Over the last year we’ve been getting really serious about Adobe After Effects here at Envato. Since our double launch late last year of VideoHive and Aetuts+, the two sites have been growing really quickly! Aetuts+ has grown into a stellar library of After Effects tutorials bringing a half million visitors a month, and VideoHive has rapidly grown into THE place to get After Effects project files with popular items selling as much as $12,000 worth and traffic exceeding 1.5 million pageviews a month!

Today I’m extremely happy to announce that we’re joining forces with another industry powerhouse: Rerendered.com and visionary After Effects producer Justin McClure. We have combined our inventory, providing you quick access to content from two of the leading sites in the AE Project Files game! The merge brings hundreds of new project files, many of which are already migrated over into our Project Files category. With our powers combined we are continuing to make VideoHive THE marketplace for Adobe After Effects!

VideoHive + Rerendered

By merging sites we’re combining our inventories into VideoHive’s After Effects Project Files category. This means you visit one site, from one account and have access to all of the great files from both sites. Alongside the file migration, we’ve also brought over new authors and buyers to join our community! Of course with a larger author base brings more file submissions, so you’ll have more frequent submissions and more of a variety to look through when searching for that perfect project to suit your needs.

Interview with Justin McClure

To kick off the merge, VideoHive site manager Mark Brodhuber sat down for a chat Justin McClure (one of the masterminds behind the creation of Rerendered) about his thoughts regarding the merger, and the future of VideoHive.

Q. Tell us a little bit about why you got started in video?

A: When I was 12 years old my brother and I would borrow my parents (then state-of-the-art) VHS video camera and create short films which were entirely edited in camera WITH music being pumped through a tape walk-man that was duct taped to the microphone. Yep, that is where it all started. My true passion developed later in college with my first After Effects 4.0 course. I was a Design major, but at Fort Hays State University you were required to have a final portfolio on an interactive CD. So along with learning programs like Director and InfiniD, After Effects for the animation and interactive components was essential. I was hooked. I mean, come on… Photoshop in motion? I was in love.

Q. Why After Effects, and why not a different software package?

A: I have never been opposed to trying new things. When Motion first came out I must of gave it a good full month of test driving, because I was sure that it was the next big thing. I also bought Shake when it first came out, I knew it wasn’t really motion graphics driven, but I wanted to have multiple tools for different needs. In the end, After Effects was just so easy to use and robust, it was really the only tool I needed.

Q. Are you a Mac or a PC? Any specific reasoning?

A: I am totally a MAC snob. I don’t have an apple sticker on my F-150 anywhere, but I can’t even begin to figure out how to adjust the volume on a PC. MAC is all that I have ever known, even since the days of Lemon-aid Stand and Oregon Trail… I realize I just hit a soft spot with a certain age group.

Q. We all love to hear each other’s war stories. Got any great horror jobs?

A: Not so much a war story, but my first week at CMT was a rough one. I was given a very small introductory project, I was to develop and animated a logo for a 5 sec open that would be on CMT.com. So I of course started where I always start, sketching and filtering through my available fonts. For some ungodly reason, Extensis Suitcase was giving me huge headaches. I think because CMT has a trillion fonts first of all, and secondly because I was of course like a kid in a candy store activating all of the cool new ones I had never seen before. Reggie, our groups IT guy, took a look and seemed to fix the issues I was having, but I was left with zero fonts activated… got to have at least the basic ones right? Anyway, at some point while activating, waiting, watching pin wheel, activating, waiting, watching pin wheel, I mistakenly ‘Activated All Fonts’ bringing the already slooow G5 to a screeching crawl and the issue that had been fixed was back again and I was too embarrassed to tell anyone. My Art Director at the time, Amie Nguyen, somehow without fail only walked by my workstation while I had my hands over my mouth, staring at my fonts with the pinwheel rotating. Gut wrenching and nerve racking experience, I was already the newbie treading water in the deep end of the pool and I thought for sure I was going to get fired before I even finished my first project. I hope Amie reads this, because I’m pretty sure even to this day, she thinks I have some kind of weird font fetish.

Q. You’ve worked with some amazing clients, such as the Discovery Channel and Dell. What’s been your experience working with such large clients, and what’s the project you’re most proud of.

