Final Cut Pro: The Beginner’s Series – Day 1

Jul 29th in Basix by Gustavo Ochoa

While After Effects is all we need to create brilliant motion graphics and VFX, Final Cut Pro is where many of us take our raw work and splice and dice it into a final, polished video. Today Gustavo delivers a starter tutorial for those who are not familiar with Final Cut Pro and would like to learn how to edit and compose their After Effects footage.

In the first Day of this multi-day beginners' series he gives us a brief overview of the program's layout along with some simple functions you will use regularly in your video editing work.

I think this is great, but… I mean, don’t mean to be a little harsh, but if you shelled out the coin for FCP and a good Mac Pro, shouldn’t you already know what you’re doing? Again, I’m not trying to press anybody, and I’m VERY happy you posted this. Mostly because I don’t want to go through the LIBRARY they send you with the program.

Maybe, if this tutorial shows examples of how to combine AE+FCP together on a Project- it could be helpful [=meaning we could learn some workflow principles from it].

just cause sometimes its kinda confusing-what should u do first? edit the whole video in FCP\Premiere? and only Then import to AE for the effects? or is it the opposite? [problematic of course, since AE SUX at normal editing].

Should you really be doing effects work on shots that aren’t in the edit?

Cut your project, identify and export your VFX shots (dpx/cin/tif), comp them (I’ll assume you’re doing this in AE), render them out at your output media resolution (lets assume if you’re even asking this you’re not doing a filmout, so 2k motion jpeg A’s are probably the maximum amount of data that you need) and drop them back into FCP where we’ll assume you’re keeping the cut.

Wash, rinse, repeat. If you’re smart you’ll export your effects shots with five to ten handle frames on the head and tail (and work those in your comp) so that you have the ability to slide the shot easily if need be.

Effects work is frame accurate. You aren’t working 5 seconds, you’re working 120 frames. And you’re never working more shots than you need to be.

You should really just be editing the shots you need effects in with After Effects but if you really need to go through and edit the whole thing you can do an XML export from Final Cut which will save all the in and out points of your footage along with a bunch of other things. You can then import that into After Effects ( I THINK, I HAVE NEVER DONE THIS BUT IT SHOULD WORK ) and you can do your effects that way. Basically if you are going from program to program you should make sure to keep your footage uncompressed or compressed with a rather lossless format like Motion-JPEG or something else with high data rate.

      Hey! Sounds cool :]
well i dont have FCP, but i think in Premiere and AE CS4- you can just export a premiere project straight into AE! :D
still, there is stuff i think will be complicated to do because AE doesnt have the right editing tools Premiere has.
[for example-if i want to edit a split screen kinda video…with a few windows? maybe more than 2. so AE sounds like the right too, yes? -just take some video clips…give them masks, and Boom!
But itll be hell, to match the picture to the sound in AE! ..itll be Hell to mess around with the Video files….and i bet there are more problems…..
      that’s what i mean…

This actually won’t work, you need a plug-in called Automatic Duck to import the xml file into AE.

Yeah, this is AE tuts, but it can’t hurt to have a mix every once in a while… I mean, we had a C4D+AE tut the other day, it can’t hurt to learn a little bit more right?

I say go for it, until there is an EDITtuts+ where else are we going to get editing based tutorials?

I agree though, this should be followed with an integration tutorial though.

Too bad the VAST MAJORITY of users of After Effects do so on PC’s….NOT macs. This is just another example of what is happening to this site. It is failing miserably. It is almost laughable to see how this site is imploding. Final Cut Pro is for editing…and almost everything that can be edited in FCP can be done better in AE. If you need something edited, use Premiere. On a day we usually get AE tutorials we find a post begging for tuts…and a tutorial on how to use a program not related to what you come here to do….USE AFTER EFFECTS! Freakin’ funny stuff!

I also think its quiet cool to have a Final Cut tutorial but I understand why Billy is so pissed off by having a tutorial thats not related to AE on an AE site ( I mean you annoyed him a few days ago with the dancing Ice cram tutorial on both cg and ae tuts and you guys are doing it again with Final Cut on AE tuts) … maybe these guys are just looking to see if people will actually dig this Final Cut tutorial…. Maybe FCtuts is bubbling under, and what better place to introduce a Final Cut tutorial than right here on AEtuts… Personally I think itll be cool to have FCtuts or whatever you guys’ll call it.

