Final Cut Pro: The Beginner’s Series, Day 2 – Basix

DiggThis

While After Effects is all we need to create brilliant motion graphics and VFX, Final Cut Pro is where many of us take our raw work and splice and dice it into a final, polished video. In this second part, Gustavo adds on to the starter tutorial created for those who are not familiar with Final Cut Pro and would like to learn how to edit and compose their After Effects footage.

In the second Day of this multi-day beginners’ series he provides some RAW footage to work with and takes us further into the basics of editing.

Mmm. I have my shinny new FCP Studio still in the box. I did not want to install it until Snow Leopard was out as I’m doing a fresh install. I’ll check back later once it’s installed. Thanks!

I was hoping that all the negative comments “Day 1″ received (by WAY more people than just me) would prevent “Day 2″ from ever showing up. But….since a lot of us PC types have Sony Vegas….instead of giving this “tutorial” the bashing it deserves….I’ll simply request Vegas tutorials. Consider it a AE-version of the Fairness Doctrine. Since statistically FAR more people have PC’s than Macs….I’ll bet that way more people here use Vegas to edit than FCP.

    Just me being pragmatic again….

    • Modisana says:

Sorry dude… I was one of the people who was looking forward to day two of this tutorial and Im glad that these guys published this tutorial regardless of the “negative comments received by WAY more people than just you”

    • I think its only Gamers who use Sony Vegas, and i dont know why. From my experience designers prefer Adobe Premiere, because of its good integration with AE, and so do I. Maybe you should consider changing app? :)

PS. Premiere has alot more in common with FCP than Vegas.

    • Obvious Reasons says:

Actually, FCP is the industry standard.

  3. Ben Morgan says:

Again, Billy – I’m guessing you’ve worked in the industry. If so, I don’t really understand where your coming from.
If you work for Channel 4, BBC, MTV, most brittish television companys, you will know that unless your an FCP user, you will not even be concidered for a job. THIS IS VERY VERY USEFULL INFORMATION above, please, even if you don’t own a MAC – take note of these tutorials, as one day, they might come in handy for you when going for industry jobs

(assuming that your not currently in the industry and are using Sony Vegas that is?!)

I think your approach this time was slightly more subtle, but still, you totally underestimate the importance of these tutorials to a lot of the youngsters on here who are interested in seeking degrees and jobs in this industry. Far more useful may I add than Sony Vegas tutorials!

    • I totally agree with you Ben!

      Thumbs up!

    • matthew says:

I do not believe Billy has ever worked in any meaningful aspect of the industry. Maybe in his hometown at a production company where people do not know much and he calls the shots.

I believe Billy is just a tutorial fanatic where in any case the tutorial doesn’t make him an amazing artist he gets pissy and starts flaming the one that made it.

These are FREE tutorials that people take time to create to help everyone and show them different techniques and different approaches to projects.

If Billy actually worked in the industry, the industry that some of us are a part of, he wouldn’t have the attitude that he does. He also probably would not be spending so much of his time on this tutorial site commenting bad things to everyone who creates these lessons for the world to see….FOR FREE.

  4. ilikemonkeys says:

Seriously what the hell was up with all the bashing on the last one? Are people really that focused of not even acknowledging that a significant amount of people use Final Cut and After Cuts? Personally these two tutorials are absolutely perfect for me because I have no idea how best to work between the two apps. I’m sure there are many others like me. If you don’t like Mac… don’t watch the tutorial! Simple as that! Don’t unnecessarily bash it because these guys put a lot of work in it.

That being said… thank you for the tutorials!

  5. Derrick van Niekerk says:

Dude, just because the tut does not teach you anything, it doesn’t mean there aren’t other people who find it useful.

    Good job on the tut!

    - Derrick

  6. Don’t stop with this tutorials, I like them!

  7. Billy says:

How many people here actually have macs and use FCP?

I’m not saying that FCP isn’t a great editing program. It is the standard of the industry……for Macs. If they had it for PC….I’d have it.

As I said, statistically only 20% of computers users own macs. That number is probably slightly higher by working professionals. But since the vast majority of people who frequent here aren’t “working” professionals, I’ll bet the numbers are pretty representative of computer owners generally speaking.

And…the the Vegas vs. Premiere question. That is NOT even a question. Vegas has more feature and is more intutitive than Premiere. I have extensive experience with both….and the comparison is not close. I would take Vegas any day.

