Five Years of Envato

Five Years of Envato

It’s kinda crazy to think, but our little internet startup, Envato, has been on the air now for five years. We started back in 2006 as four very enthusiastic and totally green entrepreneurs with a shoestring budget and a love of the web. Fast forward five years and while we’re hopefully a little less green, we’re still incredibly passionate about Education, Marketplaces and the web! It’s been an amazing time and we’d like to share a look inside our Melbourne HQ offices, some stats about Envato and a big thank you to the community.

PhotoDune – Envato Photo Marketplace

PhotoDune – Envato Photo Marketplace

It’s been almost five years since we launched Envato, the company behind this site and many others, and in that time we’ve built eight digital marketplaces for everything from WordPress Themes to Background Music. With our fifth birthday coming up this weekend, we’re excited to announce the beta launch of our ninth marketplace: PhotoDune for royalty free stock photos.

Choose Your Apps

Choose Your Apps

Two years ago we started a little side project to review and roundup apps. Being bloggers, a kick-ass WordPress setup was the natural way to go. My little brother threw in a great idea for a name, and we lucked out when a super talented blogger named David Appleyard showed up offering to run the project. Two years on and AppStorm has become a little powerhouse here at Envato, for Mac apps, Web apps, iPhone and iPad apps, and starting today, Windows and Android apps.

New Higher Envato Marketplace Rates!

New Higher Envato Marketplace Rates!

For four years the Envato Marketplaces have helped authors around the world earn an income selling their digital wares. Along the way we’ve grown from one marketplace to seven, with more on the way. We’ve gone from hundreds of members to hundreds of thousands. Items from our marketplaces have appeared in projects for companies big and small, all around the world. And most importantly of all, we’ve had thousands of authors cash out earnings, ranging from a bit of money for a big weekend to sums in the tens of thousands of dollars a month!

It’s been an amazing ride, and here at Envato along with our commitment to growing Tuts+, we are completely committed to making our marketplaces the best around. That’s why I’m very excited today to announce that as of the end of September we are rolling out some dramatically improved rates for all our exclusive authors!

Redesign and Other Tuts News

Over the last three days we’ve been steadily rolling out a new Tuts+ theme across all 8 sites. The new design is a refinement more than a big change, with lots of little improvements in usability and more suited to big screens. Read on to learn more about the redesign and lots of news about Plus!

ActiveDen and Activetuts – New Names, Same Awesome Content

For just over three fantastic years FlashDen has been the jewel in Envato’s crown. It is our longest running and most active community, and thanks to the amazing authors who showcase their work there, has become the largest marketplace for Adobe Flash files in the world with over 8,500 items for sale.

Last week Adobe asked us to change our name and URL so that it would no longer contain the term ‘Flash’, which is a registered trademark of Adobe. We know that the success of our sites is about the community and content, not the names. So here at Envato HQ we’ve been busy thinking up new names and we think we’ve found a great new home for both our marketplace and our Tuts+ blog on Flash.

As of today the two sites now live at ActiveDen and Activetuts+.

Interview with Envato Founders Collis and Cyan

One of the best things about working here at Envato is that we have an awesome team of people building, managing, writing, reviewing and working on our sites. Yep, things have come a long way since the early days when there was just a few of us trying to do everything!

Recently our awesome Tuts+ interviewer Emil asked if I minded being video interviewed with some questions put forward by the Psdtuts+ readers. Since no-one really wants to see my enormous head on screen for too long a period of time, I asked my lovely wife and partner in crime Cyan if she’d be in on the interview and we thought we’d put up the video to help celebrate 3 years of Envato.

7 Must Read After Effects Blogs

No matter what level you’re at with your After Effects work, it’s always a good idea to keep up with industry leading blogs. So to get your feed reader started, I asked our VideoHive blogger Michael Capitelli to put together 6 great sites, plus I’ve added a summary of Michael’s own Inside the Hive blog, which makes 7 Must Read After Effects blogs.

Premium After Effects Project Files (via VideoHive)

As many of you know, the team behind Aetuts+ is also responsible for a site called VideoHive which we launched in December last year. VideoHive is a marketplace for buying and selling motion graphics and AE Project files and as our only sponsor pays the mounting bandwidth bills to keep this site running!

Today I’m showcasing some of the best files on our marketplaces over here on Tuts+ to show our audiences not only what’s available to buy, but for potential authors what sorts of things you can sell!
