Andrew is back with tutorial number #96, in which you create that effect where you are going underground, like on that show Cities Of The Underground on History Channel. This uses camera mapping techniques and lots of textures to create and awesome looking camera move through the earth.

Video Copilot Tip: Mask Transition

Another tip from Andrew in the next Vlog features Sam Loya, a guy we haven’t seen in a while. In this tip, the choreography for a fight scene slips a little bit, and you can see there is no impact with the punch. Learn how to use the Clone Stamp tool in AE to fix this. Tip starts at 3:08.

This nice piece is a little rough with the keying and keyframes, but using a “raining letters” type of effect, it produces a very cool looking surreal video.

Interesting video showing what each letter can stand for in the creative process. I find it hard to believe, but no AE filters or effects are used to make this spectacular piece… now try to figure that out? No Particular? That’s preposterous!

The Raven

An illustrated version of Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven” by Michael Dibblee, doesn’t have tons of type reveals or coolness to it, but I do admire the drawn look to the text as well as the images that accompany them.

TEDxEdges Opening Titles

This is an amazing use of full 3D renders to create a coming together look of the TEDxEdges logo, as if it were on huge peice of glass that was broken into a thousand pieces.

Karoshi

In this experimental video, the artist tries to create an interesting 3D extrusion effect, using what seems to be mulitple layers, lots of lights and different colors, cool, but kind of a mindtrip.

We believe / Neue Digitale

This piece mixes very simple type with some insanely complex 3D renders like hair and fur, or particle type effects like Form effects and interesting lighting on them.

AICP Minnesota Show Reception Sponsor Reel

An absolutely breathtaking sci-fi steampunk type of visual effects peice, this heavily relies on strong integration of 3D renders and live action to make an awesome looking final piece.

Hershey’s – ‘Happiness Is…’

Definitely using the old school animation style (where it looks like frame by frame) they use drawn-looking typefaces as well as animations on the character’s shirt to create an interaction between the animation and the live action.

Lift Typography Reel 2009

Sometimes you just need an overload of inspiration, and watching a reel like Lift’s is just what you need. Check out the various spots that they have worked on just to get some ideas of how they use typography on everyday jobs.

MTV BLOOM

You don’t see what this spot is saying right away, but if you pay attention, you start to get the idea. This is a great demonstration of using growing elements to display words and phrases as well as making it look rad. Hypercolors FTW!

LOVE/HATE/EVIL

This isn’t really a typhographical piece but more of a concept of creating an object that shows multiple different views. Hard to explain, but easy to understand… just watch and be amazed.

A nice promotional video for a typeface called Neuforma. The beginning looks a little similar to Mattias Peresini’s tutorial a few months back.

I love how the text just kind of pops up like a flow chart on this, how the CG elements look so real, and just how everything overall just looks absolutely polished… and again… didn’t understand a word

Instead of harping about how to save energy, conserve the wilderness, or protect the ozone layer, I have found a few videos across the internet that might help get the word out or make it click in your brain that the Earth really is getting older. We all have to do our part to at least soften the blow, if not erase the effects completely. Enjoy these little tasty tidbits of eco-friendly mograph goodness.

I know it is hard to shoot your own green screen plates sometimes to practice on, or perhaps you don’t have a good camera to mess around with for 3D tracking, or integrating CG with live action. Well I have found a bunch of different resources from around the interwebz to help you to get some footage on your screen, so let the experiments begin.

Video Copilot’s Tutorials

Some tutorials online offer their material used within the tutorial for download, out of all those, Video Copilot stands above the rest in that respect. For almost all the tutorials on the website, you can download the source files to work along with Andrew, or just use it for your own projects.

Artbeats

Artbeats is one of the leaders in royalty-free stock footage distribution, and kind of set the standard when it comes to the similar sites littered throughout the net (some seen below). They are generous enough to give you a link to a free HD clip every month in their newsletter they send out, absolutely free for you to keep. It might not be much, but you might be able to use them as backgrounds, or use some stock footage for a title open. Stay on their mailing list for a couple years, and you will have yourself a nice little collection.