A: I have had the opportunity to work with a large range of clients, some big and some small, but the recipe to do great work is the same every time. There maybe a few more pages in the branding guidelines and a couple more levels of reviews for the bigger fish, but that is to be expected. All in all, the process remains the same. I think I am most proud of the CMT Coyote Ugly show package, It was my first big solo project at CMT and I was able to get my hands dirty from start to finish. Directing the green screen shoot wasn’t so bad either.

Q. Can you tell us why you decided to launch Rerendered?

A: Rerendered started out as my personal library of experimental After Effects tests and cutting room floor materials. It certainly didn’t start out as a marketplace, it was simply an online location to keep my files available for download, instead of being scattered across multiple hard drives at home, work and in between. My friend, and later business partner, Larry Penrod, who at the time was helping me set up the site, had asked me if it maybe worth including other After Effects artists and also selling the files. We agreed to try it, but also agreed it should to be more like a garage sale and less of a corporate type of site. It was meant for AE artists to download and share files, very simple files, files that could save an hour perhaps and other files just to inspire creative things a third party plugin could do.

Q. What makes you feel that Rerendered is a good fit with VideoHive?

A: I think Rerendered is a great fit for VideoHive, because it fills a void. Most of the files you find on the current site are much more elaborate files that a producer might be more inclined to purchase as opposed to an After Effects artist. Having these types of smaller presets and pre-comp type files allows AE artists another outlet. Artist such as myself are not looking for, “replace photo & type here” plug and render types of files. But, I am however searching for little nuggets that I can change and alter very quickly and then sprinkle into a commercial or promo. Items such as trees and birds, simple little particular effects for a quick transition and so on and so forth. I am really excited for more of these types of files to start showing up, and I am looking forward to downloading them.

Q. In your opinion, what are the advantages that come with using stock motion graphics?

A: Besides the advantages I listed above, I would say the other big advantage, is introducing different styles and elements to your work. Of course they are also great time savers as well. One of the most creative things i have been exposed to while working in this field, is collaborating with multiple artists on a single project. I have always grown creatively every time, with no exceptions. Whether it is being exposed to a different way of animating or simply an introduction to a different style, I believe we all can grow from interacting with and learning from other artists and this can easily be achieved via stock items and the online community of VideoHive as easy as it can be from working with another artist sitting right next to you.

Q. Tell us a bit about SqueezeMe.tv?

A: SqueezeMe.tv started out as another internal idea actually. I wanted to create a home page that had nothing but the latest motion graphics industry’s news, highlights and tutorials all in one place. It is simply a one stop shop and I think if you are in to motion graphics or video at all, you will fall in love with it. Special thanks to Dominic Flask (link: www.dangerdom.com) and Jeff Lang for bringing it to life.

Q. Where do you see the industry going in the next ten years?

A: Without giving up my plot to rule the galaxy, here are a few things to be aware of. First off, there is a great new tool coming out soon called the internet. It will be amazing; you will be able to collaborate with people from around the world from the luxury of your very own home. All joking aside, most agencies and studios still are not utilizing this amazing tool, they simply don’t get it. They want to hire people in house and on site, and build with bricks and mortar. This method is on the brink of extinction, or at least a silent revolution. Times have changed, and a new trend has been set in motion and will remain to be the norm for the next 5 to 10 years. Everyone is looking for a bargain, including big businesses. I’m not saying you should lower your price tag, but you better be able to offer something new and have incentives for your customers. And if you are a big agency or studio you better be able to leverage your overhead, by hand picking temporary talent for each particular project as opposed to hiring someone full time with benefits that is mediocre because you think they can fill multiple rolls. You also might want to rethink those round trip plane tickets to Los Angles for your two creative directors, because you no longer need to be sitting right next to an editor, to be art directing. You no longer have to have everyone is the same building to collaborate effectively, you just need to have them on the same page.

Q. Do you have any advice for aspiring video artists?

A: Find something you love and then work your ass off owning it.

For just over three fantastic years FlashDen has been the jewel in Envato’s crown. It is our longest running and most active community, and thanks to the amazing authors who showcase their work there, has become the largest marketplace for Adobe Flash files in the world with over 8,500 items for sale.