There is no real “standard” editing program for PC’s the way FCP is the standard for the Mac. Avid used to be the standard but that has changed. And as to the “gamers” being the only ones to use it….I’d ask Morten to call Douglas Spotted Eagle and tell him that….you know….a real working professional….who uses Vegas. He has pointed out in numerous forums that Vegas is used by Nightline, CSN, the Food Channel, numerous providers to the Discovery Channel. It has been used for its audio capabilites by production teams for artists like Yes, Sheryl Crow, Shania Twain, Rod Stewart and Quiet Riot.

And…I’ll bet there are more people who frequent this site who use Vegas than there are FCP user. Combine the number who use Premiere and I’ll be we have 3-5 times the number than FCP.

hey Moron.. newsflash.. noone is forcing you to watch this. Crybaby

      • Billy says:

Hey moron…newsflash….I can comment on anything I want to. I couldn’t begin to care any less whether you like it or not. D-bag.

    • FCP Rocks says:

OK Billy, fair enough you can comment on whatever you want…. but please… have a little netiquette all right?

Platform share has nothing to do with it. You willingly clicked on a link intended for Mac users and even went to post a few negative comments to folks who actually found the tut useful. Only a “d-bag” would get off on stirring the pot in my book.

    • mike says:

Thanks! This tutorial really helped alot. billy go to sleep or take a walk. its a shame you seem to get off by posting negative comments when there are plenty people who seem to find this useful. there are plenty of tutorials for vegas and ae, STOP WHINING!!

    • matthew says:

      Billy,

FCP(as well as AVID) is the standard for the industry….period. A legitimate company doesn’t say oh well we have PC’s lets use something else, no, it’s we want to edit, were using macs.

For personal use you can use whatever the hell you want. I don’t care, no one in the industry cares, if you want to carry a crutch you can stay in that corner and play for as long as you want.

You want to work in the industry learn what’s used, or you could play on your high school machine with Vegas for the rest of your life. i.e. when I was in high school we edited on Vegas…….

      love
      your number one fan
      -Matthew

  8. David says:

Just an FYI to anyone, everyone comparing FCP to other editing programs. You are free to use any program you want for your personal use. But as a professional working as an editor for various websites and plenty of other side projects…. no FCP experience means not working.

You don’t need to own a mac to know how to use the program (although obviously it helps), but keep that in mind when you think that post production is an area you want to go into.

    • Calvinogood says:

I’m totally agree with David, everyone should be equipped with more & different editing skills. It’s turbulent times… now

  9. hugo castro says:

Final Cut and AE are very common on the industry and to work with both of them.

Everyday: For me is that work on DVD menu design:

we received the masters on betacam digital, capture on final cut, export to AE, create animated menus, export them to final cut again, and then send it to tape to make the M2v files on Digital vision Bitpack.

So I believe that this workflow is very important and keep then coming.

  10. PARKER says:

To separate the clips into their original camera cuts you can simply click the icon for all the footage you captured through FCP and go to the MARK menu and click DV START/STOP CONNECT. It will separate it into markers. VERY VERY USEFUL

  11. Ben Morgan says:

Im glad that people have responded to my comment in regards to FCP’s industry standard-ness (made up word, but im using it right now, believe it!)

Billy seems to crop up on this sight bashing stuff 99% of the time, and it becomes quite tiring over time. Yeah – freedom of speech and what have you, but this is a community for all levels of learners and professionals!

I believe (and I may well be wrong) that Billy is a youngster, who has not much, if any industry experience – and is someone who as yet, has not grasped the true power and advantages of cross platform knowledge and usability gives to you as a motion designer / animator / media mogul etc.

What I’m getting at is simply, the more open you are to learning and absorbing new information, whether it be software related or general industry trends, the more attractive you will become as an artist and individual in this industry.

Knowledge is king, and from plenty of experience – Final Cut Pro is absolutely ESSENTIAL learning. Sony Vegas is a program i have rarely and I mean RARELY come across in studios and universities alike, but that is not to say it is not a good program.

Maybe you will mature and see things differently one day, and you have to learn to listen, learn and grow as an artist. And I mean none of this in a derogatory way, I’m expressing my opinion.

This site is excellent, the people involved in this site are exceptional, and they post these things as they have great relevance to our industry, and want to simply pass that knowledge on to us in order for us to progress.

I think you will respond badly to this, and comment back sarcastically, but I genuinely don’t mean offense by this, and I listen to what you have to say, and read your comments regularly, as well as everyone else’.