So thanks for the tutorial.. Ive always wanted to learn Final Cut. :-)

first of all, i would like to remind u guys, before posting any tuts on AETUTS<<<<<<read<<<<….AETUTS=After Effects Tutorials.
everyone who posts tuts here have already been reminded that before posting any tuts here, most of the work should be done in After Effects, and by aetuts we mean motion graphics, vfx or watever. but instead of compositing for FXs suddenly we see editing. people who would come to aetuts would have the expectation that , Oh yeah! some new FX to learn, but rather they would find , Oh EDITING!!! am i reading the logo of AETUTS wrong or is my explorer showing the wrong site.
to be frank, there is nothing wrong in learning editing, BUT BUT!, its just that, it shouldnt be here on AETUTS.

and finally, if it was needed to show editing, y not in Adobe Premiere, AE and AP are amazingly integrated. but instead FCP. most people use PC, as per for my knowledge, and also according to some surveys. if there was an AP editing tut, just for an exception, i wouldnt have complained this much, but im no one to advice. sorry for the rude opinion but its the fact.Peace

there is nothing immature about commenting. there is nothing wrong in sharing ideas. the only wrong thing is that we are AE users and lovers. btu instead you get editing. its like a company is advertising their shoe products but in reality they are just selling shocks.-_-. and farmore, its FCP, not compatible in PC, what is more sad then this.

my posts are “immature” because I say something negative? Please…gimme a break. Look at ALL the comments that stating exactly what I said….the obvious….that this is NOT an after effects website (nor was the 3D one skellie posted a few days back). Those are my 2 most recently “negative” comments. They are an opinion…..one obviously shared by many. Wise up.

Satya’s tutorials are always good. The one Devin Northrup posted on Monday is great. That is my point. We need more of THOSE….and NONE of these. Final Cut Pro? Only about 25% of people who own a computer own a Mac. This tutorial is pointless for the vast majority of people who come to this site. That is my point…..one again….that is shared by many.

Here’s an idea, you don’t like it, look away. Maybe I can also make a stylish script to hide it. Whining about it won’t help, and it makes you look childish. If you have a better tutorial, post it. But please, don’t gripe. Many of you don’t even put up a contribution to the site, and that includes me. But until I can, I’m making sure this site falls under my non-block list on ABP.

Look, an FCP tut is badly needed, and I think the Tuts+ network is the best place (paid members make better tutorials) and the only fitting place is ae.tuts because it deals into the motion picture side of the art world.

yeah dude i know its a must to have knowledge about other softwares or else why would we call after effects a compositing software. i myself use many other softwares along with AE. and this year i will be joining vancouver film school to further strengthen my skills. and for sure i would love to post some tutorials here on aetuts. but, i wont dissapoint the people by tutoring too far from AE. pretty soon dude, pretty soon.

awright so you’re talking about contribution. ok, eventhough i dont post tuts, so does that mean i should stop visiting aetuts. maybe you didnt get the point of this discussion, this is about fcp tut on AE section. how could you be so comfortable about, or are you just doing that to raise your voice. i never said that this is a bad tut, it is good pretty good but this shouldnt have ended up here on AE section. you know what is real contribution, its about giving feedbacks, pointing out mistakes, pointing towards right direction. maybe i too shouldnt complain as this is a free tut, but im sure you yourself thought that why is this tut on AE section. we all love aetuts but seeing it moving towards other softwares like C4D, FCP or whaever makes us feel limited to one medium. eventhough it would be great to have sections specially for C4D, 3ds max, maya, fcp or any other section but putting it in some other section is not what i would prefer.
chill, these are advises not cursing, and thats what we call contribution.peace

thanx for the comment, buddy :]
i agree that AEtuts should stick to AE, and make sure the tutorials focus on it. Therefore, to turn this situation “Kosher”-ive suggested that they shouldve at least contain some workflow tips for integrating this FCP tut with AE in means of workflow. i dont have FCP, but i bet the principles could be taken to use with Premiere and such.

I Agree with you, but i dont think were giving a 100% constructive feedback here, but rather an offensive one. Obviously there is a problem, but just like a Football team you support- you cant “Boo” it everytime it messes up. If i was paying for this website i surely would be pissed, but im not. Therefore im giving my constructive criticism, and hoping for better days to come…
btw…that C4D “ice cream” tutorial was basically meant for CGtuts, and not AEtuts. an Amazing tutorial, but if they used it for both websites, i guess it shows there is a problem with getting content.

oh..and btw..u know its a must-to have knowledge in other softwares while using AE [photoshop, illustrator, C4D..etc]. so i welcome “integration tutorials”. i think theyre the Best! But they shouldnt overshadow AE [at least in this website].

    Grimbo July 30th

Why do people feel the need to rant so much about the fact there’s a FCP tut on an AE tuts site?
You don’t own the place, the owners/editors obviously thought it would be useful so decided to share it with us.