Last week Adobe asked us to change our name and URL so that it would no longer contain the term ‘Flash’, which is a registered trademark of Adobe. We know that the success of our sites is about the community and content, not the names. So here at Envato HQ we’ve been busy thinking up new names and we think we’ve found a great new home for both our marketplace and our Tuts+ blog on Flash.

As of today the two sites now live at ActiveDen and Activetuts+.

The new names amend the use of the word Flash, open us up for adding other technologies and are short and memorable! To kick off the new names I thought I’d round up a few of the best tutorials and items on the sites:

Killer Flash Tutorials – Activetuts+

Though it’s one of our newer Tuts+ sites, Activetuts+ is already brim full of quality Adobe Flash, ActionScript, Air and Flex tutorials and gaining momentum with every passing week. Here’s a few of the standout tutorials:

A fluid web layout uses 100% width (and height) of the browser, floating all the contained elements into certain positions. This is opposed to fix-width layout where contents remain fixed no matter what the browser size is…

Get an After Effects Education from the Professionals.

Your most regularly updated source for AE content just got a little more Incredible! Prepare yourself for the goodness that is coming because the “After Effects” are gonna rock ya!

Today we’re happy to announce that Aetuts+ is opening the doors to its brand new Plus program. Like our sister sites Psdtuts+, Vectortuts+, Audiotuts+ and Nettuts+, our Plus Program will offer tutorials that go into even more detail than our regular free tuts, giving you an inside look on the techniques used by professionals in the field. We’ll still be publishing the same amount and quality of free tutorials, but once a week we’ll be publishing extra special ‘Plus’ content for members only. These tutorials will be a level above what we usually offer because with the help of Plus subscribers we are able to attract more high end, experienced talent to show us what they know.

From now on, AE Plus members will also have access to the AE project files for every single new tutorial published on the site. We have already added the project files for six previously published tutorials, so you can instantly add the effects to your own AE projects.

By subscribing to AE Plus you’ll also get access to exclusive Plus content from Psdtuts+, Nettuts+, Audiotuts+ and Vectortuts+. $9 will unlock the doors to high-end video training, tutorials, source files and sample, brush and vector packs worth hundreds of dollars. Join now! (once you’re a member, log-in at the Tuts+ Dashboard and go to ‘Plus Content’ to access your files). If you’re not quite sure, continue reading to get the full break-down of what we’ll be offering.

Here’s what you get:

1. Exclusive bonus tutorials teaching professional After Effects techniques

There are few industries where the techniques and methods of the professionals are so guarded in secrecy. We’ve lined up some of those professionals who are happy to break that unspoken oath of silence and teach you how things are done by the pros.

You’ll get tutorials that are in-depth and challenging, yet clearly taught and easy to follow. Video lessons make learning impressive techniques easy, and each Plus tutorial comes with a full set of project files and assets you can use as you follow along.

At less than the cost of a takeaway dinner, you’ll learn breathtaking techniques that will elevate your AE projects to another level.

2. Exclusive project files for every tutorial

Great After Effects projects files are hard to find, even if you pay big bucks for them. For $9 a month you’ll have access to the AEP files for every new tutorial we publish on the site, for as long as you’re a Plus member. As the site grows older this collection will increase to hundreds of project files that you can use in your own projects, both personal and commercial. If you love After Effects, you’ll know how big this is!

3. Access to all Plus content, on all Tuts+ sites, past and present

While AE Plus members will have access to immediately download project files, you will also be able to raid the archives of Psd Plus, Vector Plus, Audio Plus and Net Plus. You will immediately have access to several gigabytes of bonus tutorials, video training, download packs and source files for design, illustration, audio production and web development. You will also unlock the doors to all new Plus material published while you are a member. If another site goes Plus (Flashtuts+ is next!) you will get access to Plus content for that site as well.

All for $9 a month, or $22 for 3-months, or $78 for one year (save $30).

4. You help keep Aetuts+ strong and healthy

Though we sell a small amount of advertising on the site, it only covers a tiny fraction of our costs. We pay at least $150 per tutorial, and have a salaried editor running the site. This adds up to thousands of dollars in costs each month. Our Plus members allow us to stay sustainable, to keep publishing great free content and to increase the quality of tutorials on the site. When you sign-up to Plus, you help Aetuts+ stay strong and healthy into the future.

