Final Product What You'll Be Creating

This entry is part 23 of 33 in the series Hollywood Movie Titles

Continuing our Aetuts+ Hollywood Movie Title Series, today’s tutorial will explain how to make the “The Dark Knight Rises” flying logo. We’ll start by covering the 3D part in Cinema 4d for the creation of the whole scene of skyscrapers in order to build and form the shape of the Batman logo. Then we’ll insert the debris falling from the skyscrapers with the dynamics modules. From there, we’ll proceed over into After Effects so we can stylize and composite all the elements together for the final reveal for this incredible animation.

I’m a fan of this site, however this looks el horrible.

    • Ramzes

Antonio gave you idea, how to make it.Now you can tweak it how you like it.

  • Drax

End result is very poor, definitely not one of the better movie title series tutorials.

  • Pablowally

I’m sorry but the first part of the video looks terrible, I would never use it for a movie.

You cannot use the tutorial to create personal works, the purpose of all of the tutorials is to show techniques and how to use the software.

I have been avoiding these movie intro tutorials for quite some time… It’s nice to see how one could recreate some of these, but not because it’s technically stunning or even visually in some cases(this one included), just because there’s a certain nostalgia about old movie titles.

Now putting that aside, what is the point of these tutorials? I mean, it’s all fine and dandy, but we have the originals to look at and the ‘how to part’ for most is actually quite simple. Generate 3D text and perhaps camera animation, take it into ae, work a little magic and… boom, you’re done.

I’m not trying to step on anyone’s toes with this comment, but this is a tutorial site, I think I speak for a lot of people when I say, I’d like to see a lot more than movie titles.

Antonio is one of the greatest teacher in Internet. A lot of technics we can learn from him.Even if outcome doesn’t looks, like original.I don’t know any other online teacher who would teach us for free, such animations.Thank you very much Antonio for what you doing for us,we are very greatful to you.

Sometimes outcome is different from original, but it’s not the end of the world. We can tweak it,just need to turn on brains sometimes, copying every step in tutorial would not make you great motion designer.

    Thank you Antonio!

I have not watched the tutorials for this particular one, and I admit compared to original it isnt the same. However, there is only so much a bit of ae and basic 3d can accomplish. That title sequence was clearly a much bigger modeling/rendering job than can be covered in 40 or even 80 minutes. Huge respect to Antonio Cerri for going out and attempting. People ask what these accomplish, and for me a big newb with AE, it shows that even the most complex looking stuff you see from hollywood doesnt require a movie house to produce, or atleast replicate. Thanks again Antonio and keep at it!

I hate to say it, but there are a few things that put me off about this series.

    1. The digitized voice. One of the reason why Andrew Kramer is such a great influence with tutorials over at Video Copilot, is his personality when teaching you. This fake, computer voice is bland, and boring to listen too. And it is one of the better versions.

    2. This is AFTER EFFECTS TUTS. Many of these movie tutorials are done almost exclusively in cinema 4d.

I do not use 3d animation programs, I am a composition editor. This is why I liked coming to this site, because I learned a phenomenal amount about the potential of the program, After Effects.

And finally, I want to thank you for putting up the tutorial. I imagine it was alot of work and regardless of my complaints above, I still applaud the effort and time to bring us a tutorial that we can learn from.

Antonio your technic is very useful and faster than old method, thanks for the tips budy ;)

  • illd

    great work – thanks bro!

  • ashcat

loads of possibility with the techniques,, thank you for the share

  • tvandang

I really liked to way you used the cloner object to distribute all those buildings along the spline, positioning camera angle, lights and ect. I do not have the building objects and therefore, I created some square objects instead. I like it a lot. Thanks a bunch!

  • Cava

Awful and ordinary. Evidently these titles require much more than simply use friendly plugins and simple techniques….

  • Kev

Not sure why people put such a “hate-on” for free tuts. I remember a time you had to always pay to go to some class at a school – drive an hour to get to – and find out the class was shit.

I guess people also want a free finshed polished piece of art.

Keep up the work Antonio – I have used your techniques for various personal projects – thanks for the knowledge.

Hey, anyway you could do a current “Doctor Who” intro?????

  • Servando

i believe a little more of radial blur and intensity would be nicer, still i really appreciate the tutorial.

  • mjt

    What are people whining about?
I find the idea of building the batman logo from skycrapers veery clever. Thank you for the inspiration and tutorial, Antonio!

Btw, is the soundtrack free to use and where is it from?

If people don’t like it, then that’s fine. I always appreciate being able to see how someone else works no matter what the outcome is. It is never NOT beneficial to see how someone else works. So what if YOU don’t like the result, its the technique that is important, and it is what YOU then do with those techniques that should be the take away and not the result of the video. Do not recreate, CREATE.

Thank you Antonio for all your tutorials, all your tips, all your techniques and all the time you put into these videos. Myself and others appreciate all you and the rest of the tutorial authors do.