If there was a dedicated FCP/Motion section I think it would be great but there isn’t so I’m sure you can tolerate a slightly different tut on this site for those of us that also use FCP/Motion and are not entirely stuck with using AE

The kitchen CS4 is full of updates, some said … (lol)
truly AE is giving its best results with the help of other programs including 3D, tracking and so… so this is about wrapping the program with the arsenal we should be using (or being closed to, as far as giving these part up to other freelance can be concerned ), but editing is dedicated for editing-pros in my opinion. Premiere could be the first explained as it is in the “premium’s” Adobe package… I do not consider buying final cut … I’ve been using this program yet, and think the best integration reside in the hability to integrate the montage of Premiere into AE. I’m not a professional editor and won’t plan to be one. My task, my will and my skills are pushing me to imagery / sfx more than editing footages.
And I guess this is the quiet same thing for most of us here !
( Editing is a real job ! like motion design ! and I’d prefer this site to stay into its way)

        Cooking …
        why not !
A layered based software looks like cooking as much as a nodal one
        don’t you ?

Let’s cook some great ideas for the next tutorials then !
This site is so great !
Next tuts could combine the use of other programs based with or from the use of AE, not on an other specific job.

and you say this is the only FCP tutorial you have found, can you be more precise or did you just get internet connection. there are tons of FCP tuts on web. if you dont know you can always ask me-_-..
the whole thing about this tutorial was that its not supposed to be here, on aetuts network. thats it to it. in a way we’re trying to tell the editors to be carefull in the future so that they post the particular tutorial on designated newtwork. THE END

By tutorials I meant the “FCP fundamentals tutorial” kind. Of course there are tons of those “How to do this…” and “How to do that”, but I really like complex tuts explaining basics. And I didnt really find any of those for FCP on the net.
Correct me if there are any, pls. =)

Anyway, youre probably right, I still have my opinion though. Theres probably not enough tutorials based on editing to create EditingTuts+ and so they put it here, because many motion designers on this web will probably appreciate it, definitely more than people from cg, psd or vector tuts.

But I dont think its a subject for arguing, you will still think it shouldnt be posted here, Ill still think Its great to have it at all without giving damn where its put…and thats it.

And about that “Its free, so it can be bad” argument of yours – this FCP basics is shaping up to be a pretty good series, so I dont think its the case either.

I admit, there were some killer tutorials few months ago that just dont appear anymore.

On the other hand, after some time, everything eventually becomes a copy of something, it cant be different. Do you really think its possible to keep things original with every tut that appears here?

Question is whether you want less tutorials but original ones, or more with some things “copied” from the others. I vote for the second, because I can say that I learn useful things every time I play a tutorial on AEtuts, even the worse ones.

But its also true that people get paid for bringing their tuts here and its such a motivation that they often even consider robbing someone elses methods just to present their copy here…I just didnt really notice it here yet.

Don’t get me wrong, Im not saying that since the stuff we get here is for free then we shouldn’t complain if there’s something that bothers us about the site. All Im trying to say is that AEtuts is an awesome site and mistakes do happen. We get tons and tons of AE tuts here, and yes that should happen cause its an AE site but “Maybe they are trying to introduce another section to the tuts network for editing and what better place to that than right here on AEtuts”. and these guys have done way more good than harm.

Personally I see this as a good thing.

FREE TUTS<<<< thats the beauty of it. THIS IS AN AWESOME SITE.

        Peace

Where is Skellie to talk about my negativity today? Guess the FLOOD of other similar comments chased her off. Hmmmmm……..

At any rate….what this place NEEDS right now is a tutorial from the After Effects Maestro….Lloyd Alvarez! It’s been since April 13th….Lloyd! Come on…I know you are a busy guy….but this place needs you right now!!!

My point is not there has not or doesn’t continue to be great tutorials here. There are some fantastic ones. You’re completely right mate, but there’s one small problem.

Why would someone such as Lloyd, someone so obviously talented, spend such a long time coming up with an original idea then spending a lot of time breaking it down and posting it on AEtuts for a mere $150?

      That’s probably his hourly fee.

That’s why there’s some bad stuff on this site. The only people who want to work for that are the people who aren’t working at all.

Now, I love the tuts network, but I don’t think AEtuts would work on the same basis as say PSDtuts.

Maybe take a few less amateurish tutorials, increase the reward and see what happens then.