If you’re not 100% happy with Plus, we don’t want your money. That’s why we will buy back your subscription if you decide it’s not for you. You have one full month to make sure you’re getting value for money. Our friendly support members Jordan and Oz are on hand at all times to make good on our 100%, no-questions asked money-back guarantee.

In the last three years our Envato Marketplaces (FlashDen, ThemeForest, GraphicRiver, AudioJungle and VideoHive) have grown like gangbusters, with big communities, huge libraries of files and lots of activity. So when we set out to redesign them earlier this year everyone on the team knew it was going to be big. What we didn’t realise was HOW big it would eventually get! Today it gives me great pleasure to show you …

New Logos

Our marketplaces were looking a bit tired in the visual department. After all, these are sites by a company whose middle name is ‘web design’! So we set about reinventing the wheel with a whole new look, starting from the top with new logos. The illustrations were updated by the super talented Kai Loon and we are usung the wonderful open source font MgOpen Modata…

New Interface

Interface builds don’t get much more complicated, detailed and spectacularly difficult than the new Envato Marketplace design. Fortunately our marketplace front-end dev is Stuart Richardson, a web developer who laughs at problems that make other web developers cry in desperation.

Stu has built a massive interface complete with menus that give us space to grow, a grid view/list view browse, a better site switcher to flick between the five marketplaces, a slick new look and feel and a wildly improved interface. It is easily the biggest, hardest, and I believe best set of websites we’ve built to date …

New Look’n'Feel

Our new look and feel doesn’t stop at the interface either. Thanks to the always talented Derek Herman and my new design wingman here at Envato – Rod Blackney – we have new blog designs, a new marketplace wiki, new Twitter backgrounds, new PollDaddy skins, new badges, a ton of new banners, new Envato Mail and a brand spanking new audio player (courtesy of Lance Snider)!

Also a big thanks to Liam Mckay, Aaron Lynch and Kai Loon who all helped me with concept designs for the new marketplace look and feel. I needed help giving the sites a fresh look, and these three guys delivered!

Features, Features, Features!

… In 1972, a crack commando unit of programmers was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn’t commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Melbourne underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as ruby developers. If you have a site, if no-one else can build it, and if you can find them, well you still can’t hire the A-Team – because we already did.

And thank goodness for that, because for 3 months our crack ruby devs John, Erin, James, and Clinton have been pulling 10-14 hours shifts, coming in on weekends and doing whatever it takes to make the marketplaces … awesome! Here’s what they built …

1. Follow Authors

A little beta feature we’ve added is the ability to follow authors (yes, inspired by Twitter!) and view their latest files on your homepage. If it works well we hope to do much more with this baby!

2. Huge Forum Improvements

We’ve brought an all-new UI including first reply and last reply, better styles in the posts, email updates from forum threads, the ability to see threads and posts by a user, and a new recent threads sidebar. And we’ve hooked up the marketplace blogs and forums so you can chat about blog posts on the forums as well as see the latest news and announcements from inside the community!

3. Author Dashboard

If you’re one of our thousands of talented authors, you’ll appreciate the new Author Dashboard featuring latest comments, useful links, upload queue information, and latest author-only announcements!

4. Search Within, Search by Tags, Search by Attributes

We have been working hard to improve our search and packaged in with the launch are the ability to search within categories, portfolios, collections, search by tags, search by attributes, search users, search the wiki from support and many other search improvements!

5. File Types, Tags and More Item Page Improvements

Item pages are the core of our marketplaces, so we spent a lot of time making them more awesome. We’ve got a new audio player, inline video players for smaller videos, a "More Items By" section for authors to show off other items, a "File Types Included" area which we’re building icons into and enhancements to comments, tags and attributes!

6. Improved Extended Licensing System

Marketplace Manager Cyan has been working hard to improve our licensing system on the marketplaces and today we introduce our new Regular and Extended options allowing usage in all types of projects at more affordable rates. She has also written out plenty of helpful explanations of how and when to use different licenses in our marketplace wiki.

7. Collection Browsing, Rating and ‘Related Items by’

We’ve been slowly making collections more and more important. In this release you can now browse all public collections, as well as rate them! We’re now using collections to provide buyers with a way to find related items by showing top rated collections containing an item right on the item page!

