It’s Mac Lovers Week at Aetuts!

Aug 17th in News by Adam Everett Miller

This is a very action packed week for the Envato network as it turns 3 years old! Well along with that, we happen to be having our own little party "Aetuts+ specific". We're excited to celebrate Mac Lovers Week, a week where all our content is Apple-Centric!
If you "option" instead of "alt"... If you were perfectly content without a right click... if you have no clue what a "Start bar" is... If somebody says "Steve Jobs" and you feel all tingly inside... This is your week!

I am the editor of Aetuts+. Originally from Minnesota, I moved to Virginia in 2004 where I am the media director of a marketing company.

Things to look forward to this week:

  • Available for download, a free Bad TV Plugin submitted by Satya. This will be an awesome little time saver to have in your toolbox. But guess what, it only works for Macs.
  • Day 2 of the FCP Beginners Tutorials. If you're just getting started with editing, it's ok, you still belong!
  • We have a tutorial on how to create the Mac OSX Wallpaper Theme using Zaxwerks Invigorator Pro.
  • We will then being having a Mac OSX Intro Video tutorial by Satya where he'll be implementing some incredible 3d insight!
  • We're also going to have an Apple Orchard Roundup where you can pick from a big juicy selection of useful Mac content, so keep checking in!
  • Also, with Envato's birthday celebration this week, it just so happens that they're giving away Two 20" iMacs! (details to come)

We need to know which your prefer!

I've gotten a lot of comments alluding to AE users loving their Macs, but I feel like there might be some PC users out there as well... I just don't know. Here's what I need. Don't leave this page until you comment below on what you're using and why. That's right, I WANT to know... somebody finally cares what you think. Maybe we'll count the votes to find out which users truly are proud of their OS!

Enjoy this Post?

We'd love your vote!

LOL! you need to open your mind and be prepared to work on all sorts of systems if you want to work in this industry.
I have worked in several reputable studios over the past few years, and each one has used different systems, but mostly MAC may I add.

When I was younger, I was like you, a dedicated PC user who had “issues” with MACs.But that was about to change!!
Even though PC’s are what I mainly use at home, until you purchase a high end MAC you will always be missing out on their awesome power and fluid systems. I love my macbook pro, and i love my MAC power PC alll the same as my monster desktop PC. They are all good for different software and different uses.
Learn to love the MAC, they are beautiful machines.

Man, how did you glean all this information about kyle from something as simple as “pcs forever man”? You are good! By the way, yes I know Macs dominate the field but there is nothing you can do on a Mac that you can’t do on a PC. Nothing. I own both in case you are wondering.

There is, however, something you can do on a PC that you can’t do on a mac. Get a virus :)

No, you can get viruses on Mac too. Too bad Mac users are prone to social engineering a bit more than others (with the false feeling that everything will be fine and dandy forever).

“yes I know Macs dominate the field but there is nothing you can do on a Mac that you can’t do on a PC”

OSX is a much faster and effect operating system.
Being built on unix mac’s cant get windows style viruses.
Everything on a mac is better. From start up to shut down – the whole experience.

I prefer the Windows OS because of the unlimited customization options (granted, you have to fiddle with some Windows files), the way wider variety of applications and most importantly:
I prefer being able to build my own rig (which also is way way way way way cheaper than buying a Mac). Nothing beats finishing your own computer!

I’m using a Mac because they’re faster and more reliable! I don’t use PC’s anymore because I always used to get viruses and malware. Also, programs like Photoshop and Illustrator (as well as AE) run slower on PC’s than they do on Mac. Everything on a Mac has been streamlined to work perfectly. This is why I have a Mac!

I use a mac, done so all my life. I also own a PC, but I think mac is easier to work with since I think the interface is way more user friendly then the PC one, and mac is also more stable, I’m 15 now, have a mac all my life long and I’ve never had a virus. It’s also more stable for webservers since it’s unix based.

There are hunderds of other reasons, but I don’t have time to write that all down now.

BUT I love my Mac. My Mac opened me the world to all the creative stuff music, video, graphic design. Furthermore I am DJ and so I have to have a computer which I can trust. And I trust my Mac much more and any Windows machine(bad experiences).

i get so sad when the issue of creativity gets mangled with the pc vs. mac discussion.

NO! you are not more creative on a mac. As mentioned earlier in this thread, the application decides – your brain even more so.

    YES! Macs look better

I might get crucified for this…but…pc offer more processing power pr. dollar. when you argue that a mac is faster you have to define what you are comparing with. a pc with roughly same specs at half the cost! in a production workflow for a small business this actually does matter. at this point in time i would argue that a properly tuned pc is the better choice for small media production facilities.
and dont surf the dark side of the net on your production machine!