        I drink to that !
obviously, that doesn’t depends on us but on the investments, banks and buz angels… around the makers of this site, probably on Adobe too (don’t know about the freedom AEtuts have facing Adobe, which has already its own open shared tuts for us : licencers ), just … hopping the best is to be coming next !
Mergings presets and scenes already prepared will certainly occupy the stage even more than tutorials do by now. As the web templates did for creative web designers, which will cause lack of creativity and lack of testings, but that’s a matter of fact…. time is money …
and whatever this site deliver, it has to be after effects based, just because of its name, its watermark…
        You can’t beat it !

      2. PG

        Billy July 30th

Because he has already made quite a few…..and he’s one of the editors of this site….that’s why. Why would I be asking a guy that made a ton of tutorials early on to do more? Geezzzz…..I don’t know….because they are the best….AND BECAUSE HE HAS DONE THEM IN THE PAST!!!

      Premiere is Killer

        Mike Achertz July 31st

Premiere is a fine program…it’s native support has saved my butt a couple times and it’s integration into the whole CS4 suite is decent.

But you SHOULD look at Avid for PC’s (and of course FCP if you have a Mac). I’m not a fan of Avid, but it’s just one of those things that you should know. Most major business use either Avid, FCP, or both. And, not to brag, but I do work for a Fortune 40 company…we use both Avid and FCP. We DO NOT use Premiere currently, and even though we will be offering it, it will be considered a third-tier program.

Let me restate something: Premiere is a fine, fine program. But just understand that it is not an industry standard tool. I prefer FCP over Premiere, but that’s just my preference.

All three programs will help you get your work done, and as long as you are able to get your work done to your client or business partner on time and it’s what they want, then everyone wins. But just be knowledgeable about what’s out there.

        Premiere sucks bad

professionals use FCP or Vegas… Premiere is for home use good but not for movies or television..

      3. PG

        flora July 31st

Yes. Even though Premiere is a great program and its integration with CS4 is great, a lot of people use FCP. But that’s a choice made by serious editors and for people who just want to edit something anything will be fine.

    2. PG

      Mike August 6th

If you’re shooting video, doing some editing online, and exporting QT’s it hardly matters what you cut in. Understand that Avid (and FCP, to an extent) offers great flexibility for working with various media up to and including film.

If you aren’t managing the vast number of elements that come into play in a motion picture pipeline (and TV to an extent) and the data attached to every frame that comes along with it then Premiere serves your purposes as well as any other program — it comes with all of your basic editing tools. As does Vegas, as does Avid.

Admittedly I’ve never attempted to cut anything at a professional level in either Premiere or Vegas but I would wager that if you had the experience you could get the job done.

The fact is Avid gets it done better, faster and easier when managing vast numbers of shots in the professional world of editing.

I’ve not watched the tutorial (no point – I’m a PC) but I can understand the validity of the concept on AE.TutsPlus.
AE is an Effects program that produces videos. I think it’s fair to assume that many people use a separate video editing suite to piece numerous videos together simply for ease. It is possible to do it in AE but without the ease of organising multiple videos on a couple of layers.

What I do not understand is why a tutorial for software that is only available for Mac – the program featured should be cross-platform.

Anyone who wants to get into AE will undoubtedly come across the need for editing software and so what better place to introduce FCP to people who haven’t used it before?

I see no problem with this. It is relevant. It’s good to be aware of all relevant and related software packages even if you decide it’s not for you. Ignorance is not bliss.

AE users that are actually working professionals know that AE doesn’t stand alone. AE is called “AFTER” effects for a reason – because it’s where you take all of your footage after you’ve created it in other applications. So, AETUTS+ can easily incorporate ALL of the other tuts sites. A real After Effects user would appreciate a Photoshop tutorial, or a CG tutorial, or an Illustrator tutorial, or an NLE tutorial.

Several of you have probably pirated your copy of After Effects and love to get AE tutorials so that you can show your frat brothers how cool it is to make your ex-girlfriend’s head explode. But others here actually want to do this for a living and appreciate the time and efforts of those in the know that share their expertise with us (FOR FREE!). Having a hostile environment like this doesn’t exactly create a culture that professionals like Lloyd would want to be a part of.

P.S. Those of you that are so bitter and angry really don’t have a chance of making a living in an artistic environment, anyway, and should really consider a different career path. You can fight it, but that’s the truth. Watch, I can prove it – next time you go in to apply for an After Effects job, tell your interviewers how much you think Macs are for idiots how lame FCP is, and see how far that gets you.

This was excellent. The best quick/simple overview I’ve seen on the net. Learned more from this short piece than pouring through the Apple manuals and other internet tutorials. I really liked the simple/clean example that had great choices for file types that represent what an anxious beginner might really use. Especially the overlaid text.

Thank for taking the time to help others.