Green Layers

Green Layers is another one of those stock footage companies that likes to give away free footage to their subscribers, except Green Layers specializes in keyed out green screen footage. Similar to Crowd Control from All Bets Are Off Productions (subscribe to that newsletter too, I’m sure Aharon will be giving some clips away too soon), They have a nice little library of downloads for you to peruse and play around with in your spare time and see what the quality is like.

Umesh’s Free HD Footages

Umesh Patel started this nice little site about a year ago, and although the quality of the footage isn’t that great, it gives you a little something to challenge yourself with. Yeah, the green screen doesn’t cover the head, or the footage is a bit grainy with some motion blur in it… but its free! You can’t complain about free.

Footage Firm

Footage Firm works a little different in the “free” department than the rest of these on the list. The content is free in the fact that these guys aren’t making a dime on the work that they have put into these products, but you do have to pay $8.41 shipping and handling to get the collections. Now, if you think about it, less than ten bucks for a DVD chuck full of stock footage ain’t bad, especially if it fits into the project you are producing.

Stock Footage For Free

This is a website put out by the above company, Footage Firm, and takes selected clips from their numerous collections, and lets you download them instantly, and completely free. Most of the stuff available is motion backgrounds, but it’s probably going to save you a few hours of work if you can find a way to weasel these into a project. They provide all the details about the clip you need as well as what formats, dimensions and codecs you can download them in.

Detonation Films

These have been the go-to guys for when you need a quick little explosion, muzzle flash, smoke, or whatever. They have all the stuff you need, but they don’t have a prettier site? Hmmm, oh well, the fact that they have a ton of free explosions and whatnot is reason enough to overlook the bland design of the website and get to the pyrotechnic goodness. Scroll down a ways and you will find around 50 clips for you to add to your VFX pyro library.

Visual Effects For Directors

Hollywood Camera Work has one of the most thorough visual effects training DVDs I have ever watched, and just for all of you freebie hoarders, they have provides some matchmoving green screen plates free of charge for you to mess around with on your own, before you buy the DVD set. But take it from me… this set is well worth the money to have on hand.

Timeline GFX

These guys have a few different categories, Vector Art, Motion Graphics, and Green Screen. Vectors we really don’t care too much about in this article, but the graphics pieces are really high quality, and the green screen section has a few pre-keyed as well as “key for yourself” clips so that you can practice on.

Ribbit Films has a deal that after you sign up for their site, you have a little library of six clips that you are allowed to download for a window of 14 days after you register, after that, they’re gone. They have some pre-keyed as well as full green screen shots to practice on.

Another one of the popular stock footage sites, they also give away free stock footage elements every week or so. According to the name, everything is always HD, and they give you all the details that you need to know about the clip you are downloading, so you will be able to figure something out to do with it.

Pond 5

Another sweet stock footage site that has weekly free clips that you can download absolutely free, just by signing up for the site. If you have Toolfarm or AEFreemart in your RSS you have probably seen these free clips pop up from time to time.

Archive.org basically scans the entire internet and its files from way back in the day and lets you hunt those down and use them in your own projects. Mostly everything is in mpeg-2 format and its kind of hit or miss on what you find, but its kind of fun just to see what you can find.

Lastly we have Nature Library, which, well… specializes in nature videography. Just like AlwaysHD and Artbeats they have free clips that they offer every so often, always dealing with nature stuff, like plants, animals, fields, landscapes… that sort of thing.