Of course you are not more creative on a mac. And it’s also real obvious that a decked out Windows machine will be much less expensive than a high-end mac computer.

If you buy a mac, you’re paying for their sleek design and apple logo. If you don’t care about that stuff, you’re probably going to use a windows machine :P

Well, to beat a dead horse, a Mac is a PC (Personal Computer). In the old days we called “PC’s” Wintel machines. Anyways, while pretty much everything Adobe is about the same on both, the Mac OS is incredibly better. It’s ridonculous how much better. To put a number on it, I would have to say 143% better. Maybe more.

I am, and always was a PC user. I always thought PC was just built better. Easier to use and get around in. Its more common and more programs and software are built for a PC. I just upgraded a few months ago to a DELL XPS 630i with a Core2 Quad Processor with 8GB RAM and 2TB of memory, running on Windows Vista. Which is an amazing ride, especially working with these VFX software like AE. Then when it came to Macs I would think, small, laptop, office, etc. Nothing for BIG editing and lots of memory. But if for some reason I were to purchase a Mac or win won, I would use it as a secondary computer. Do some editing on it, like audio or, depnding on what it can do, 3d modeling. (Which gets in the way on my computer)

You could get a macpro with 8 cores and 8 gigs of RAM. I’m sure that could handle some sort of audio/visual editing :P

However, you could also build a PC with the same specs for like 1/5 the price :D

If you have the money, Macs are nice.

You realise you said that your PC has 8GB of RAM, which is also known as memory, then said straight after it that it has 2TB of memory? I assume you did mean that it was a 2TB hard drive, but still, I find it amusing that you managed to make that error.

Mac user, and will always be. I don’t think a Mac is more expensive, giving that you’ll probably invest in tech maintenance alot with a PC, and additional software like Anti-virus and such(what i used to do when I started out on a PC). And PC’s are outdated really really fast. Windows keeps on being more power hungry and always needs more space. Snow Leopard is actually getting reduced in size. I still use my G4 which runs leopard really good. It’s 8 years old. Try doing that with a PC and windoze vista or 7.

So bottom line, Macs are a great deal, easy to use, hardly no tech maintenance and look really cool.

I don’t think Apple uses some super awesome, different computer hardware that keeps it from being outdated just as fast as “PC hardware.”

Pretty sure a computer is a computer and everything right now will become obsolete all at the same time.

News Flash – there is no difference. It’s all the same hardware. Mac zealots for years bragged about their superior operating system. Then Jobs came back and completely dumped it for OS X. The Mac zealots immediately bowed down in awe although it was a POS for the first few iterations. At that time all that separated the Mac fantasy users superiority complex was the microprocessor. The painfully slow Motorola Power PC reduced instruction set – easy melt model. Guess what? Macs use Intel chips now just like windows boxes. There is nothing wrong with a Mac accept the pretentious snobbery of the Mac fundamentalist and the ridiculous price tag. And who says they look better. How about that clam shell laptop, the cube? the iMac that looks like the lamp from the Pixar opening, the original iMac Yuck. Looking at my old Macs is like looking at bad fashions from the seventies. You just can’t believe people were wearing those striped bell bottoms and platform shoes.

I doesn’t matter to me what I work on as long as it’s got enough memory a powerful chip a good graphics card and fast hard drives.

    Three biggest downsides of Mac:
Ever try Gaming on a Mac….hah
Ever try finding printer drivers on a Mac… rough

I’m not going to get involved in the slight fanboy’ism in some of these comments.

Besides that, I own a macbook with both windows and Mac Os X on it, and I have to say I’ve loaded into windows a few more times than Mac Os X, for the simple reason that I use Windows Live Messenger for a lot of my communication and the version on Mac OS doesn’t cut it. I also use a lot of business apps such as Remote Assistance and a few more that aren’t available on the Mac Os. But apart from this my creative side really does come out when I combine the two. Especially in music production, with FL Studio being my creative brainstorm and Logic Pro being my main workhorse for everything else.

    Mac.

The only reasons I can think that someone would not use a Mac is the following:

    1. They play PC Games a lot.
    2. They can’t afford a Mac.
    3. They already have an extensive library of PC software (lots of money’s worth)
    4. Have an IT team hired to solve their problems.

I’ve been using a Mac for the better part of 10 years or so (I’m only 17) and I’ve also used PC for nearly that time as well. I choose Mac because the hardware is great, even if it’s absurdly expensive. OSX is incredible, and so much more stable then any Window’s computer I’ve used. Not to mention the much better security thanks to UNIX. For doing graphics and stuff, Mac really is the choice to go I believe. And hey, if you need a few Window’s apps, guess what! You can easily run Windows off your system. It’s really the all inclusive package.

