Adding Elements To Your Film Footage – AE Basix

Tutorial Details
  • Requirements: Just After Effects... enjoy!
  • Difficulty: Beginner
  • Run Time: 13 min

Final Product What You'll Be Creating

Instead of starting from scratch when making a new motion piece I like to use filmed footage and add stuff onto it. I think it’s a great and fast way of learning new tools and presets in After Effects.

In this tutorial I will go through what I added to my birdhouse footage to make it look like an ad or vignette for a tv breakfast show.

Things I have used are different kinds of filters, a dark vignette, motion tracking to the text and an animated speech bubble. The speech bubble is made out of three similar versions in Illustrator and then put together in a loop in After Effects. That gives it a more dynamic and analogue look to it.

It’s seems that the archive is damaged.

  2. IANH - BR says:

Very Basic, but i like da câmera shake.

I’m sorry to say this but come on, what is this? AETuts+ is certainly loosing quality with these kind of tutorials. I insist that the editor will take a tutorial more seriously into consideration before publishing it. What’s the whole point of this vid? Really bad :(

    • Erik says:

      “loosing”- Really?

    • Norrie says:

      You insist? Really?

Maybe you should have looked at the text that said “Difficulty: Beginner” and just not watched it if you’re so good.

Everyone, no matter how proficient, can always learn. It takes extraordinary arrogance to be that dismissive of something that someone produces FOR FREE.

If you could link me one of your free tutorials Hugo… that’d be great.

For us it is free, that’s true. But the author gets paid by envato.

The Tutorial might be useful for beginners, although I’m not sure if it’s beneficial to teach steps that are obviously unusually or even wrong. I personally never heard of 1050×576 pixels. Did you? Some steps could also be done more efficient like the offset of the different bubble parts (Keyframe-Assistant). So why not showing the most efficient way of getting the whole thing done? Even if it’s supposed to be for beginners.

So for me the tutorial is just not professional enough. Specially for a site operated by envato.

      • Ronny says:

In never versions of the adobe suite the 16:9 presets are 1050×576.
Easy to google if you want to know why.

    • Ben Stanley says:

It says “Basix” after the tutorial name for a reason. They don’t just put it there because it sounds cool…

  4. Wendy says:

    Awesome tutorial! Thanks! :)

  5. dteix says:

Thanks for this tutorial. Simple yes, but we need to have all kinds and skill levels for tutorials.

  6. Blue Monkey says:

    Great little tut!

  7. Remington McElhaney says:

Yeah, I mean the was certainly a time when I would have found this tutorial valuable. I think people need to understand this site caters to all skill levels, and I’d be willing to bet the majority are beginners. So don’t get too upset if every single FREE tutorial doesn’t cater to your needs. I’m sure there are plenty others that will :)

  8. rohit says:

Thanks for this tutorial. please re-upload the source files, the archive is damaged

  9. John says:

What’s the whole point of this video? What’s the point of Hugo’s comment? Is he a professional critic? Or is he trying to give us a hint on his superb talents? Tutorials take a lot of work. Simple or advanced there’s always someone out there that will benefit. So give a shout out for Envato and the people trying to make a couple extra bucks putting these together.

My favorite part of Hugo’s comment.

“I insist that the editor will take a tutorial more seriously into consideration before publishing it.”

Get to work editors because he insists!!!

  10. Juan Pina says:

I think this was a great tutorial. It is very simple and easy to follow. Everyone does things differently so if she choose to offset by hand she can, someone else might prefer expressions or keyframe assistant but who’s to say whats right and what’s wrong?

    • Hugo says:

Seriously, I don’t want to be one of those commenters who just says ‘this sucks’ but for example take a look at the basics category. It contains really much ‘tutorials’. Compare it to the normal tutorial section and you’ll find that anyone who wants to learn AE is already overloaded with the basic videos. Just check out Videocopilot’s basic AE tutorials and you’ll be up to date. I just want to get back to the time when tutorials like ‘Create a Breathtakingly Awesome Rain Scene ‘ were published.

yes what Hugo says is right plz take care of this ………………………

  12. Angel says:

Thanks for the Basis Tut and the effort Lina

BTW I love the way you speak, really:

    ” ctrl + c, crtl + d”

    that’s kill me…

    Thanks again.

  13. Ron Simon says:

I loved the tutorial and thought it was excellent and I learned a lot from it. You can grab something valuable from this no mater what your experience level.

  15. Sander says:

I can’t download the source files either.

  16. jakob says:

i believe this tut is more of “hey AE is fun n u can make cute vid like this n its simple”..
kinda get those who r pure newbies to kick start on bring in more elements into the composition.

rather blatantly asking “what is this?” or “what is the purpose of this vid?”, we shld encourage linda to make a better one next time.

this is a open web community, not a “post the vid and get critisized” forum..

bear in mind she’s still a student

  17. Admin says:

I can’t download the source files

  18. Joe says:

I can’t download the source files

  19. Alby says:

    source files no download

  20. Stephen says:

it’s an amazing tutorial for beginner, AS IT SAYS in the title, so Hugo, why don’t you try extra advanced tutorial instead of giving out to somebody, who actually tried to help. JAYSUS, GET A LIFE, PEOPLE!

  21. Kate says:

Many people ask questions about treatment of osteoarthritis, muscle pain. Markelov`s simulator gives an answer to these questions and many of others. Try it, you will not regret! http://www.bodytherapy-mb.com
