Author: Adam Everett Miller

I am the editor of Aetuts+. Originally from Minnesota, I moved to Virginia in 2004 where I am the media director of a marketing company.

Today we're happy to announce that Aetuts+ is opening the doors to its brand new Plus program. Like our sister sites Psdtuts+, Vectortuts+, Audiotuts+ and Nettuts+, our Plus Program will offer tutorials that go into even more detail than our regular free tuts, giving you an inside look on the techniques used by professionals in the field. We'll still be publishing the same amount and quality of free tutorials, but once a week we'll be publishing extra special 'Plus' content for members only. These tutorials will be a level above what we usually offer because with the help of Plus subscribers we are able to attract more high end, experienced talent to show us what they know.

From now on, AE Plus members will also have access to the AE project files for every single new tutorial published on the site. We have already added the project files for six previously published tutorials, so you can instantly add the effects to your own AE projects.

By subscribing to AE Plus you'll also get access to exclusive Plus content from Psdtuts+, Nettuts+, Audiotuts+ and Vectortuts+. $9 will unlock the doors to high-end video training, tutorials, source files and sample, brush and vector packs worth hundreds of dollars. Join now! (once you're a member, log-in at the Tuts+ Dashboard and go to 'Plus Content' to access your files). If you're not quite sure, continue reading to get the full break-down of what we'll be offering.

Here's what you get:

1. Exclusive bonus tutorials teaching professional After Effects techniques

There are few industries where the techniques and methods of the professionals are so guarded in secrecy. We've lined up some of those professionals who are happy to break that unspoken oath of silence and teach you how things are done by the pros.

You'll get tutorials that are in-depth and challenging, yet clearly taught and easy to follow. Video lessons make learning impressive techniques easy, and each Plus tutorial comes with a full set of project files and assets you can use as you follow along.

At less than the cost of a takeaway dinner, you'll learn breathtaking techniques that will elevate your AE projects to another level.

    • 2. Exclusive project files for every tutorial

Great After Effects projects files are hard to find, even if you pay big bucks for them. For $9 a month you'll have access to the AEP files for every new tutorial we publish on the site, for as long as you're a Plus member. As the site grows older this collection will increase to hundreds of project files that you can use in your own projects, both personal and commercial. If you love After Effects, you'll know how big this is!

      3. Access to all Plus content, on all Tuts+ sites, past and present

While AE Plus members will have access to immediately download project files, you will also be able to raid the archives of Psd Plus, Vector Plus, Audio Plus and Net Plus. You will immediately have access to several gigabytes of bonus tutorials, video training, download packs and source files for design, illustration, audio production and web development. You will also unlock the doors to all new Plus material published while you are a member. If another site goes Plus (Flashtuts+ is next!) you will get access to Plus content for that site as well.

All for $9 a month, or $22 for 3-months, or $78 for one year (save $30).

      4. You help keep Aetuts+ strong and healthy

Though we sell a small amount of advertising on the site, it only covers a tiny fraction of our costs. We pay at least $150 per tutorial, and have a salaried editor running the site. This adds up to thousands of dollars in costs each month. Our Plus members allow us to stay sustainable, to keep publishing great free content and to increase the quality of tutorials on the site. When you sign-up to Plus, you help Aetuts+ stay strong and healthy into the future.

      5. Plus isn't for you? We'll buy back your first month. It's our 100% money back guarantee.

If you're not 100% happy with Plus, we don't want your money. That's why we will buy back your subscription if you decide it's not for you. You have one full month to make sure you're getting value for money. Our friendly support members Jordan and Oz are on hand at all times to make good on our 100%, no-questions asked money-back guarantee.

Once you're a member, login at the Tuts+ Dashboard and go to 'Plus Content' to claim your downloads.

What about free tutorials like Andrew Kramer ?

Gotta make a living somehow. Andrew sells plenty of things to justify his free tutorials, but since this site doesn’t sell products they have to rely on other means to keep the site alive.

      ???
Why people always want everything for free?
The authors need to get paid for their excellent work… You work as a voluntary or for free??? I think no, for sure you receive a check for your hard work, because you need to bring food to your family right?