I use a Powermac G5 2005 PowerPC model. Don’t know how much longer until I upgrade to a newer mac. Once I need CS4 or higher, I guess I’ll have to.

The only things I miss about a PC are the games. Man I especially miss those old MS DOS based games like Zork.

    now i use both.
my win machines (vista64) mainly for 3ds max, zbrush and some other non-mac apps.
    (i don’t like bootcamp)
and cs4, zbrush and some musicsoft on a imac 24″ and a 15″ macbook pro.
in my opinion the mac pro machines are overprized.

As someone else stated, both have pros and cons. I have a Mac at work and use my PC at home so I believe I am knowledgeable of both systems.

If you have the money, and you prefer stuff to just arrive and work 100%, then Mac is the way to go.

If you are more “hardcore”, PC is often a better choice, as you are able to build your own powerhouse (you can build a PC way better than the best Mac Pro for less the price of one), but that requires a lot of time, knowledge and is less stable.

Talking about inner design, I don’t really think neither of them wins, as you can customize the windows desktop in incredibly many ways (especially on XP); this is my windows desktop for example: http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/2853/desktopssh.jpg

Okay, I admit, that required fiddling with various Windows files (which the average user cannot do and is afraid of doing), but it was worth it.

On the subject on speed, yes many graphical applications are made to worker faster on a Mac, but that is nothing good Windows hardware can’t compensate.

And to end this wall of text:
“But you can only get X and Y programs on a mac!”
Yes, but you can get just as good equilevants (spelled?) on a Windows.

I am using a PC, purley because it was avaliable to me. I’m only 15, it took me long enough to save up for the student version of Adobe Production Premium.

I however, am a bit of a geek. I would prefer to have both OSX and Windows at my fingertips… possibly on th same machine. Whehn I can afford it I will buy a mac. I can live with a PC just now.

    I’m a PC!
Because that’s what my school uses, and what i’m more familiar with.
Macs definitely seem cool but i cant help feel you pay extra for a brand name and social status… still, i would like to try out a Mac soon.

BUT, definitely recognise that there are PC users out there.

I use a Mac Pro and an HP workstation running Windows side by side every day at work.

They have similar specs and cost about the same (the HP was actually slightly more expensive).

Amazing how many people don’t know the differences between a consumer PC and a professional workstation. Those differences cost money, but they also provide something of value. HP’s workstations are #1 among Windows machines imho, but they’re not quite up to the overall hardware design of the Mac Pro (HP’s new Z800 workstations may have changed that, I haven’t had time to check them out yet.)

I much prefer OS X over Windows, because it is more elegant and pleasant to work with, and it doesn’t get frequently sidetracked by Windows’ endless security patches that have to be downloaded, installed and system-restarted on top of the daily virus updates. So I find myself being more productive on the Mac.

There are also Mac-only programs that are key for my work, including Final Cut Studio. Key because it is a good tool, and even if it wasn’t I’d have to use it to be able to work with other team members in an industry that is largely FCP.

SuperDuper! is another monster favorite program, I wish this was available for Windows machines.

Now, whoever wrote that Mac users are “content without a right-click…” Duh.

Right-clicks save time and have been supported on Macs for many years now.

I use windows linux and OSX on all my machines

why well because i like choice and the freedom to work on all platforms makes me all tingly inside :P

seriously though i am a creataholic i make everything from music to animation to cakes to origami well you get the idea….working on all platforms gives me the freedom to tailored my creative environment for my needs. Windows is a powerhouse and its a fall back when software the software is not available for mac. Mac is my all day everyday go to os, it is my shiny aluminum friend. Apart from the odd (fetch the men in white coats) statements it is my reliable portable workstation when performing its something that is not just a nicety its a necessity knowing that the system wont crash even if the app does or if a keyboard/midi controller gets yanked i wont have to restart my daw to get it working again. these things are priceless to me.

linux…well its free and i believe it may be the future ……. at least for certain applications (smart phones, netbooks etc)

    anyway enough blabber

    peace

    Proud Mac user.
I used to use only PCs and saw macs as pointless – why would you spend so much more money?
However, started to work in the industry and realised I sorta needed a mac. Now, I’ll never go back to PC. I hate when I have to switch over to PCs, it just seems so primitive. Seriously, though it does seem to be much less stable, and Final Cut Pro is what I use to edit with now so I couldn’t go back to PC even if I wanted to.

Basically what I’m getting here from the Mac users is that they are too stupid to operate Windows. Macs are like the McDonalds cash register. Instead of numbers on the key pad Micky D’s discovered it was easier for their employees to remember a picture of an Egg McMuffin rather than it’s price. A lot like the iPhone. Macs are contributing to the whole dumbing down of society.

yatchacha : – ) Take that Mac users.