8. New Wiki Housing Much More Information

Today also sees the launch of our new marketplace wiki at Wiki.Envato.com. It contains tons of articles, tips and FAQs about the marketplaces and gives us a storehouse to build a comprehensive knowledgebase about how to get the most out of the marketplaces!

9. Flourishes

… And there’s so much more! From multiple weekly features on the homepage to new smileys, a better rating widget to username checks on the sign up page, process bars to guide you through processes like signup and depositing to fields to allow users to show off social network profiles, more RSS feeds to Facebook pages, and lots of little features, flourishes and fixes!

Goodies #1 – Free Web Icon Set by TurboMilk

To help celebrate the launch we have a couple of goodies to giveaway. First up is a free set of 25 web icons in 3 sizes created by Eugene Artsebasov and the illustrious Turbomilk team!

Check them out over at GraphicRiver…

Goodies #2 – Marketplace Wallpapers

While the marketplaces are all clean lines and fresh highlights, we wanted to work in a bit of grunge for the blog designs. So Rod put together these super cool wallpapers which we reused in our Twitter and Blog designs. Grab one for your desktop…

What’s Next?

With the structure all in place we’re going to be working on tightening up the new layouts as well as fixing any little bugs (report any you see here). But more importantly we’re working on some big features to improve buying: shopping carts, and one-off purchases (so you don’t need to go through the deposit process).

We’re also going to be releasing not 1, not 2 … but 3 new marketplaces by the end of the year. Beginning with 3dOcean – our marketplace for 3d models, textures and all things three dimensional. Look out for that in October!

In the meantime on behalf of everyone on the team, we hope you enjoy the new design as much as we did building it!

Total Votes

What I Use

I grew up PC my whole life, but I started a job that provided me with a Mac Pro so I converted. I will say this though, I spend the vast majority of my professional time in Windows via bootcamp simply because I think editing in Sony Vegas is faster then any other program I’ve ever used… and yes, that means Avid, FCP, and Premiere. Just my valuable opinion, haha.

It’s been a hectic 3 days for us here at Envato. We’ve had a massively successful Birthday Bundle (over 5,000 sales in 3 days), lots of giveaways, a fantastic Tuts+ tutorial set up for free download and our first video interview. Here in the office we’ve also been celebrating today with a big lunch and lots of network gaming! With the birthday all wrapped up now though I thought I’d give you a very quick preview of what’s coming up in September…

All this before the end of September

We’re on a bit of a roll at the moment, what with the birthday celebrations, the launch of the new Envato.com website, lots and lots of recent upgrades to our server infrastructure and the launch of Phototuts+ … but it doesn’t stop there. Nope, in the next 6 weeks we have a rather huge amount of stuff planned which in turn means we’re all going to be working some serious overtime! Here’s what’s coming before the end of September:

Plus coming to Aetuts+
Since its inception Aetuts+ has been flying along. Now Skellie and new editor Adam Everett Miller are going to be taking things up a notch with the addition of bonus Plus content for members of our $9 a month Plus program.

Email Templates coming to ThemeForest
If you’ve ever designed HTML emails you know how painful it can be even with programs like Litmus. But soon you’ll be able to pick up affordable, high quality newsletter and email templates over at ThemeForest!

Brand New "How to Be Awesome at Work" blog … a
One of our most enduringly popular sites is FreelanceSwitch a site to make you better at freelancing. Well we’ve been thinking, what about everyone else – they probably want to be awesome too! So we’re launching a brand new blog called WorkAwesome.com. FreelanceSwitch editor Joel Falconer is at the helm and is compiling content for the new site for its imminent launch.

2 New AppStorm sites about Web Apps and Air Apps
In 2009 thousands of Mac software junkies have discovered our little Mac Apps blog – Mac.AppStorm well we’re expanding out into two new areas – Web Apps and Adobe Air Apps. Look out for the first of these next week!

The BIG one … Envato Marketplace Redesign
This has been in development for almost three months now and finally the new marketplace design is approaching readiness. It’s a total overhaul of the look and is packed with all sorts of features, including forum improvements, interface improvements, author following, and much, much more. It’s going to be massive!

So look out for all this and more! It’s going to be a big couple of months!
