do we need?

    Make something more creative please!

    • Strut

I agree, too much C4D, not enough AE.

It’s impossible to get the correct result in this logo using only AE.

      Hi Murat,
The Dark Knight Is scheduled at January :)

I did a Thor-like tutorial but all in After Effects, including the 3D text, a while back. You can check it out here: http://vimeo.com/20820509

I got to say though, the real 3D text from this tutorial does look good!

      Yes!
To get a good text in 3D with engraved textures need to use the 3D software.

      Hi Felipe,

In the tutorial, I talked about font used for this movie title.
However, is a commercial font “Goudy Trajan Bold” you can find it on this link:
      http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/castletype/goudy-trajan/

      Good Navigation ;)

  • Bilal

Antonio great tutorial mate! One thing though is there a tutorial on how to get the text at the beging or a tutorial that you can make reference to that uses the same technique? I’m quite new to C4D

Hi Bilal, Welcome on board ;)

You can use like a reference, the final frame title trailer,
or original wallpaper with logo from official web site.
      the choice is yours.
Since you are new with Cinema 4d.
My advice is always start with the simplest movie title.
Next, step after step increases, the degree of difficulty.

    Hi Antonio,

Nevermind the people who say they want something more “creative”, most of the time when I click back to their website, their work is very very amateur and non-professional.

I learn something new every tutorial, thank you. Don’t change.

Now, I was wondering about your textures- specifically the engravings. How did you get the normal maps?

Did you render out the normal and alpha maps yourself?

    Thanks!

Hi Bobby, thank again for your comment,

For obtain the normal map texture,
there are many interesting tools, ranging from plug-in for PSD and AE,
and there are also software’s for extract the normal map directly from a image.
The problem is: What do you run (OS) on your computer?
However, on both platforms there are excellent tools
      (commercial and open source).
You find on web search: normal map tool + OS used ;)

For final rendering, the normal map texture, is with all the other textures
to get the final result that is seen in the tutorial.
For alpha textures, just create two flat materials: white and black,
and apply them on the parts of the logo and make only this rendering, alternating:
start cap, body central, end caps, bevel, etc.

      Good Work!

        Antonio,

Great tutorial! But I have a question. When you referred to “false concentric paths” in the beginning near the 2:00 mark, how did you create them so evenly? When you stated you kept to borders around “2 units” in some areas, where are the units talking about? Are you manually moving the points? I went to “selection”, “select all” to highlight the points, but can’t figure out how to move all of the points evenly. The only other way I know how is by exporting the paths in Illustrator. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

        Thanks!

        God Bless,

        Chris

Couldn’t you do the logos with photoshop or illustrator’s 3d text at least. 4d is soooo expensive!

  • Hex

Where do i get the material to import?