As has been stated by several people here…..Macs don’t run faster and their OS’s are not more user-friendly…but they do cost twice as much.

In the market for a new computer, interestingly enough, and the PC I want will cost me about $2800. A mac with comperable specs was going to cost just over $5000. Think of all the programs I can buy with that $2200+ savings.

There is a snobbery about Macs that is laughable. Been working in the video industry now for five years and have never had a hard time finding work….even doing all of it on my shabby old “pc.”

Started 5 years ago with 3D Animation Software and had to use PC because it was really hard to get it in MAC Version. Still to this day there are a lot of Software programs out there that FOCUS mainly on PC and you have to wait for a MAC copy to show up. Worked with both and still it really doesn’t matter what I use. Besides CREATIVITY comes from with in, not from your COMPUTER!!!

LINUX …… Started to use this just recently since it became much more user friendly and I just love it. Definently is going to ROCK the industry in the near future.

Guh, I hate scanning through every single comment just so I can see if what I plan on saying will be redundant or not.

Anyway, I use Mac, grew up with them and the only times I ever have used Windows computers are when totally unavoidable.

Now, I could make arguments about why “Mac is better”, but since that’s not what we’ve been asked, we have instead been asked to say what OS/Computer we use and for what reasons, here’s why I prefer Mac, even if I hadn’t grown up with them.

    1. In the one month I actively used a PC laptop, I had to download several hundred updates to XP, most of them small security updates that were coming in every single day. My Mac computers maybe have one security update every 3 months, as for the updates, the only updates that come in are ones for the actual applications or substantial updates for the OS. So, reason 1 is that on my Mac, I don’t get pestered every single day to restart my computer because an update was downloaded, nor do updates download without notice on the default system preference.

    2. Every time I connected a mouse besides the Apple Mighty Mouse, or just plug anything into one of the USB ports on my PC, let alone try to play a measly 5MB game, I have to constantly go through an install wizard because the right driver for the right kind of model of mouse or whatever isn’t on the computer. On my Mac, everything is plug and play, or drag and drop. “Installing” any application short of one of the big name companies, like Adobe or Autodesk etc. takes only 5 seconds to drag the program to my computer from the disk image.

    3. The PC laptop I noted, I got in 2005. It now doesn’t last 5 minutes past a startup before overheating. As one of my 2008 textbooks mentioned, the average PC lifespan is 3 years. My G3 Cube I bought over 10 years ago only started playing up in the last year or so, in regards to being able to actually display on a connected monitor. The actual computer still works fine as a server now, not obsolete and has worked fine for almost a year while sitting in my dusty garage that would wreck a PC in one day.

    4. My PC, for one thing, I had to install the OS myself, but for another, after the installation of the OS, then the antivirus software, then Office, I found that just about all of the builtin programs on the computer was either trial software or useless for anything. On my Mac, the installed software, beyond iLife, is:

    A good web browser
A dictionary and spellchecker that actually works
    Address Book
    Organiser
    Email
    A good media player
    Dashboard

    5. Though you might have already guessed from the previous points, my PC was riddled with viruses. Because of these, I had to constantly defragment my hard drive and/or reinstall the OS, usually on a monthly basis. On my Mac, in fact, on Macs in general, viruses don’t exist. I get told that’s because no one makes viruses for Macs since they’re so unpopular, har har, but that doesn’t change the fact that you don’t get viruses on Macs.

So that’s it. Obviously I’m not going to change any PC user’s mind about things, but I felt like sharing my thoughts at least.

    Regards,

    ≈Roy42

well .. guys please stop with these mac vs pc discussion .. the entire net is stuffed with such debates .. and well to correct you guys it should actually be mac vs windows not mac vs pc . coz pc means personal computer .. and mac is a personl computer as well .. so this means that this entire topic is just wrong
and well i use mac . windows and ubuntu .. i got all three of them .. i have a 8 core mac .. a i7 windows machine .. and a dual core ubuntu .. and i love all three of them
each one of the os has its own cons and pros .. none of them are absolutely perfect
yeah its true that macs give u a lot more out of the box .. but apple charges for that .. though osx is a beautiful os but it cannot completely replace windows .. at some point you do require a windows machine ( specially gamers )
its just pointless choosing one .. its a matter of personl choice .. why do windows users keep abusing mac users and vice versa …both of them are equally good .. infact ubuntu could be really huge if some huge company supports it and thinks of developing it further .. i mean for being free . it gives windows a serious run for money .. the only thing linux misses is 3rd party softwares … none of the major co. care to take out a linux version

    PCs forever?
    Nah.
    Amiga forever!

j/k I use Windows/Linux dual boot on all my computers. Some day, that may change. Either when Apple officially supports generic hardware, or when Adobe supports Linux.

…or when Amiga makes an amazing comeback!
