I have described in tutorial the detail method of doing so.
Anyway, you just select star tool, click it on the screen (Comp) drag it and don't leave the click button and press left, right and up,down arrows key in the keyboard. Just experiment that, and come with the results.
I believe that after some experiments you will be able to do so.

How do you make your star tool make that shape? When I use my star tool it makes a star, and not what your shape looks like

And by the way the star mask is not necessary, you can use any mask to make your aura reacting with the camera.
This star is used to give aura close resemblance with the aura in theme wallpaper of Mac OS X Leopard.

This is confusing: But when you collapse transformation of a layer, it's most of 3d compatibilities seems to be vanish. Because now it is taking it dependancies from the original layer or comp. So Mask in this case do little help as in this case and when you experiment with that you will notice that it is not a complete 3d instead it gives illusion of 3d.
Now I'm working on a project where a pre-comp is used in final comp and when I move camera around it, it's edges cuts off and if I collapse transformation it doesn't react with the camera. still trying to find the solution and may be come with comprehensive details and explanation very soon.

I am confused as to why adding the star mask returned the layer to 3d. Will that trick work with any mask?

I don't think I have ever seen that before.
