Even though you can achieve a similar looking effect with Fractal Noise, Displacement Map filters along with some effort, it is not that easy to make changes or get a realistic TV distortion effect. It’s not rocket science but somehow it looks artificial if its done with just distortion based on noise values. So I came across a wonderful Core Image filter written by Memo.tv

which produces amazing & realistic Bad TV distortion. So, not wasting any time I ported the filter with slight changes to After Effects using Effect Builder AE.

As it is a Core Image Filter, it is Mac only. A Pixel Bender port is quite possible in the future so that Windows users aren’t left behind. Here is a sample video of the distortion produced by this plugin with its default settings. It automatically gives the ‘jumping’/vertical sync effect as seen in the video.
