Final Product What You'll Be Creating
Next time you find yourself traveling through time… you can only hope the soundtrack is more like this. In this tutorial we will learn how to use Trapcode Form’s AudioReact to create a very cool scene that reacts to the music. See you on the other side!
Requirements
- Trapcode Form You can download a trial version here.

hi Robert,
One question about the use of a mp3 file, how do you make that work?
My AE cs4 always crashes when I use a mp3 file.
thx in advance!
great tut !!
don’t know. try installing some codecs. i recommend using ffdshow.
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDshow.htm
other than that i don’t know what else… hope it works…
marcel, you don’t want to use mp3 files in ae. convert your audio file to an aiff or wave file. hopefully that’ll stop your computer from crashing.
well in all actuality, you don’t want to use mp3′s in After Effects if you can help it. I would suggest throwing that mp3 into an NLE like Final Cut or Premiere and rendering it out as a WAV file.
or simply use quicktime pro, as wav or aiff
you can always use itunes also. really easy.
Hi everyone,
thanks for all the info on my question about mp3′s in AE.
I do know not to use mp3′s in AE ;)
I normally use .wav files too, was just wandering if Robert had a specific codec or some to use mp3′s in AE.
It seems though that some mp3′s work in AE, and others just don’t.
I do have ffshow and all sort of codecs for audio as well as video.
Was just surprised to see someone actually using it in a tutorial ;)
I put one in a project just now to test it, and it did work, had the little logo of a Winamp file, so that’s where the codec is probably from now.
(mp3 file from AK’s new holiday project, see VCP for download)
There also seems to be a difference between PC and Mac, I run on both AE CS4, but on the PC it seems to work from time to time, but on the Mac it’s harder.
I always tell my students not to use mp3′s in AE… no mather what.
I’ll sitck with that advise ;)
cheers everyone !
one thing i learned in my schooling is to NEVER use mp3′s in after effects. It’s not “forbidden” but its highly recommended against it due to the “popping” noise that happens once in a while as well as complications that may happen. As far as audio is concerned in AE, WAV is your best friend :)
FANTASTIC! THANKS THANKS THANKS!
its possible do that for video performances?
For live video performances?
This is not like Winamp Visualizations. You can use them in Music Videos.
Your Form preview window shows unlicensed DEMO, but it doesn’t render a red cross as a trial version would (as far as i know).
I might be wrong here but, are you doing an online tutorial with a pirated version?
Thats What I saw and I was wondering the same thing.
You DID not see that, Common man dont spoil the fun…. YARR just focus on the tutorial..
Is it possible that he downloaded the trial to play with it, made the scene, and then bought it because he enjoyed using it and it made his life easy? We all can only hope.
I think that’s a bug from either Trapcode of AE but Adam seems to have the same thing
http://ae.tutsplus.com/tutorials/motion-graphics/create-a-mysterious-smokey-logo-reveal/
Look closely it’s the same deal…
It is possible that he made it on his and then got some else to render it for him with a licensed copy.
That is not breaking any laws I wouldn’t have said.
For example a student might make something at home with a trial and then render it out at school/colledge/uni etc.
I never would have thought of that. He did say he was a young motion graphics designer, so that is totally possible.
It’s always good to see audio visualizations!
hi Everyone,
Just watched the tutorial again, I saw a bit of a bad use of fading audio:
Robert uses the audio Levels to fade the audio in and out.
In the Audio FX pull-down, there is the FX Stereo Mixer, it’s much better to use that FX, to turn down the left and right Levels form 100% to 0% and the other way around.
If you check your waveform you’ll see smoother waveform.
Nick Campbell from http://www.GreyscaleGorilla.com has a good tutorial on that.
cheers.
here is the direct link:

I’ll try to remember that. In all my projects that I’ve used some music I’ve used mp3 files and the I’ve done fades with the audio levels. If you look closely Andrew Kramer is also using the audio levels fade.
Hi Robert,
you’re right about Andrew using audio levels too.
I used to use them too, but the tutorial from Nick made a lot of sense.
I just wanted to share it with everyone ;)
nice.
whos the music by?
It’s by Celldweller. Watch the tutorial. I say where you can download it from.
Here’s the link in case you did not get it:

I want to be one of the winners!!!
hello
thanks for the great tuto, but i have a question plz, how can i synchronize my auto with text? for exemple if there is a booom in audio i want the text do that too, hope you understand what mean
thank youuu
Well that can be done in one way I can think about right now.
1.Pre-comp you text
2.Load it in your Form Comp and shut it off
3.If you had set up your AudioReact Form layer duplicate it and under Layer Maps set your text pre-comp.
Not sure if the result is what your looking for but this just came to me as I read your post.
Sorry for the late reply.
hello
tutorials were very good, thanks a lot
