Inspirational Typography Video Roundup

Rock N Rolla Opening Titles
Let’s start off with a bang. Danny Yount is a designer/director who has designed many famous title sequences. In his latest sequence design, “Rock N Rolla”, he takes still images, adds some style and ends up with a ‘killa’ type design.

The Child
“The Child” takes you through the experience of a freaked out soon-to-be dad, a pregnant wife and a crazy car chase through the city on the way to the hostpital. Oh yeah, and EVERYTHING is made out of words.

Kanye West – The Good Life
Kanye West’s video featuring T-Pain entitled “The Good Life” has some awesome typographic elements in it and shows a great mix of bouncy animation for use with live action.

Flash On The Beach
The Ronin did something truly original in this piece. He had the titles made out of plastic and beautifully shot them on the beach. He cleverly allowed the type to interact with the environment, like wind knocking letters down and people stepping over words.

Trollback – Pop!Tech 2008
This open created by Trollback & Co, embraced the theme of Pop!Tech with organic elements like water growing whip-like arms and corrosion. This is a piece that takes three colors: white, black and red, and creates a truly stunning piece of art.

Flickermood
“Flickermood 2.0″ by Sebastian Lange is described as “The next level of this experimental typographic orgy.” Personally I couldn’t agree more. This video takes hundreds… thousands of letters and words which are flying everywhere to a really funky beat. All you really need to know is it looks amazing.

Ya no sé qué hacer conmigo
This is another one of those typographic pieces that we see all over youtube, but this one stand out above the rest. Really well put together, this video integrates characters which seem to be “cartoonified” and mixes them with typographic elements along with other objects that help tell the whole story.

Troika – FOX Branding
You gotta love Troika. They have done tons of branding packages for lots of major networks, but the package put together for FOX is just unbelievable. Everything flows really great, but pay attention to the scanline-ish words transition as some of the characters disintegrate and come together… pretty radical.

Wyld Stallions – Punish The Atom
This piece is a promo spot for an upcoming record by punk band, Punish The Atom. It uses all still pictures of the band, cuts them out, adds a music track, some distressed type, some crazy movement, and viola! You got yourself a killer looking promo.

Superfad – New Museum
Superfad is an amazing design company. They have produce a bunch of great typographic spots recently. This one in particular caught my eye, it is an holiday e-card that uses a quirky music track to display a lot of information in a relatively small amount of time. Looks sharp too.

Superfad – Visa go. Spot
Another one from Superfad! This piece doesn’t use too many words, but that’s okay because they make quite an impact with only one word. Notice how they integrate the word ‘go’ into a bunch of scenarios, all of which I am sure can be recreated in After Effects ;-)

Superfad – Gap – Perez Hilton
Alright, one last one from Superfad! Like many in a series of GAP commercials, sketchy typography was used to convey a monologue spoken by Perez on a pedestal. Very cool use of 3D space and live action.

Thank You For Smoking Opening Titles
The opening titles for the movie “Thank You For Smoking” takes tons of vintage-esque cigarette posters, casings, and branding and sends you through the opening credits integrating all the elements along the way.

DVein BL.DVEIN.Tocame
This piece is just creepy, but it is also visually stimulating. It reminds me of watching macro time-lapse shots of mold or something decomposing. Doesn’t sound pretty? Watch It. It is probably one of my favorites on this list. It takes super close CG shots watching things decay, grow, infest, and all the while creating logos and type.

Softlightes – Heart Made of Sound
This is a pretty cool stop motion typographic piece. Unlike most of the others we have seen this one takes a turn into the manual approach to creating unique typographical elements. Talk about time consuming… but hey, it sure pays off when you see the finished piece

Typolution
This is a crazy work of art. A lot of the time when you think about typography you think about the way the letters and wording are laid out and intergrated with the piece. This video shows you how to use other characters such as commas, hyphens, and exclamation points, to create a whole world out of it.

TED 2009 Titles
Finally we wrap with this truly beautiful piece of 3D typography that is the opener for the 25th anniversary of one of the most inspiring conferences in the world: TED.