      Hey Michael,

Andrew funds the time he spends on free tutorials with the many products sold through VideoCopilot.net. For us, Plus is our ‘product’ so we can fund all the free content on the site.

Great addition guys! This is a great way to keep the site alive… and for such a low price, all the info/downloads you’re giving away are a steal!
For all the nay-sayers out there… AEtuts specifically said that they’d “still be publishing the same amount and quality of free tutorials”. So no worries. The plus section is just extra… think of it as being separate even. It seems silly to be upset with that; it’d be like if you always got free apples from a local apple stand, but then you got mad when the owner of the apple stand started selling oranges to people in addition. You’re still getting your apples! And for free! Be happy… and if you want to support this great site and learn some even higher quality information, buy an orange.

Why is this the end of aetuts exactly? You’re still getting the same uber content without paying a dime.

    $9 is nothing…..

I class $9 for PSDTUTS, AETUTS, AUDIOTUTS + VECTORTUTS a massive baragin.

To be honest they are really just giving making the plus more more money well spend.

If I was to buy 4 magerzines in a month on on each topic I would be looking at at least $27.

Andrew kramers tutorials are fanatasic but he gets lots of money from his products and he also doesn’t pay others to write tutorials.

Every author on all the sites gets paid and these out goings cannot be covered from just adverts…….

Those people who are saying that they are leaving the site are just being petty…… and want to cause a stir.

    [/end rant]

I really like(d) this site, however it was always suspicious-looking:

That is too many and too frequently gathered infos and too many
free and oftentimes very good tutorials.
Some weeks back I suddendly realized, this is the method to make people become addicted. Give them some drugs for free and then wait…..Well, and now it became true, I am really disappointed.

dunno if i’d use the drug reference, but you’re kinda on to emergent online advertising tactics. Offer something great to generate traffic, then have your products aligned next to them, much like video copilot. Wicked tutorials get a big audience who also see your products – in their case plugins that are very good and very well priced. Hell, I bought twitch the other day cause it was the only thing capable of doing what I needed and it was dirt cheap.

dunno if i like paying for tutorials on technique tbh.

I would not mind paying this reasonable amount for the extensive tutorials that are expected…after all, the free ones themselves are pretty thorough :)

For all those complaining about paying a measly amount for such great work then I say go out, start your own website and give everything away. I’ve been a plus member for almost a year now. The fact that there is even more value than when I joined is very satisfying. Thank you.

I’m concerned that anything that looks to be a popular seller will be coined a ‘+’ tutorial, leaving the less impressive ones free to generate new/maintain traffic.

I’ve been really impressed so far with AE Tuts, and was dissapointed with some of the + selections in the photoshop area for example. I really hope you guys know what you’re doing and can maintain the already excellent standard you have for the free tuts, and maybe if your + tuts go beyond what you’ve got here (like, really beyond because the standard keeps getting raised here) I could be persuaded – but I highly doubt that as poor student (who probably represents a significant proportion of your viewers).

A suggestion I have would be maybe to tailor these + tuts towards more industry specific stuff, like work flows or common practice – stuff you don’t really learn until you’re in a studio. This is critical knowledge that isn’t taught in schools and is invaluable to graduates especially. Studios can always teach you the bells and whistles of After Effects, so maybe you can arm people with better tools to land jobs or integrate into the work force.

As a former Tuts+ editor I can tell you Plus tutorials and regular tutorials are sourced separately so there is no way this can happen; Plus tutorials aren’t simply taken from the pool of regular submissions. They’re commissioned from the get-go to be a higher quality piece.

Folks – guys like Andrew Kramer, myself, John Dickinson, Harry Frank, Eran Stern, Maltaannon…etc., use our tutorials to make money in a different way. We use them to drive traffic to our sites and to sell products and/or training. We use them to promote ourselves and to drive work in our direction. This site does not work that way.

It costs a lot of money to maintain a site, and it takes a lot of time to create a good tutorial. No one has a problem with sites like fxphd charging money. Suck it up, and support the people who are going to help you make a lot more money then you’re going to spend here.

To the Admin’s on AEtuts: don’t forget that a great way to sell great training is to offer great free training as an example. You’ve done great work here, providing really interesting and useful stuff – keep it up and people will get over themselves pretty quickly.
