Folks - guys like Andrew Kramer, myself, John Dickinson, Harry Frank, Eran Stern, Maltaannon...etc., use our tutorials to make money in a different way. We use them to drive traffic to our sites and to sell products and/or training. We use them to promote ourselves and to drive work in our direction. This site does not work that way.

It costs a lot of money to maintain a site, and it takes a lot of time to create a good tutorial. No one has a problem with sites like fxphd charging money. Suck it up, and support the people who are going to help you make a lot more money then you're going to spend here.

To the Admin's on AEtuts: don't forget that a great way to sell great training is to offer great free training as an example. You've done great work here, providing really interesting and useful stuff - keep it up and people will get over themselves pretty quickly.

Well, feel free to behave like a good consumer, a good citizen, a good tax-payer and everybody will accept that you are a middle-class subject.

"I’m concerned that anything that looks to be a popular seller will be coined a ‘+’ tutorial, leaving the less impressive ones free to generate new/maintain traffic."

As a former Tuts+ editor I can tell you Plus tutorials and regular tutorials are sourced separately so there is no way this can happen; Plus tutorials aren't simply taken from the pool of regular submissions. They're commissioned from the get-go to be a higher quality piece.

dunno if i'd use the drug reference, but you're kinda on to emergent online advertising tactics. Offer something great to generate traffic, then have your products aligned next to them, much like video copilot. Wicked tutorials get a big audience who also see your products - in their case plugins that are very good and very well priced. Hell, I bought twitch the other day cause it was the only thing capable of doing what I needed and it was dirt cheap.

dunno if i like paying for tutorials on technique tbh.

I'm concerned that anything that looks to be a popular seller will be coined a '+' tutorial, leaving the less impressive ones free to generate new/maintain traffic.

I've been really impressed so far with AE Tuts, and was dissapointed with some of the + selections in the photoshop area for example. I really hope you guys know what you're doing and can maintain the already excellent standard you have for the free tuts, and maybe if your + tuts go beyond what you've got here (like, really beyond because the standard keeps getting raised here) I could be persuaded - but I highly doubt that as poor student (who probably represents a significant proportion of your viewers).

A suggestion I have would be maybe to tailor these + tuts towards more industry specific stuff, like work flows or common practice - stuff you don't really learn until you're in a studio. This is critical knowledge that isn't taught in schools and is invaluable to graduates especially. Studios can always teach you the bells and whistles of After Effects, so maybe you can arm people with better tools to land jobs or integrate into the work force.