Dan Ebberts

A lot of the After Effects community, or at least the noobs are scared to death of expressions. Personally, I find it hard to delve into them, probably because I failed math in college, but Dan Ebberts is the leading person to talk to about anything and everything expressions. He has been writing computer programs for 30 years, so it seems to come natural to him, and the things that seem impossible to us, can be solved in a matter of minutes with this guy. His website, Motionscript.com was down while I was writing this so I am going to direct you all to his Creative Cow profile. Visit Dan on Creative Cow

Mark’s book After Effects CS4 Visual Effects and Compositing Studio Techniques has become one of the standards on college classes for reading and study material, and really lays it all out for you to learn easily. On top of being an awesome author of one of the most popular AE books out there, Mark is also a training leader, skilled graphics and visual effects artist, working on numerous popular commercials and movies.
Brian Maffitt

Brian Maffitt is quite the legend in the AE realm, and we have probably all learned a bit from his website, Total Training where he has covered After Effects training from the very beginning. He has been around a long time, creating the huge site that is Total Training, providing an outlet for online training, and is a trainer in all kinds of different programs as well as After Effects.

Steve Holmes

Energi Design is Steve Holmes company name, but what most people know him from in the AE world is his contributions to places like Layers Magazine or the Artbeats Motion Graphics Podcast. Either way Steve has been around making tutorials and teaching everyone tons of awesome techniques and he is definitely a leading trainer in my book.

Ayato Fujii

Ayato’s work has inspired a bunch of people to create some awesome stuff, and if you have never checked out his site you are missing out. Although he doesn’t provide project files for the massive amount of tutorials he has, it really makes you learn how to make the effect on your own without cheating your way through to the end… which all of us are guilty of once in a while. Ayato lives in Tokyo, Japan where he works as a motion graphics designer.

Richard Harrington

Rich has been in the business for a while, and as you can see after you click the link below, he has quite a few entries in his ever popular podcast at Creative Cow: Photoshop for Video. Rich has co-written many books in the production scene and is a regular contributor to Pro Video Coalition.

Michael Coleman

Getting his first look at CoSA After Effects 1.0 back in 1993, Michael Coleman was instantly hooked. His love of the program eventually led him into his current position as the Product Manager for After Effects. His blog Keyframes, reports from the team, surveys, news on plugins, compatibility, and pretty much anything else you could think of.

PHP is the most widely-used language for programming on the web. Here are thirty best practices for beginners wanting to gain a firmer grasp of the fundamentals.

Editor’s Note: The “Best Practices” series has been my baby for three articles now. However, due to my focus on the CI video series, I’ve decided to hand off this next entry to Glen. Having said that, I’m not very good at keeping my mouth shut! I thought it might be fun to sporadically add a few rebuttals to his tips. I hope he doesn’t mind!

A Crash-Course in Advanced CSS3 Effects

Webkit is one of the few – if only – browser engines that really embraces advanced CSS3 effects. Unfortunately, this presents somewhat of a double-edged sword. We get to play with all of these amazing effects – such as CSS masks, reflections, transitions, animations, scaling, etc. – yet, we can’t truly implement them into our projects until more browsers provide support. With all of that said, it’s important to be on the cutting edge of what’s possible.

In today’s video tutorial, we’ll review a bunch of different neat effects that can be used in Safari 4, Chrome, and for all iPhone development

36 Audio Interfaces Under $1000

Most computers come with a sound card with line and mic inputs, and many people use these when starting out with audio recording. But if you are serious about the quality of your work, you should avoid them. They have inferior audio to digital converters, and often produce a good deal of noise. You need to choose a professional audio interface that allows you to plug in your mics and instruments, and connects to your computer through a USB, Firewire, PCI or PCMCIA interface.

Advanced Drum Editing in Kontakt

I created this tutorial to serve two purposes. First off, I feel that there is a distinct lack of proper in-depth Kontakt tutorials. This tutorial teaches you everything you need to know to get started with Kontakt 3’s amazing Group editing. Second, I find that there are plenty of threads out there where someone will ask “How do I get my drums to sound like ____?” (Usually Squarepusher). I feel that group editing is the quickest, yet most hands-on way of creating incredible, glitchy beats without relying on VST effects as a crutch (and therefore avoiding sounding like anybody who else who uses Plug-in X).

They can control just about any aspect of your DAW, but their strength is in allowing you to control the DAW while at the keyboard as opposed to being used for a mixing session after tracking is finished. Since the Axiom doesn’t come with any Logic presets, let’s take a look at how to configure all those buttons, faders and knobs from withing Logic.

AS3 101: Arrays

In this installment of AS3 101, we’ll spend the entire tutorial exploring a single type of data available to most programming languages: the Array.

Arrays are ways to keep lists of values. Arrays are useful to keep an arbitrary number of related items grouped together, and can represent complex data structures though nesting. In ActionScript, Arrays have quite a bit of flexibility and functionality, as we’ll see. After the usual abstract introduction, we’ll apply what we’ve learned (whilst also learning some more along the way) by building a rather simple puzzle game.

Using AMFPHP with AS3 and CodeIgniter

It seems that the AMFPHP project has now been laid to rest, unfortunately it never made it past the 1.9 beta version and nor did the tutorials. However, Adobe didn’t give up on it that easily and with the new Flex compilers they’ve included the AMF3 object encoding!

Good news for all you Flexers, but it’s a different story for all you AS3′ers. Flex allows you to quickly and simply build a service that will interact with your AMFPHP code, but you have to get your hands dirty with AS3. So, I’ve decided that it’s time there’s a decent set of classes out there that help Bob build a site with AS3 using the AMFPHP gateway.

And to throw some more dirt into the mix, we’ll be integrating AMFPHP with CodeIgniter so that we have a fantastic PHP framework for the backend.

Andrew Kramer

Basically everyone in the After Effects world has heard of Video Copilot. If you haven’t… well, then you are missing out. It is quite possibly the most popular After Effects training site out there. Andrew Kramer has built an amazing business and community from what the website was just 4 years or so ago, and it is growing every day. You have probably heard of Action Essentials 2 or Riot Gear before. Those are a few of VC’s many products, which help you to enhance your visual effects and motion graphics endeavors. Andrew was recently interviewed on Unlplugged, John Dickinson’s (below) skype-based talkshow. Visit Video Copilot

Host of Motinworks.com.au, Unplugged, The Business of Design, and the mastermind behind the Making It Look Great training series, John is a 14 year veteran of the AE world. He currently works at Foxtel in Australia, but also hosts online e-seminars for Adobe, along with running his multitude of shows.
Aharon Rabinowitz

You might know of Aharon from hosting the Creative Cow After Effects podcast for the longest time, but he has since moved on from that position to become marketing director for Red Giant Software. His (sorta) newly launched line of pre-keyed stock footage, Crowd Control has been a huge hit, along with his tutorials that he continues to produce. He now hosts Red Giant TV, along with developing plugins and being a regular presenter at AENY. Visit All Bets Are Off Productions

Jerzy Drozda Jr.

George, Malty, Jerzy, Jersey, Maltaannon, he has many different names, but there is only one man. Jerzy (yuhr-shah) is a phenomonal After Effects teacher, and one of the leading names in the AE world. He has a boatload of tutorials, pixel bender plugins, Custom Effects, and has been featured on different After Effects blogs as a contributor to the community. Host of Making It Look Great 5, his first training DVD, as well as a Polish Basic Training series, You can expect a lot more from Maltaannon in the next year.
Eran is another one of the Creative Cow Podcast leaders, taking over for Aharon Rabinowitz, and cohosting with Carl Larsen (below). Eran is located in Israel and his website, SternFX.com is available in English as well as Hebrew. He also has a few DVDs available from the Creative Cow Master Series, “Motion Design with After Effects”, and the newly released “A New Solid”. His dvds are mostly the full size versions of the Creative Cow Podcast, but there are usually about 2 hours worth of never before seen goodness. Carl’s business with his wife Angel, is Telescope Media Group, which specializes in every aspect of production. Along with cohosting the Podcast, Carl has proved himself quite skilled with Imagineer’s Mocha and MochaAE, with a few tutorials for their products as well.
Ahh, good ol’ Lloyd. Our former editor… what to say? Well for one thing, he is probably one of the most popular scripts developers in the After Effects world, running AEScripts.com and all that. Lloyd is an amazing VFX Supervisor as well as a compositor, art director, animator, among many other roles. Most people just look at AEScripts.com and think that’s it. Harry actually has quite a few products, being a fellow author of Making It Look Great (volume 3), as well as 2 Expressions training packs and the Complete Training for Trapcode Particular from Class on Demand. Harry has been around for a while and always stays quite busy, and participates in some amazing projects… make sure you check out his newly updated demo reel. Visit Graymachine

Ko Maruyama

Ko sometimes stays quieter than he should, but his blog NinjaCrayon is on top of everything in the motion graphics and vfx industry. Ko specializes in After Effects and Cinema 4D training, in fact you might have seen his 300+ Free After Effects Tutorials a while back. Ko also runs Mac Animation Pro (found at the previous link), and is always getting great coverage of events such as NAB and IBC. Visit Ninja Crayon

Shoaib Khan

Relatively new to the After Effects scene, Shoaib and his website, MaxAfter.com, have really managed to come up with some spectacular tutorials the last year or so. Shoaib shares his knowledge with the world by producing these killer VFX shots and complex 3D and AE scenes to really capture the attention of the viewer. Visit MaxAfter.com

Michele Yamazaki

If you know Toolfarm or AEFreemart, you know Michele Yamazaki. She is the mastermind behind the popular After Effects Freebies website, as well as one of the head honchos making Toolfarm the number one plugin reseller in the world. She contributes to the community by developing training put out by Toolfarm with industry experts such as Harry Frank, Rob Birnholz and Angie Mistretta. She also has done a fair share of speaking engagements, such as a popular one at MGFest last year. Her and Jeremy Hanke also have co-written a book called Greenscreen Made Easy, which gives you the primer and how-to on anything and everything greenscreen and keying. Visit AEFreemart Visit Greenscreen Made Easy

Nick Campbell

The Gorilla of GreyscaleGorilla.com, Nick is possibly one of my favorite on the entertainment side of the motion design industry. He is the creator of 5 Second Projects that inspire you to “Make Cool S**t” as Nick likes to put it, using a bi weekly theme. Nick also creates lots of tutorial based in Photoshop, Cinema 4D and of course After Effects, as well as hosting an online GSG Live show on Ustream every week. Nick’s How to be a Motion Designer and Get Paid got a ton of attention and really gave him the push to be the entertainer/educator he is now. Visit the Greyscale Gorilla

Chris & Trish Meyer

Chris and Trish Meyer are popular over at ProVideo Coalition, running two channels: Creating Motion Graphics & Keyframes, as well as writing the book After Effects Apprentice collaboratively together. They have been around for quite a while and are veterans in the motion graphics industry, and with their company CyberMotion, they have made quite a name for themselves. They also occasionally host lessons for Lynda.com as well. Visit CyberMotion

Todd Kopriva

Todd is basically the Einstein of how After Effects works. He wrote the manual… literally. Check out adobe.com/support/aftereffects… that’s all him. His Adobe blog, The After Effects Region of Interest reports on some of the news from within Adobe itself, as well as interesting stuff such as the After Effects 1.1 demo reel or some sweet tutorials worth mentioning from around the web. Visit The After Effects Region of Interest

Rich Young

Lastly, we have Rich Young. Now a lot of you might not know very much about him, like me, because he stays very under the radar. What we do know about this mysterious After Effects aficionado, is he runs the famed AEportal. Quite possibly my favorite After Effects reporting website, he is almost first to the punch every time something new happens that deals with or a part of After Effects, or even motion graphics or vfx for that matter. Visit AEPortal
